Sumitomo receives FIRB nod for investment in Tivan's Speewah Fluorite Project
The Speewah Fluorite Project in Western Australia's Kimberley region aims to establish a new mining and processing operation.
In May 2025, Tivan disclosed binding agreements with Sumitomo and Japan Fluorite to form an incorporated JV for the Speewah Fluorite Project.
Japan Fluorite may invest up to A$60.3m ($39.2m) in three tranches for a 22.5% equity interest in the JV.
The initial investment of $5.3m (Y767.55m) from Japan Fluorite will secure a 7.5% equity interest and fund a feasibility study for the project.
This study will focus on mining and processing operations to produce acid-grade fluorspar, which is essential for semiconductor and electric vehicle battery manufacturing.
The investment was contingent upon several conditions including the FIRB approval, which has now been met.
Tivan executive chairman Grant Wilson said: 'We are very pleased that FIRB Approval has been provided for our joint venture with Sumitomo Corporation. At a complex moment for the global critical minerals sector, this timely approval reflects the abiding strength of the bilateral relationship between Australia and Japan.'
Additionally, Tivan is required to apply for the novation of a grant from the Australian Government's International Partnerships in Critical Minerals Programme and complete the project restructuring, which involves transferring project tenements to the JV company.
With FIRB approval secured and the application for grant novation under way, Tivan is finalising the project restructuring.
The formal establishment of the JV and the initial investment from Japan Fluorite Corporation are set to occur in the first half of July.
In December 2024, Tivan was awarded a A$7.4m cash grant from the Australian Government to support the Speewah Fluorite Project, part of a broader effort to bolster international supply chain partnerships for critical minerals.

Elliott Statement on Sumitomo Realty & Development Co., Ltd.
LONDON, Aug. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Elliott Investment Management, L.P. and Elliott Advisors (UK) Limited ("Elliott"), which advise funds that together have a more than 3% ownership stake in Sumitomo Realty & Development Co., Ltd. ("Sumitomo Realty" or the "Company"), making Elliott one of the Company's largest shareholders, note last week's announcement from the Company. We believe the Company's "Policy on Utilizing Fixed Assets and Leveraging Strategic Shareholdings" lacks both ambition and urgency. This policy falls short in achieving capital efficiency, enhancing shareholder returns and reducing cross shareholdings. As a result, the Company's valuation continues to suffer. The Company's asset sale target of ¥200 billion represents just a small fraction of Sumitomo Realty's total leasing portfolio and may not be completed until the 2030s. Similarly, the Company's 10-year timeframe to divest ¥400 billion of its portfolio of strategic shareholdings is far too long. Cross shareholdings remain an immediate concern and, in our view, are a key reason for the Company's low shareholder approval at this year's AGM. Sumitomo Realty must expand its ambitions and accelerate the implementation of its envisioned policy. This would unlock capital for higher-return growth projects and increased shareholder returns, helping to address the Company's persistent undervaluation. We will continue to work constructively with Sumitomo Realty's management team and engage with other shareholders to address these issues and raise the Company's corporate value. This story was originally published on Multifamily Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Multifamily Dive newsletter. Property: Potomac Shores multifamily development Developers: Hines, Sumitomo Forestry, Chuo-Nittochi Group Architect: Lessard Design Inc. Location: Dumfries, Virginia Units: 365 Cost: Withheld Houston-based developer Hines is joining forces with two Japanese real estate groups — Sumitomo Forestry and Chuo-Nittochi Group — to add a 365-unit apartment project to the Potomac Shores master-planned community south of Washington, D.C., in Dumfries, Virginia. The partnership recently closed on the development site, located one block from a future Virginia Railway Express train station, and expects to start construction in late July. The as-yet-unnamed project is set to be completed in 2027. The five-story wood-frame building will include a mix of studio and one-, two- and three-bedroom units, along with 31,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor community spaces. Amenities will include a coworking lounge, a children's play area, a pool and cabanas, a fitness center, a rooftop lounge and outdoor recreation areas. Bethesda, Maryland-based Coakley & Williams Construction is the project's general contractor. The 2,000-acre Potomac Shores community, developed by New York City-based Biddle Real Estate Ventures, is located along 2 miles of the Potomac River shoreline. The upcoming multifamily project will be the only one of its kind in Potomac Shores, joining single-family home developments by Ryan Homes and Stanley Martin Homes, both based in Reston, Virginia, and Fort Mitchell, Kentucky-based Drees Homes, according to the property website. 'This water- and transit-oriented multifamily development is uniquely positioned as the only rental community within an already established mixed-use master-planned community,' said Andrew McGeorge, senior managing director at Hines, in the release. 'With minimal multifamily construction expected in 2025, the market has a heightened demand for high-quality, newly constructed apartment homes like this one.' The Hines project will be located near the Potomac Shores town center, which includes over 3.7 million square feet of commercial and retail space. The property also encompasses 850 acres of open space, a trail network in progress, a newly renovated golf course and elementary, middle and high schools. The Potomac Shores rail station is expected to be completed in late 2026, providing access to Washington, D.C.; Quantico, Virginia; and Arlington, Virginia.
