Arab Cup Draw to be Held in Doha as Morocco Land in Top Pot

Morocco World07-05-2025

FIFA has announced that the draw for the 2025 Arab Cup and the U17 World Cup will take place in Doha on Saturday, 24 May.
The event will be held at a luxury hotel in the Qatari capital, coinciding with the final of the Emir Cup. Representatives from 16 Arab nations and all 48 countries qualified for the U17 World Cup will be in attendance. The ceremony will run from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Moroccan time.
The Arab Cup is scheduled from 1 to 18 December and will conclude on Qatar's National Day. The U-17 World Cup will be staged earlier, from 3 to 27 November.
Qatar is hosting the Arab Cup for the second consecutive time, following a successful edition in 2021, when Algeria beat Tunisia 2-0 in the final.
This year's competition sees increased prize money and is expected to draw large crowds. Iraq top the all-time winners list with four titles, ahead of Saudi Arabia (2), while Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco (2012) have one each.
Morocco have been drawn in Pot 1 alongside Egypt, Algeria and hosts Qatar. The Atlas Lions reached the semi-finals in 2021 before losing to Algeria on penalties.
Several Arab nations will also take part in the U17 World Cup, including Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and host nation Qatar. Germany are the defending champions after beating France on penalties back in 2023 when the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Tags: Arab CupMoroccoMorocco national teamu17 afconU17 MoroccoU17 world cup

Ziyech Leaves Al Duhail as Qatar Begin Foreign Player Overhaul

Hakim Ziyech has left Al Duhail after just five months, as clubs across the Qatar Stars League begin reshaping their squads following changes to foreign player regulations. The Moroccan international, who joined in January after a short-lived spell at Galatasaray, made 13 appearances for Al Duhail, scoring once and assisting another. His departure was confirmed by the club on Saturday in a short statement thanking him for his efforts. Ziyech is one of several big names to leave the Qatari league at the end of the 2024/25 season. Al Duhail have also announced the exits of head coach Christophe Galtier and striker Michael Olunga. Galtier departs after a season that ended without silverware, while Olunga leaves as the club's all-time top scorer with 123 goals. Elsewhere, Al Rayyan confirmed the departure of five foreign players, including Egypt's Mahmoud Trezeguet, who returns to Al Ahly. Brazilian trio Thiago Mendes, Romarinho and Paulo Vitor have also moved on, along with Paraguayan forward Adam Bareiro and Dutch right-back Joshua Brenet. The exits come as the Qatar Football Association prepares to implement a new rule allowing clubs to register up to 10 foreign players in their 28-man squads. The change is part of a wider effort to strengthen Qatari sides in Asian competitions, particularly as neighbouring Saudi clubs continue to attract top talent with heavy investment. Ziyech, now a free agent, will once again weigh up his options as he looks to revive a career that has seen stops in the Netherlands, England, Turkey and now Qatar. Regragui Rejects Sweden Friendly to Focus on AFCON Prep

Morocco head coach Walid Regragui has revealed that he turned down a proposed friendly against Sweden during the upcoming international break, insisting that preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil remains the priority. Speaking at a press conference ahead of Morocco's matches against Tunisia and Benin, Regragui confirmed the Swedish football federation had proposed a fixture to be held in Europe, but the offer was declined. 'We had an opportunity to face a European side. Sweden approached us but they wanted to host the match,' Regragui said. 'We're preparing for the AFCON at home. It's better to stick to the plan and play in our own conditions.' The Atlas Lions will instead remain in Morocco for both June fixtures, with Fes chosen as the host city, marking the national team's first appearance there in 16 years. 'Playing in Fes was my decision. The fans there haven't seen the national team in over a decade. It's time to give them that chance.' Upcoming Fixtures Morocco vs Tunisia – Friday, June 6 at 9 p.m. local time Morocco vs Benin – Monday, June 7 at 9.m. local time Both matches will take place at Stade de Fès as Morocco continues preparations for AFCON 2025.
