Trades, Brewing: De'Aaron Fox and a suddenly busy deadline
Yesterday's biggest sports news came out of Sacramento, where the Kings are finally open to trading star point guard De'Aaron Fox. It is seismic — he has been the main reason for the team's resurgence over the last three years — yet expected, as the Kings have faltered somewhat this season and Fox clearly wants out.
And thus, with all due respect to the long timeline of Jimmy Butler's efforts in Miami, we are now officially in the blitz of NBA trade deadline season. May glory await you on the other side.
One point on Fox before we start noodling:
Now we turn to Pulse friend and Bounce author Zach Harper for some fun. Rapid-fire trades start now:
Where do you think Fox lands — and when?
Zach: San Antonio with Victor Wembanyama, but I'm not convinced this happens before the trade deadline. There's plenty of time for the Kings to make the deal that benefits them the most. My guess: around draft night in June or the first week of free agency.
What's one trade you'd like to see happen?
Zach: I want to see Memphis just say, 'Bleep it,' and go for Jimmy Butler. Jimmy, Ja Morant, JJJ, Desmond Bane and a whole lot of grit still left to grind in Memphis. Butler might not want to go there, but Memphis could pull it off and make everybody a believer.
What's the funniest trade you can imagine happening before the deadline?
Zach: Kyle Kuzma goes back to the Lakers. Imagine the parable of the Prodigal Son returning, except he wears sweaters he'll eventually frame on his wall (yes, that's a thing), his hair is dyed like some bad Demolition cosplay and 'he's done fitting in' as he returns to LeBron's Lakers.
Subscribe to The Bounce for more, and also check out Sam Vecenie's list of trade ideas before you go.
Mercury acquire Thomas, Griner leaves
The WNBA chips are falling: The Phoenix Mercury are adding Connecticut Sun forward and perennial MVP candidate Alyssa Thomas in a sign-and-trade, a source confirmed to The Athletic, just two days after the blockbuster Jewell Loyd trade. Thomas has spent her entire 11-year career in Connecticut. She is a five-time All-Star and two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree. In other surprising news last night: Longtime Mercury star Brittney Griner agreed to join the Atlanta Dream, ending her 11-year run in Phoenix.
Eberflus lands in Dallas
The problem in Chicago was never defense under former head coach Matt Eberflus, who agreed to become the Cowboys' defensive coordinator yesterday. Eberflus inherits an extremely talented unit, and is a solid addition for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer. More details inside.
Iguodala quips on jersey retirement
The Warriors will retire Andre Iguodala's No. 9 jersey on Feb. 23, the team announced, the first of five numbers that should be retired by Golden State in the coming years. Iguodala's first reaction to beating Steph Curry and company to the honor: 'I'm just the oldest,' which is fair (he's 41). The retirement date is special too, as Golden State welcomes Dallas back to the Bay, which allows Klay Thompson to be present. I feel old, too, Andre.

Say What Now? Some eye-popping 2025 CFB predictions
We are in the liminal space of the NFL season, where more than a week remains before the Super Bowl and, in essence, nothing of note will happen between now and next week. Thus it is a perfect time to consider … next college football season.
Our writers got together to vote on every award and result under the sun here, but I'm laser-focusing on the section full of wild predictions. My three favorites, with a Pulse probability rating attached:
1. Iowa will elevate to a top-50 offense this year.
This comes via Kennington Smith, and I just cannot stand by it. They will likely improve with the addition of transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski, but the Hawkeyes ranked No. 117 in yards per game last year. It is bold, though.
Pulse probability: 4 percent
2. Multiple starting players leave their teams during the season over not receiving promised NIL/revenue-sharing money.
We're getting warmer here, and this take from Chris Vannini feels prescient. I wonder if NIL collectives have learned from the Matthew Sluka saga last year, or if we're all just doomed to repeat these cycles until more regulation comes forth. Probably the latter.
Pulse probability: 35 percent
3. After getting trounced by Notre Dame in South Bend, USC will fire Lincoln Riley.
Oh, this is the one. I read this, from Lindsay Schnell, and instantly felt truth in my bones. Riley is on the downslope at USC, a stunning notion considering the fanfare he brought with him from Oklahoma. The competition is harder now, too, and a blowout loss to the Fighting Irish on Oct. 18 could be a third straight loss on the schedule.
Pulse probability: 94 percent
Go read the rest of the prognostications, including one I personally believe to be 102 percent happening.
📺 Soccer: Sparta Prague at Bayern Leverkusen
3 p.m. ET on Paramount+
Today marks the final match day of the first-ever league stage of Champions League play, and the schedule is stacked. There are a dizzying number of possible outcomes for the final eight teams, as outlined here, but Leverkusen holds the key to many. If the reigning Bundesliga champs lose, there could be chaos.
📺 NHL: Flyers at Devils
7 p.m. ET on TNT/truTV/Max
This is a rematch of two nights ago, when Philadelphia notched a nice win against a better team. New Jersey remains a top contender, however, according to our metrics, whereas the Flyers are still 'growing.'

Kate Koval is a rising star in women's college basketball, playing at powerhouse Notre Dame. But she is also a native of war-torn Ukraine. Chantel Jennings penned a gripping story about Koval navigating both worlds. It's worth your time today. An accompanying podcast is also available on Apple and Spotify.
In Anaheim, there is a dichotomy among its sports teams, as Sam Blum writes today. The Ducks embrace their hometown. The Angels only have eyes for Los Angeles. Really interesting read.
Here's a fascinating story out of Spain, where talented 18-year-old center back Juma Bah paid his own €6 million release clause to break a La Liga contract and join Manchester City.
It's hard to imagine a better sell than this: Should soccer players be allowed to impersonate seagulls?
Ted Lasso existed before the show. And back when the character was just a commercial oddity, NBC gave away Ted Lasso trading cards. Now, those freebies are worth thousands.
Aryna Sabalenka is a tennis superstar, so why don't her endorsements and brand deals align with that? Charlie Eccleshare interrogated that here.

Kings, Knicks Predicted to Swap Stars in Blockbuster Offseason Trade

Kings, Knicks Predicted to Swap Stars in Blockbuster Offseason Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It was a disappointing season for the Sacramento Kings as they finished ninth in the Western Conference and failed to make the playoffs after losing to the Dallas Mavericks in the Play-In Tournament. Advertisement Now the Kings face some key decisions to begin the offseason regarding their roster as they try to rebound from a season full of change. Of course, Sacramento already made some major moves by hiring a new general manager and officially naming Doug Christie as their head coach. Now their attention shifts to their roster, primarily their star trio of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine. Sacramento Kings forward Domantas Sabonis (11) and guard Malik Monk (0) walk up the court against the Minnesota Timberwolves© Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images There is belief around the NBA that they will move at least one of these players to try and retool their roster. With this in mind, Sports Illustrated's Will Zimmerle recently proposed a mock trade that would see the Kings and New York Knicks swap their star centers. Advertisement In the trade, Zimmerle has Sacramento sending Sabonis, Devin Carter and a the Minnesota Timberwolves 2031 first-round pick to New York in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. This would be an interesting move for both teams, especially the Kings as they would send away one of their star players and potentially their point guard of the future to add Towns. New York Knicks star Karl-Anthony TownsTrevor Ruszkowski-Imagn Images Of course, Towns is a great offensive center and he is also a great defender, but he struggles on the defensive end, which was seen during New York's playoff run. Because of this, Sacramento may be better off just keeping Sabonis who is an elite rebounder and has also been a great scorer for them during his time with the franchise. Advertisement The Kings would also have to give up Carter who showed flashes during his rookie season of eventually becoming Sacramento's new point guard after they traded De'Aaron Fox at the trade deadline. Manchester United fans' survey results: Concerns about INEOS but players to blame for terrible season

We asked, and you answered. The Athletic would like to thank all of its subscribers who took part in our Manchester United end-of-season survey. Thousands of you contributed, creating an interesting temperature check on one of the world's most significant — and newsworthy — football clubs. After United's worst season of the Premier League era, we wanted to know how fans are feeling about life in and around Old Trafford. Here are the results… Talk of the Devils listeners may be familiar with 'The Andy Mitten Standard of Quality', whereby a good United season requires a top-four league finish and a piece of silverware. Erik ten Hag was the last manager to achieve the seal of approval, finishing third in the 2022-23 season and winning the League Cup. Advertisement The majority of United subscribers believe the minimum for a successful 2025-26 would be Ruben Amorim's team qualifying for the Europa League — a position best secured with a sixth-place league finish, but which can be achieved through winning a domestic trophy. Thirty-six per cent of survey takers would like Amorim's men to do one better, saying that Champions League qualification counts as the minimum level of success. United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, 24 points off Newcastle United in fifth, the lowest Champions League spot. Amorim will be heartened to learn that The Athletic subscribers believe he might one day bring the Premier League title back to Old Trafford. Thirty-eight per cent of survey entrants have faith that the head coach may one day deliver the club's 21st title, while nearly 31.6 per cent believe him capable of turning the team into Champions League competitors. And 11.5 per cent of you believe Amorim's talent ceiling stops at Europa League competition, while 11.1 per cent of subscribers believe he might one day win a cup competition. 'Six months ago, after my first three games in charge with two victories and one draw, I said to you: 'The storm is coming'. Today, after this disastrous season, I want to tell you the good days are coming,' said Amorim following the final Premier League game of 2024-25. 'If there is one club in the world that has proven in the past that it can overcome any situation, any disaster, it is our club… It is Manchester United Football Club.' Apologies to Tyrell Malacia, who enjoyed a successful six-month loan at Dutch side PSV, but The Athletic wanted to know if United fans saw a future in three of their headline loanees from 2024-25. The answer was a resounding no: 64 per cent of respondents would prefer it if Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony pursued futures away from Old Trafford. Rashford is pursuing a move to Barcelona this summer. Following some impressive performances for Real Betis, Antony prefers to continue his career in La Liga. Only three per cent of respondents wanted Sancho to continue his United career. The 25-year-old will be returning to the club — however briefly — after an agreement could not be reached over personal terms with Chelsea to make his loan move permanent. The most straightforward question of our survey got our most straightforward answer: Bruno Fernandes was voted as United's most important player in our survey. The 30-year-old was awarded a litany of individual accolades for his performances this season. Fernandes won four consecutive Player of the Month awards between February and May in 2024-25 for United. He also won United's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year (an award voted by those within the dressing room) prizes. This week, the captain explained he was happy to stay at Old Trafford, despite a lucrative offer to leave from Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. Fernandes is the rare, consistent shining light at United. Amorim and others will look to build around him in the summer. Outgoings will be a major point of conversation for the club this summer, and 38.5 per cent of survey respondents said they were most comfortable selling Rashford. Rasmus Hojlund endured a difficult second season at Old Trafford, leading to 21.4 per cent of subscribers being open to the striker being sold. Advertisement Amorim informed his players that he intends to remain at the club for next season following defeat in the Europa League final. He also told Alejandro Garnacho to find a new club in front of those assembled — 18.1 per cent of respondents would be open to selling the 20-year-old. Rashford and Garnacho's status as academy graduates means their potential sales would be registered as 'pure profit' in club accounts. There is more to United than on-field performance, and that was made clear by our survey. INEOS's 18 months in charge of footballing operations have seen several concerns raised about the club via fan protests and other means. In our survey, 45 per cent of respondents were concerned about the redundancies made under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his leadership group. United confirmed in February that they were set to make 150 to 200 redundancies as part of wider cost-cutting measures, following the 250 layoffs made the previous summer. It is understood that 450 members of staff have left since Ratcliffe completed his minority purchase in February 2024. Just over 19 per cent of participants expressed discomfort over INEOS's decision-making over head coaches: £21million ($28.4m) has been spent on renewing and dismissing Ten Hag, before hiring Amorim. Just over 15 per cent of you are concerned by INEOS's dealings in the transfer market. This summer will represent another opportunity for player trading, this time with Jason Wilcox operating as the club's director of football. And 14.8 per cent of you expressed 'Other' as your leading concern under INEOS. Please inform and elaborate on that topic through the comment section below, especially if the topic is ticket prices. There were split opinions over INEOS's running of the club within our survey, but the majority of answers voiced displeasure at INEOS's handling of Manchester United: 18.2 per cent of correspondents believe the minority investors to be performing at a five out of 10 level. A combined 62.9 per cent of respondents graded Ratcliffe and his executive group at a four out of 10 level or below. Advertisement A disappointing league campaign, defeat in the Europa League final will have played a role in INEOS's changed perspective in the public eye. Frustration over rising ticket prices, and the reception to the proposed new 100,000-seater stadium illustrate the difficult needle Ratcliffe and others are trying to thread. The Athletic's 2024-25 season review gave Amorim a three out of 10 grade for his 42 matches in charge. Our survey was a bit more charitable. Just over 24 per cent of respondents have the head coach a five out of 10 rating for his work from November to May. He strikes a confident and charismatic tone in press conferences and one-on-one interviews, but his adherence to a bespoke 3-4-3 tactical shape has caused frustration within some sections of the fanbase. Despite the low scoring, United fans would ideally like to give Amorim time to reshape the squad to his liking, rather than call for his immediate dismissal. Amorim himself will hope for a positive summer and start to 2025-26 to win any naysayers back onside. Nearly 50 per cent of subscribers believed the biggest issue affecting United came from player performance. One can look into how the current squad came to be and whether they are playing a style of football best suited for them. One can also look at the Premier League table and come to the much shorter conclusion that the team underperformed. Something that is reiterated by our final question. Close to 90 per cent of respondents believed the side performed 'way below expectations', with only 1.6 per cent believing United performed as expected. 'The reflection of the coach is the league,' said Amorim to TNT Sports following United's Europa League comeback victory over Lyon at Old Trafford. 'You can be good in European games, but your reflection as a team is the league. We are underperforming, but then you have to see the context. You can see that we lack a lot of characteristics in our team.' Advertisement Everyone involved in Manchester United will have to work hard to address the missing characteristics. One survey cannot encapsulate the totality of a club as huge as United, but the overall message from our respondents is clear: things need to improve. And quickly.

The wait is over. Now does signing Aaron Rodgers make the Pittsburgh Steelers contenders in the AFC North?

The wait is over. Now does signing Aaron Rodgers make the Pittsburgh Steelers contenders in the AFC North? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Future Hall of Famer and free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers has put an end to this offseason's most grueling waiting game by confirming that he plans to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport report that Rodgers will sign a one-year contract that an NFL source has suggested to us might be valued in the $30 million range. He is expected fly to Pittsburgh soon and participate in the upcoming mandatory minicamp next week. The Steelers front office now sees their patience and optimism pay off as they completely built their NFL Draft plan based on the assumption that Rodgers would sign and allow them to target other needs outside of a quarterback ... although they only had Mason Rudolph on contract. Pittsburgh would ultimately draft Will Howard as well, but they now fall down the depth chart to back up the four-time MVP. Rodgers enters the AFC North with the opportunity to draw the Steelers closer to contention with the Baltimore Ravens for the division crown. Last season, the Steelers finished second with a 10-7 record - two games behind the division champion Ravens. The 41-year-old is coming off a lousy 2024 campaign with the New York Jets, but with a better supporting cast and new environment to ease his mental state (as best it can), hopefully Rodgers' play will see a bit of resurgence. Advertisement He joins forces with star receiver DK Metcalf and tight end Pat Freiermuth as solid receiving targets along with an eclectic group of pass catchers in Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods to work with. Rookie running back Kaleb Johnson may start after Najee Harris left in free agency, so the pass game quickly turns into the Steelers expected identity rather than the run with an inexperienced ball carrier. Pittsburgh likely still prefers their chances this season with Rodgers much more than last year's cycle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields under center, despite the team's moderate success. The end-of-season collapse, however, was especially disappointing. Rodgers' veteran experience could alleviate any of that worry this year. Advertisement The Steelers finished with a 3-3 record in the division during the regular season - beating and losing to each team once. In the Wild Card round of the playoffs, their season came to an end against Baltimore, losing 28-14. The Ravens enter 2025 just as much of a threat as in years past and will remain the Steelers toughest competition in the division. Their Week 11 meeting, an 18-16 Pittsburgh win, was thanks to the heroics of kicker Chris Boswell who accounted for all of the scoring on six field goals. More offensive firepower with Rodgers at the helm should help eliminate low-scoring affairs like this one and many of the Steelers' losses. Having big showings against the division will be extra crucial in revamping this offense's reputation. The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to return many of their offensive weapons as well, with the trio of Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins all on new contracts. Their defense, however, offered little to worry about outside of pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is angrily waiting on a deal of his own. If Cincy has any hopes of rebounding from their 9-8 season, Hendrickson is a huge part of that. Advertisement Pittsburgh put on a clinic in their first meeting with Cincinnati, but as the story of the season was, the consistency pendulum swung the opposite way the second time around. The Cleveland Browns are again expected to be the bottom dwellers in the AFC North, as they have an even more controversial quarterback situation than Pittsburgh this offseason. Last season faired decently well for the Steelers, but the addition of Rodgers and Metcalf provide a major shake-up to the offense that head coach Mike Tomlin should be more confident in this season against the AFC North. Is it enough to win the division? May be too early to tell. Advertisement But it's certainly a step in the right direction. Finally.
