The M3 MacBook Air is gone for good — but the M2 is a survivor worth considering
With the introduction of the new M4 MacBook Air, it's time to say goodbye to some of the older models. This time, both the M3 and the M2 MacBook Air will disappear from Apple Store shelves. Unlike the M3, however, the M2 isn't being discontinued completely — it will still be available at certain retailers.
This gives people a chance to get an amazing laptop (the laptop I'm writing on right now) at a really good price. TechRadar has already spotted certain M2 MacBook Air configurations on Amazon selling for as low as $699. That's 30% off MSRP and 30% less than the new M4 model.
If you're unsure which model is best for you — I can vouch for the M2. If you're a typical laptop user like myself who doesn't do much more than browsing, word processing, video streaming, and some light programming, the M2 provides great performance and battery life.
If you're not on a tight budget, the M4 will stay performant for longer and the new lower price is a great deal in my opinion — but there's no need to stretch your budget to accommodate the M4 if you'd prefer not to.
As for the M3 MacBook Air's untimely disappearance — this could be down to the general problems Apple encountered with this chip. From a user's perspective, it performs well and there are no problems with the devices it powers, but industry experts believe that Apple had trouble with the first-generation 3nm technology the M3 uses. The company moved onto the M4 and second-generation 3nm tech quickly and could want to stop producing base M3 chips sooner rather than later.

How to Add These Hidden Music and Apple Intelligence Controls to Your iPhone
Apple released iOS 18.4 on March 31, and the update brought bug fixes, new emoji and a new recipes section in Apple News to all iPhones. The update also brought a handful of new controls to the iPhone Control Center, including one that brings Visual Intelligence to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. When Apple released iOS 18 in September, the update remodeled the Control Center to give you more control over how the feature functions. With iOS 18, you can resize controls, assign some controls to their own dedicated page and adjust the placement of controls to your liking. Apple also introduced more controls to the feature, making it a central hub for all your most-used iPhone features. If you have the update on your iPhone, you can add ambient music controls, and Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones get a few AI controls in the menu, too. Here's what you need to know about the new controls and how to add them to your Control Center. Ambient Music controls Apple gave everyone four new controls in the Control Center library under the Ambient Music category. These controls are Sleep, Chill, Productivity and Wellbeing. Each of these controls can activate a playlist filled with music that corresponds to the specific control. Sleep, for instance, plays ambient music to help lull you to bed. Some studies suggest white noise could help adults learn words and improve learning in environments full of distractions. According to the mental health company Calm, certain kinds of music can help you fall asleep faster and improve the quality of your sleep. So these new controls can help you learn, fall asleep and more. Here's how to find these controls. 1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your Home Screen to open your Control Center. 2. Tap the plus (+) sign in the top-left corner of your screen. 3. Tap Add a Control. You'll see a section of controls called Ambient Music. You can also search for "Ambient Music" in the search bar at the top of the control library. Under Ambient Music, you'll see all four controls. Tap one (or all) of them to add them to your Control Center. Once you've added one or all the controls to your Control Center, go back to your Control Center and tap one to start playing music. The new Ambient Music controls in Control Center play preloaded playlists on your iPhone when activated. Apple/CNET Here's how to change the playlist for each control. 1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your Home Screen to open your Control Center. 2. Tap the plus (+) sign in the top-left corner of your screen. 3. Tap the Ambient Music control you want to edit. 4. Tap the playlist to the right of Playlist. A dropdown menu will appear with additional playlists for each control. If you're in the Sleep control, you'll see playlists like Restful Notes and Lo-Fi Snooze. If you have playlists in your Music app, then you'll also see an option From Library, which pulls music from your library. Tap whichever playlist you want and it will be assigned to that control. Ambient Music is similar to Background Sounds, but those are more static sounds, like white noise. But Ambient Music is actual music as opposed to more static sounds like in that feature. Both of these features feel like a way for Apple to present itself as the first option for whenever you want some background music to help you fall asleep or be productive. Other services, like Spotify and YouTube, already have ambient music playlists like these, so this could be Apple's way of taking some of those service's audience. Apple Intelligence controls Only people with an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or the iPhone 16 lineup can access Apple Intelligence features for now, and those people got three new dedicated Apple Intelligence controls with iOS 18.4. Those controls are Talk to Siri, Type to Siri and Visual Intelligence. Here's how to find these controls. 1. Swipe down from the top-right corner of your Home Screen to open your Control Center. 2. Tap the plus (+) sign in the top-left corner of your screen. 3. Tap Add a Control. Then you can use the search bar near the top of the screen to search for "Apple Intelligence" or you can scroll through the menu to find the Apple Intelligence & Siri section. Tap any (or all) of these controls to add them to your Control Center. While Talk to Siri and Type to Siri controls can be helpful if you have trouble accessing the digital assistant, the Visual Intelligence control is important because it brings the Apple Intelligence feature to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Apple/CNET Visual Intelligence was originally only accessible on the iPhone 16 lineup because those devices have the Camera Control button. With iOS 18.4, Visual Intelligence is now accessible on more devices and people thanks to the titular control in Control Center. Apple's big summer event is tomorrow. WWDC 2025 is a 'critical opportunity' for the iPhone maker.
Apple is limping into its big summer event this year. The iPhone giant is setting the stage for its Worldwide Developers Conference — its annual software-focused event that Apple fanatics and investors alike look forward to. On Monday, developers will descend on Apple's campus in Cupertino, California, where CEO Tim Cook and other executives are set to debut their famous keynote. The event has become known for exciting product reveals, such as the Apple Vision Pro headset and a sneak peek at the latest version of its iPhone operating system, iOS. This year, however, Apple will have three elephants in the room on its big day: biting China tariffs, an already-behind-schedule Apple Intelligence, and questions around the company's long-term vision for its hardware. Forrester analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee doesn't expect much fireworks. "The WWDC announcements will be relatively incremental and muted, perhaps except for a likely visual design overhaul of the user experience," Chatterjee told Business Insider. In 2024, Cook and Co. introduced the world to Apple Intelligence, Apple's play on artificial intelligence. It built an iPhone around the AI. Nearly a year later, Apple Intelligence hasn't lived up to analysts' expectations for driving more iPhone upgrades. Apple delayed its promise of a more personalized Siri, which was showcased at WWDC 2024. In April, the company told the unaffiliated Apple blog Daring Fireball that it would take "longer than we thought" to be ready for release. Monday is a "critical opportunity" for Apple to address key questions about its AI, such as where its roadmap for Apple Intelligence is headed, said Gadjo Sevilla, analyst at EMARKETER, a sister company to BI. "The company's AI transition has been fraught with delays and the company's inability to showcase its own AI capabilities," Sevilla said. Apple's terrible, horrible, no good start to 2025 Apple hasn't had the easiest start to 2025. The company has been raked by legal battles involving its app store, unpredictable tariff announcements that caused a supply-chain scramble, and ongoing challenges in China, a key region for iPhone sales and manufacturing. During Apple's earnings call in early May, Cook told investors to expect $900 million in tariff costs in the June quarter. Then, on May 23, President Donald Trump said iPhones produced outside the US would face a tariff of at least 25%. Analysts previously said shifting iPhone production away from countries like India and China to the US could take up to 10 years and cause iPhone prices to skyrocket. Chatterjee said these tariff changes could have "grave consequences" for the company. Apple also suffered a major setback last month in its yearslong court battle with Epic Games. A judge ruled that it will no longer be able to collect a 27% fee from US developers who direct users to make purchases externally. As a developer-focused event, WWDC could be an opportunity for Apple to smooth things over with app builders. "This is Apple's chance to mend ties with developers frustrated by its restrictive ecosystem and high fees," Sevilla said. Apple didn't respond to a request for comment by Business Insider. Meanwhile, OpenAI, which partnered with Apple last year to bring ChatGPT to Siri, recently tapped Apple's former design lead Jony Ive to work on wearable AI hardware. Ive famously worked closely with the late Apple cofounder, Steve Jobs, to design some of the company's most iconic gadgets before leaving the company in 2019. Apple was notably late to the AI game. The recent OpenAI hire has analysts concerned that Apple's position as a frontrunner in innovation is slipping. "This raises expectations for Apple to counter with its own AI innovations — especially since the narrative of the 'next big thing' happening outside Apple, led by its former star designer, is one the company will likely want to dispel," Sevilla said. Apple has a key advantage in the AI race, however — a massive, global distribution channel for its software. After all, the iPhone is the most popular smartphone in the world. The tech world will be watching to see if Apple makes moves at WWDC to course-correct after its stumbles in AI over the last year. What To Expect in Markets This Week: May Inflation Data, Apple Conference, GameStop Earnings
News from a tech giant, inflation data and earnings from a meme-stock legend are among the highlights of the week ahead in markets. Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference opens the week with a keynote session from CEO Tim Cook scheduled for Monday. Cook will likely use the event to address the company's new products, services, and partnerships. GameStop could clarify its cryptocurrency strategy on the company's earnings call, set for Tuesday. Key companies in the growing artificial intelligence (AI) market are also scheduled to update investors on their financials during the week. A U.S. inflation report scheduled for Wednesday could indicate whether President Donald Trump's tariffs are beginning to have an effect on the economy. The news follows a healthy jobs report Friday. After markets shook off trade tensions last week to bring the S&P 500 back above 6000, investors will keep an eye on tariffs as Trump's deadline on trade deals approaches. At the same time, the Senate will continue to work toward passage of Trump's 'Big, Beautiful' budget bill amid increasing criticism from Tesla CEO and former Department of Government Efficiency Chief Elon Musk. Read to the bottom for our calendar of key events—and one more thing. Wednesday's expected release of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) will be the first look at inflation from May. With a Federal Reserve meeting around the corner, the report could set the tone for the central bank as it faces pressure from Trump to lower interest rates. Fed officials are in their blackout period ahead of their next two-day meeting, which begins June 17. Trump's tariffs will be a key topic in Friday's consumer sentiment report, which dropped for four straight months before leveling out in May. Consumers are consistently worried that tariffs will drive inflation higher, sending the closely watched survey to some of its lowest readings since the pandemic. As inflation has lately appeared in check, the freefall in sentiment may have hit bottom. GameStop's (GME) earnings report comes as the video-game retailer dips its toe in the cryptocurrency pool. The company, which fired up the meme stock craze in 2021 with its meteoric rise, announced in late May that it bought $500 million in bitcoin. With its retail video game business in decline, GameStop looks to emulate the playbook of Michael Saylor's Strategy (MSTR) and other companies centering their business models on buying bitcoin. AI will be a key theme in other corporate earnings this week. Oracle's (ORCL) report on Wednesday follows the January announcement that the database software firm would join ChatGPT maker OpenAI and SoftBank as part of a joint venture known as Stargate to build AI infrastructure. Adobe's (ADBE) report on Thursday is also expected to focus on the company's sales of AI-enhanced graphics software.
