After achieving the mark in his third attempt, the 23-year-old athlete of JSW opted out of the remaining jumps. Two Keralites, Abdulla Aboobacker representing Air Force and Mohammed Muhassin (JSW), finished second and third with 16.99m and 16.28m, respectively. Later, Shaili Singh made a remarkable comeback from injury, leaping 6.64m to clear the qualification mark for the Asian meet. In the process, she also broke the 23-year-old meet record of her mentor Anju Bobby George, which was 6.59m set in Chennai. Reliance athletes Ancy Sojan (6.46m) and Moumita Mondal (6.45m) came second and third, respectively. All three achieved the Asian meet qualification marks. Reliance Foundation supported athletes put up a strong show at the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition in Kochi from April 21-24 by winning a total of 27 medals including 7 Golds, 11 Silvers and 9 Bronze medals. A total of 14 athletes from Reliance Foundation are now in contention to represent India at the Asian Championships next month after meeting the qualification standard in their events. The Asian Championships are scheduled to be held in Gumi, South Korea from May 27-31. As many as 10 athletes registered new Personal Bests at the meet in addition to three meet records and Animesh Kujur setting a new national record in the 200m by clocking a time of 20.40s in the final, beating the previous national record which stood in the name of his fellow RF athlete Amlan Borgohain. Amlan won silver on Thursday in a time of 20.80s. The new meet records were set by Twinkle Chaudhary (Women's 800m), Sawan Barwal (Men's 10,000m) and Manikanta Hoblidhar (Men's 100m), with all three of them making a claim on a berth at the Asian Championships. Speaking after his national record, Animesh said, 'I had a feeling that I would get a good time after the race earlier in the day. My focus is on the World Championships. I felt like I got a really good push today, especially around the 100m mark. I want to thank my coach, Odisha government and my whole team at Reliance Foundation for always supporting me." RF athletes had a terrific final day, winning 11 medals to record their best ever tally at the competition. Lauding the display of the athletes as well as the support staff, James Hillier, Athletics Director, Reliance Foundation, said, 'Our athletes were really dominant in the sprints, jumps, endurance and the throws events. This is the first competition where we have had our athletes win multiple medals in all these four event areas, so I'm very pleased with our display, which is our best ever at this competition. A total of 14 of our athletes have breached the qualification marks for the Asian Championships, which is an impressive number. A lot of our athletes, including Jyothi, Tejas and Jeswin had niggles and injuries, but all three of them managed to medal. A lot of credit goes to our 22 member support staff, including the assistant coaches, physios, performance managers and strength and conditioning coaches, who are here for helping the athletes get on the track and recover optimally. It took a very strong, collaborative effort to get this result." A total of five athletes won multiple medals: Sawan Barwal, Animesh Kujur, Kiran Matre, Moumita Mondal and Seema. Vithya Ramraj dominates 400m hurdles, clocks second-fastest time in Asia this year

Kochi: and legendary athlete have one thing in common. The two hold the women's 400m hurdles record with a time of 55.42 seconds. On Wednesday at the Maharaja's College Stadium here in K o c h i , Vithya couldn't come anywhere close to that record but dominated the event from start to finish. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now She clocked 56.04 seconds to smash the meet record and grabbed the women's 400m hurdles gold on Day 3 of the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition . She erased the mark set by Saritaben Gayakwad (57.21s) in the Patiala meet six years ago. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The victory also offered Vithya some consolation after being pushed to second place in the women's 400 by Uttar Pradesh's Rupa on Tuesday. Kerala's Anu R finished second with a time of 58.26 seconds, while Aswini R (1.02.41) of Tamil Nadu bagged the bronze. However, Vithya rued the lack of competition in the event. 'It was a good track and good conditions, but I didn't feel challenged. 'After a point, all my rivals were far behind, and I felt as if I was competing with myself. I could have improved the timing a bit more if there was better competition,' she said. Vithya's effort in Kochi is the second-fastest time in Asia this year, and if she can do an encore at the Asian Championship in South Korea next month, she can expect a podium finish. However, more than securing a medal at the Asian event, Vithya's primary target is to achieve a personal best, which would see her erasing Usha's 40-year-old record.

Vithya breaks meet record, Niharika shines in national athletics meet

KOCHI: The third day of the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition was more sedate than the first two where national and meet records were set. On Wednesday there was just one record in seven finals. Quartermile champion R Vithya Ramraj of Tamil Nadu touched the finish line in 400m hurdles way before her opponents in a meet record time of 56.04s. This is also her personal best. National camper Vithya also attained the qualification mark for Asian Athletic championship to be held in Gwen, South Korea, next month. She bettered the meet record of 57.21s set by Sarita Ben Gaykwad in Patiala in 2019. Kerala's Anu R, who had a patchy start, could not pull off a competitive performance and finished second with a timing of 58.26s. "My mindset have become stronger than before and that is the improvement that I have managed. Initially I only wanted to push in the first 100m, then got carried away by it until the end,' said Vithya on her impressive performance. Women's triple jump was an intense competition between National Games gold medalist Niharika Vashisht of Punjab and JSW's Kerala athlete Sandra Babu. Sandra, who jumped 13.42m only in her second attempt, was leading until almost the end and even improved her distance to 13.48m in her fifth attempt. But Niharika, who trailed Sandra in the five jumps, landed a 13.48m in her sixth attempt, an effort that propelled her to the title. Niharika had been constantly improving her personal best in every competition since her National Games win in February. 'Even though my technique and jump were always good, my run up was a weak point. I used to lose a lot of speed during the start but am improving on that with the help of a sprint coach,' said Niharika after her narrow win. At the same time Sandra is just happy as she achieved a bonus silver, while her main focus lies on Thursday's long jump event. 'The coach had asked me to only take three attempts and not exert myself too much as my main event is long jump. I could not afford an injury before that. Therefore I am really happy with what I could achieve,' said Sandra, who will hit the track again on Thursday. Kerala's Sheena K V won the bronze in the event. Meanwhile, Yashas P of Karnataka, who bagged gold in 400m hurdles, was disappointed that he couldn't cut the Asian qualification mark. 'There was no competition at all, that's why I missed the mark,' he said as he finished at 49.32s while the qualification time was 49.19s. Silver medalist Subhas Das, representing JSW, only finished at 50.11s. In other finals, Damneet Singh representing Reliance Sports won gold in men's hammer throw (63.30m). In men's 3000m steeplechase Sunil Joliya Jinabhai of Gujarat won by finishing at 8:43:82s. In women's 3000m steeplechase, Manju Ajay Yadav of Madhya Pradesh finished the first at 10:34:08s and Vidhi of Uttar Pradesh bagged the gold in women's shot put. The event at Maharajas College Stadium in Kochi ends on Thursday with 13 finals. The highlights would be 200m men and women sprints, 800m men and women, triple jump men and long jump women where top athletes like Olympian Praveen Chitravel and long jumper Shaili Singh will be competing. Rupal stuns Vithya; Dev Meena sets National Pole vault record

Vithya, Aldrin upset; Meena tops own mark Kochi: Two stunning upsets and a national record-breaking performance summed up the action on Day 2 of the 28th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition here at the Maharaja's College Stadium on Tuesday. In the women's 400m, hot favourite Vithya Ramraj of Tamil Nadu was beaten by Uttar Pradesh's Rupal , while national record holder in long jump , Jeswin Aldrin , continued his poor form and settled for a silver behind David P of Tamil Nadu. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Towards the end of the day, Dev Meena of Madhya Pradesh bettered his own national and meet record in the men's pole vault with an effort of 5.35m. However, Meena decided not to attempt the Asian meet qualification mark of 5.51m due to low light and slight drizzle. It all looked good for Vithya at the start as she was leading the first 300m of the 400m race. However, a desperate surge from Rupal (52.55s) saw her pushing Vithya (52.81s) back to the second spot in the final 70m and grab gold. Kerala's Sneha K earned bronze, finishing in 53 seconds. The event also saw six athletes, including Kerala's Jisna Mathew, Tamil Nadu's Subha Venkatesan, and Gujarat's Devyaniba Mahendras, attain Asian Championship qualification marks. 'I was a bit nervous at the start and because of that, I was a bit slow in the beginning of the race. Yet, I was able to beat Vithya. She pushed me hard and gave me a good fight,' said Rupal. Relatively unknown David P of Tamil Nadu sprang a surprise in the jumping pit by leaping to 7.94m to stun Aldrin. Aldrin, who opted out of his last three jumps, could only manage 7.83m. Aldrin's training partner and local boy Muhammed Anees Yahiya (7.70m) came third. Aldrin, who was pushed back to seventh place in the Indian Open last week after suffering a hamstring injury during the competition, said he was yet to recover from the injury and decided to compete in Kochi only because of the selection for the Asian Championships. However, none among the competitors in long jump managed to achieve the Asian Championships qualification standard. The winner, David, himself was disappointed with the distance he achieved.
