Rupal stuns Vithya; Dev Meena sets National Pole vault record
Vithya, Aldrin upset; Meena tops own mark
Kochi: Two stunning upsets and a national record-breaking performance summed up the action on Day 2 of the 28th
National Federation Senior Athletics Competition
here at the Maharaja's College Stadium on Tuesday.
In the women's 400m, hot favourite
Vithya Ramraj
of Tamil Nadu was beaten by Uttar Pradesh's
Rupal
, while national record holder in
long jump
,
Jeswin Aldrin
, continued his poor form and settled for a silver behind David P of Tamil Nadu.

Towards the end of the day,
Dev Meena
of Madhya Pradesh bettered his own national and meet record in the men's pole vault with an effort of 5.35m. However, Meena decided not to attempt the Asian meet qualification mark of 5.51m due to low light and slight drizzle.
It all looked good for Vithya at the start as she was leading the first 300m of the 400m race. However, a desperate surge from Rupal (52.55s) saw her pushing Vithya (52.81s) back to the second spot in the final 70m and grab gold. Kerala's Sneha K earned bronze, finishing in 53 seconds.
The event also saw six athletes, including Kerala's Jisna Mathew, Tamil Nadu's Subha Venkatesan, and Gujarat's Devyaniba Mahendras, attain
Asian Championship qualification
marks. 'I was a bit nervous at the start and because of that, I was a bit slow in the beginning of the race.
Yet, I was able to beat Vithya. She pushed me hard and gave me a good fight,' said Rupal. Relatively unknown David P of Tamil Nadu sprang a surprise in the jumping pit by leaping to 7.94m to stun Aldrin. Aldrin, who opted out of his last three jumps, could only manage 7.83m.
Aldrin's training partner and local boy Muhammed Anees Yahiya (7.70m) came third. Aldrin, who was pushed back to seventh place in the Indian Open last week after suffering a hamstring injury during the competition, said he was yet to recover from the injury and decided to compete in Kochi only because of the selection for the Asian Championships.
However, none among the competitors in long jump managed to achieve the Asian Championships qualification standard. The winner, David, himself was disappointed with the distance he achieved.

French Open 2025: Lorenzo Musetti limps off, Carlos Alcaraz in final
Spain's Carlos Alcaraz, right, and Italy's Lorenzo Musetti greet each other. (AP Photo) The Times of India at Roland Garros: For an hour and 40 minutes, Lorenzo Musetti forced the extra ball on the defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, who was stretched, running and sliding, playing one more ball every time under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier. The Spaniard, whose adventurous brand of tennis has made him a crowd favourite everywhere he plays, was locked out of the 49-minute opening set by the world No. 7, whose elegant, single-handed backhand is a 'wow' factor on a whole different level. Each time the explosive Alcaraz broke in the second set, the Italian bounced right back, until he couldn't. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The 23-year-old limped out of the men's singles semifinals of the French Open on Friday. The 22-year-old Spaniard, seeded second, led 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-0, 2-0 when the Italian pulled up short after two hours and 25 minutes of play, struggling with pain on his left leg. Musetti, who won a total of five points in the 23-minute third set, four of them on serve, was clearly struggling. At 0-5 in the third set, he called for the physio, and when he pulled off his headband after the second game of the fourth set, it was curtains. Musetti, who will undergo tests on Saturday, said, 'Really sad and disappointed at how it ended. At the beginning of the third set, when I was serving, I started to lose a little bit of strength on the left leg (behind), and it was getting worse and worse, so I decided to stop. 'In the beginning of the fourth set, I couldn't go for rallies, I could not move like I was doing earlier in the match,' he said. 'There was too much risk to go forward and to be able to show something even for the crowd.' Musetti enjoyed a brilliant run on clay this year, reaching the semi-finals of all Masters 1000 events on clay and Roland Garros in the same season. 'We both started really well, I had to play my best level of the tournament to stay there with him,' Musetti said. 'I felt I stepped forward on my level today, felt closer to his level. I maintained the high level that we showed for twohours. So really happy about that, it's a step forward, because the last two matches (against Alcaraz) were a little bit oneway. I felt that today I had my chances to even go two sets up, but of course Carlos, he's playing really well. He deserves to go to the final.' Virat Kohli's love for 'dhaba' food, priority for family & more | RCB bus driver shares stories Musetti, who won more points in the first set 33 to 28, slipped behind in the second 39 to 44. The Spaniard had 32 unforced errors and 34 winners, 20 from the forehand side. 'It's never great getting through or winning a match like this,' said Alcaraz. 'Lorenzo is a great player. He has had an incredible clay season. I always wish him all the best, a quick recovery, and hopefully we are going to enjoy his tennis pretty soon. 'The first two sets were really tough,' said Alcaraz. 'I had chances to break his serve, I couldn't make the most of them. When I won the second set, there was a little bit of relief, and then in the third set I knew what I had to do at the beginning: just push him to the limit and try to be aggressive, not let him dominate the game more. I was calmer.'

1st T20I: Jos Buttler's blistering 96 and Liam Dawson's comeback shine against West Indies; England win by 21 runs
Jos Buttler made a stunning return to T20 cricket on Friday, smashing a commanding 96 off just 59 balls to guide England to a 21-run victory over the West Indies in the first of a three-match series at Chester-le-Street. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In his first T20 appearance since relinquishing the captaincy, Buttler delivered a masterclass in white-ball batting, showcasing reverse sweeps, ramps, and classical strokes in a knock that included six fours and four sixes. He narrowly missed out on a century, falling lbw to Alzarri Joseph, whose four overs went for 51 runs. England posted a competitive 188/6, setting the tone for a high-stakes contest. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Liam Dawson, playing his first T20 international in nearly three years, made an instant impact with career-best figures of 4-20. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner dismantled the West Indies middle order, dismissing Johnson Charles, Sherfane Rutherford, Roston Chase, and Rovman Powell as the visitors stumbled to 167/9. 'He bowled beautifully,' said England captain Harry Brook. 'He's got so many skills.' Brook's strategy of deploying 12 overs of spin, with contributions from Adil Rashid and Jacob Bethell, was deliberate preparation for next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. 'We're not completely set on this structure for the team but it's worth a go, and it worked this time,' he added. The West Indies were left ruing the absence of Akeal Hosein, their premier left-arm spinner, who is yet to join the squad due to delays in UK visa processing. 'He was missed, he's one of our frontline players,' said veteran all-rounder Jason Holder. 'But we had a team good enough to beat England — we just fell a little short, particularly with the bat.' The series continues on Sunday in Bristol, with England leading 1-0. Gautam Gambhir sends stern message after Bengaluru tragedy Brief scores England: 188/6 in 20 overs (J Buttler 96; R Shepherd 2-33) West Indies: 167/9 in 20 overs (L Dawson 4-20)
