Will challenge lower court verdict in HC, seek death penalty for convicts: Ankita Bhandari's parents
DEHRADUN: A bigger battle is yet to be fought to get the death penalty for the three men who killed our daughter, said Soni Devi, the mother of Ankita Bhandari who was murdered by a resort owner and his two employees in Uttarakhand in 2022.
Hours after a district court in Kotwar on Friday sentenced the three men to rigorous life imprisonment in the case, Devi said that she was not satisfied with the lower court's verdict but it must have given some peace to the soul of her daughter.
A bigger battle is yet to be fought so that the killers get the death penalty and people think a thousand times before doing this to anyone's daughter, said Devi as she broke into tears while talking to reporters after the verdict.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Reena Negi convicted resort owner Pulkit Arya and his two employees Saurabh Bhaskar and Ankit Gupta and sentenced them to life imprisonment The court also imposed a fine of Rs 72,000 on Arya and Rs 62,000 on each of the other two accused, Special Public Prosecutor Avnish Negi.
Ankita (19), who worked as a receptionist at Vanantra Resort located in Yamkeshwar of Pauri district, was murdered on September 18, 2022 by Arya, Bhaskar and Gupta.

NREGA scam: Gujarat minister Bachu Khabad's son Balvantsinh re-arrested 3 days after release on bail
The Dahod district police in Gujarat Sunday re-arrested Balvantsinh Khabad, the older son of Gujarat Minister of State for Panchayat Bachubhai Khabad, in a fresh FIR lodged against him by the District Rural Development Authority (DRDA) for an alleged irregularity under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the Dhanpur taluka. Balvantsinh's arrest comes just three days after the Dahod sessions court on Thursday upheld the regular bail granted to the two brothers —Kiran and Balvantsinh —in the first case filed by the DRDA regarding an alleged MGNREGA scam worth Rs 71 crore. While Kiran was re-arrested minutes after being released from judicial custody on Thursday, in a second FIR lodged in connection with irregularities in Lavaria village of Devgadh Baria taluka, Balvantsinh's arrest has been made in a third FIR lodged by the DRDA in the case of incomplete projects in Bhanpur village in Dhanpur taluka of the district. Speaking to The Indian Express, Dahod Deputy Superintendent of Police Jagdishsinh Bhandari said, 'We have re-arrested Balvantsinh Khabad on Sunday morning, following a fresh FIR of DRDA. The new case involves an amount of approximately Rs 33 lakh, as about 11 incomplete MGNREGA works have been found in Bhanpur village of Dhanpur taluka.' 'The modus operandi is the same; the agencies were unauthorised as they did not participate in the tendering process and then generated bills for material supply when the projects had not been undertaken on the ground,' added Bhandari. Bhandari added that Balvantsinh will be produced in court late Sunday evening, with the police seeking his fresh remand. Earlier, Kiran Khabad was sent to seven days in police custody in connection with the case filed on Thursday. The first FIR in the multi-village MGNREGA scam was lodged on April 24 by the Dahod DRDA director. It states that villages of Kuva and Redhana in Devgadh Baria and Simamoi in Dhanpur reported forged completion reports of MGNREGA projects, with payments 'made in connivance' to 'unauthorised' agencies for supplying material. Out of the 35 unauthorised agencies, 28 were found in Devgadh Baria to have received payments for non-existent roads under MGNREGA. As many as 14 people have been arrested in the case, including the then taluka development officer (TDO) of Devgadh Baria, Darshan Patel, the current Deputy District Development Officer (DDO) of Dahod, Rasik Rathwa, who was then the TDO of Dhanpur taluka, as well as Dilip Chauhan, a former assistant programme officer (APO), and a distant relative of the Khabads. Then, APO of Dhanpur, Bhavesh Rathod, MIS operator Sanjay Baria, and the owners of other agencies that supplied materials — Parth Baria and Jagdish Baria — are among the 14 accused who have been arrested so far. Kiran and Balvantsinh are the only accused to have been arrested in more than one FIR so far.

Robbers break into retd govt employee's house in Patna, decamp with valuables worth Rs 20 lakh
Patna: Armed robbers broke into the house of a retired govt employee at Abhyodaya Nagar on Ghurdaur Road under Rajiv Nagar police station area in the state capital on early Sunday morning. The miscreants held the family members hostage at gunpoint and decamped with cash, jewellery, and other valuables worth Rs 20 lakh. According to the police, the incident occurred around 2.30am when six masked men broke the grill of the hall from the back of the house and entered it. They held the house owner, Ramavtar Singh (75), and his wife, Kamla Kumari (67), hostage at gunpoint. They searched the house for more than 30 minutes and took around Rs 6 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 14 lakh. Nitish Chandra Dhariya, sub-divisional police officer II (law and order), Patna, said the robbery was reported by the house owner's wife. "She told the police that the miscreants demanded the money from the sale of her land by threatening her with a pistol. She informed them that she didn't have the money, after which the criminals stole some jewellery and approximately Rs 6 lakh in cash from the almirah before fleeing," the SDPO said. She already received an advance of Rs 12 lakh, of which she gave Rs 6 lakh to one daughter and kept the remaining amount at home for the another daughter. The crime spot has been inspected by a dog squad and forensic teams. Further actions are being taken with both human and technical assistance in this case," Dhariya said. Mukhtar Ansari's MLA Son Removed From UP Assembly Over Hate Speech Conviction
Lucknow: MLA Abbas Ansari, son of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari has been disqualified as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly after he was convicted in a hate speech case, official sources said on Sunday. Abbas Ansari was MLA from Mau assembly constituency. The seat has now been declared vacant, the sources told PTI. Abbas Ansari, the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) MLA, was sentenced to two years imprisonment in a 2022 hate speech case by a special MP-MLA court on Saturday. According to the prosecution, during the last assembly elections, Abbas Ansari, who was contesting as an SBSP candidate from the Mau Sadar seat, had threatened the Mau administration during a public meeting at Paharpur ground on March 3, 2022, saying he will "settle scores and teach them a lesson" after the elections. Defence lawyer Daroga Singh told PTI videos that Ansari was booked under Indian Penal Code sections 189 (threat to cause harm to public servant), 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, caste, place of birth, residence and language and spoiling the harmony), 171F (undue influence in election) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Singh said after hearing both sides, special MP/MLA court Judge K P Singh convicted Abbas Ansari on Saturday and sentenced him to two years each under sections 189 and 153-A, one year under section 506 and six months imprisonment under section 171-F. All the sentences will run simultaneously. Ansari has also been fined Rs 2,000. Under the Representation of the People Act, there is a provision to terminate the membership of the legislative house if the court sentences a member to two years or more. Abbas Ansari became MLA for the first time in 2022 by winning the election from the Mau Sadar assembly seat on an SBSP ticket under the Samajwadi Party-led alliance. SBSP is currently an ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition government and the party president is a cabinet minister in the state. Before that, Abbas Ansari's father, politician Mukhtar Ansari, represented the Mau Sadar assembly seat for a long time. Mukhtar Ansari, who was incarcerated in Banda district jail, died of a cardiac arrest at a hospital in Uttar Pradesh in March 2024.
