AAIB probe into Air India crash transparent, totally unbiased: Ram Mohan Naidu
NEW DELHI: Civil aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu backed the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau's (AAIB) report and probe into the crash of Air India 171, terming the body 'unbiased', even as several lawmakers questioned him on the accident and on air safety. Ahmedabad: Wreckage of Air India's Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which was operating flight AI 171 from Ahmedabad to London, placed under tight security, seen a month after the tragedy, in Ahmedabad. (PTI) His comments in the Rajya Sabha came in the wake of a raft of reports in western media that have blamed the commander of the aircraft for the crash, claiming that he switched off fuel to the engines. AAIB's preliminary report identifies the fuel switches being in cut-off position as the reason for the engine failure, and paraphrases a conversation between the two pilots, with one asking the other whether he cut the fuel, and receiving a negative response. The report did not say what could have caused this, but said there was nothing wrong with either the engine or the aircraft. Also Read | 'Speculative': US transport safety body NTSB slams Air India crash media reports blaming pilot Replying to Rajya Sabha MP Ashokrao Chavan, Naidu said: ' AAIB got into the investigation right after the accident happened… they have started the process according to international standards… they have involved all subject matter experts… necessary people who are supposed to be participating in the investigation. They have gone through the first set of investigation processes and have given us the preliminary report.' To be sure, AAIB has responded to western media reports by clarifying that its preliminary report was only about the 'what' and not the 'why' or 'how'. The civil aviation minister said that definitive answers will only be available once the AAIB's final report is ready. Talking about the preliminary report and decoding of the black box of the B787 that crashed on June 12, Naidu said, ' Whenever these accidents happen and the black box gets damaged. It was always sent to the original equipment manufacturer and for decoding.' This time, he added, that the black box was decoded in the county for the first time and 'we have done it successfully'. Also Read: Two media houses get pilot bodies' notice for coverage of Air India crash report Replying to MP Anil Kumar Yadav Mandadi, minister of state for civil aviation Murlidhar Mohol, in a written reply, said that the data from one of the flight recorders of AI-171 (VT-ANB) has been downloaded in the Flight Recorder Lab of the AAIB at Udaan Bhawan. Naidu asked people to 'respect the process'. 'We want to stand by the truth. We want to find out what exactly happened and that is only going to be coming out once the final report (of AAIB) is placed. We have to respect the process of investigation and once that process has happened, then we can talk about what happened, how it happened and then corrective measures (can be taken),' the minister said. 'I can say this in the House and to the people of the country that AAIB has a very definitive and thorough rule-based process. They are very transparently looking at the (investigation) process right now and they are totally unbiased,' Naidu added. Referring to western media reports, he said: 'There have been multiple reports not only in India but also in the Western media, trying to air their own viewpoints and narratives but I want to tell you that the way we are seeing the investigation is through the facts. We want to stand by the truth and not what is happening with the pilots, Boeing, Air India or any other stakeholder'. We want to find out what exactly happened. We have to respect the process of investigation.' India's civil aviation regulator has always focused on safety, he said, replying to another question from Fauzia Khan: 'In terms of safety, DGCA has inspections which are planned, ramp inspections, spot checks, and night surveillance… they conduct safety audits…they keep monitoring all aircraft and airports…whenever such incidents happen… we ensure that there is no negligence and no incompetence on any of the processes, nd if something takes place because of the negligence then we take a serious actions on the operator and any necessary person and impose penalties..' Separately, in a written reply to MP John Brittas, Mrulidhar Mohol said, 'During the last six months, a total of nine show cause notices have been issued to Air India in connection with five identified safety violations. Enforcement action has been completed in respect of one violation. '

Andhra Pradesh to roll out ‘Zero Fare Tickets' for women from August 15
Drawing on the financial strain witnessed in other States that rolled out similar welfare schemes, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has taken a calibrated yet determined approach as the State gears up to launch its ambitious free RTC bus travel initiative for women from August 15. At a review meeting held at the Secretariat in Amaravati on Monday, Mr. Naidu directed transport officials to issue 'Zero Fare Tickets' to all women passengers under the scheme. Each ticket will not only validate the free journey but also detail the travel route, the exact subsidy amount borne by the government, and the amount saved by the passenger. 'The aim is to make women clearly aware of the economic benefits they receive from this initiative,' the Chief Minister said, adding that the ticket itself should serve as a tangible representation of the government's support. To ensure transparency and accountability, the Chief Minister ordered the development of specialised software to capture and display all financial benefits directly on the ticket. Sustainability However, mindful of the budgetary implications, the Chief Minister held extensive discussions with officials on how such schemes have impacted the fiscal health of other States. He underscored the importance of avoiding delays in implementation but stressed that the long-term sustainability of the APSRTC must remain a priority. With the financial well-being of the APSRTC in sharp focus, Mr. Naidu laid out a broader vision for sustainable operations. He called for immediate steps to identify alternative revenue streams, cut operational costs, and draft a comprehensive profitability plan. In a progressive move, he announced that only AC electric buses would be procured going forward. He also proposed converting existing buses to electric models to reduce maintenance costs and setting up of charging infrastructure at all RTC depots. He floated the idea of in-house power generation to support the green fleet, a step aimed at long-term energy security and self-reliance. 'This transition is not just about cost savings, but also about building a sustainable and self-reliant public transport system,' he added. It may be recalled that the free bus ride for women in RTC buses is one of the promises made under Super Six as a run-up to the general elections in 2024. The scheme, while inspired by the goal of empowering women and promoting inclusive growth, comes with the awareness of pitfalls experienced elsewhere. Andhra Pradesh's strategy, however, combines welfare with fiscal prudence — striving to avoid the economic burdens that have beleaguered similar initiatives in other States. As the State readies for the August 15 rollout, all eyes are on how Andhra Pradesh balances social welfare and economic sustainability, setting what could be a new benchmark in public transport policy.

Arrest of YSRCP leaders intended to divert people's attention from failures of government: Amarnath
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former Minister Gudivada Amarnath alleged that the Chandrababu Naidu government was arresting YSRCP leaders as it was unable to digest the tremendous response to the 'Babu Surety – Mosam Guarantee' programme of the YSRCP. Addressing a media conference here on Monday, Mr. Amarnath said that Mr. Naidu wants to divert the attention of people from the failures of his government to fulfil their election promises. They have booked around 2,800 cases after coming to power. The way in which two TDP-friendly vernacular dailies were reporting on the remand or arrest of YSRCP leaders even before the investigation agency took any action indicated that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the government was basing its probe on the reports given in those two newspapers, he alleged. The YSRCP leader said that the liquor scam case was based on 'oral evidence' that some officials had spoken to the YSRCP leaders. It was common for officials to speak to the ruling party leaders, Ministers or the Chief Minister in any government. The officials would be speaking to Mr. Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister K. Pawan Kalyan on a regular basis and wonder whether it could be construed as nexus with the officials, he ask Mr. Amarnath alleged that the TDP government was arresting the YSRCP leaders with a political vengeance. He dared the government to show the proof of YSRCP leaders' involvement in the cases. The chargesheet says that the cases were booked based on 'assumption'. It does not say that money was received or that the leaders were caught taking money. This proves that the YSRCP leaders were being implicated in the cases, he alleged. He recalled that the YSRCP government had shown evidence on the alleged involvement of Mr. Naidu in the skill development scam between 2014-19. He alleged that the TDP-led government was putting the 15 medical colleges sanctioned during the YSRCP regime for sale to privatise them.
