Maruti Suzuki's Manesar Plant Gets India's Largest Automobile Multi-Modal Cargo Terminal

Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday inaugurated the country's largest automobile multi-modal cargo terminal at the Maruti Suzuki India Limited plant in Haryana's Manesar. The new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminal at Maruti Suzuki's plant significantly enhances the logistics efficiency of automobile transportation. The Manesar facility is connected to Patli railway station through a 10 km dedicated rail link, which forms part of the 121.7 km Haryana Orbital Rail Corridor being developed by the Haryana Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (HRIDC).
The construction of this 10 km link involved an investment of Rs 800 crore, with the HRIDC contributing Rs 684 crore and the remaining amount funded by Maruti Suzuki. The loading capacity of this Gati Shakti cargo terminal is one of the highest in India at 4.5 lakh automobiles per annum.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted the significant transformation Indian Railways has undergone over the past decade. "Before 2014, the Railways' annual budget hovered around Rs 24,000–25,000 crore. Now, it has been increased to Rs 2.5 lakh crore,' the minister said.
"Basic passenger amenities like toilets were absent in many stations and coaches. In the last two and a half years, a focused campaign has been launched to increase the number of general coaches. More than 1,200 general coaches were added in just the past year," he added.
The minister further stated that a major decision was taken recently to upgrade passenger train services. Over 100 MEMU trains will now be augmented — increasing their composition from 8 to 12 coaches to 16 to 20 coaches — greatly benefiting short-distance commuters. A new factory has been set up at Kazipet in Andhra Pradesh for the manufacturing of over 100 MEMU trains.
Referring to the successful rollout of Namo Bharat trains, Vaishnaw said: "Encouraged by the strong public response, we have decided to produce 50 new Namo Bharat trains to cater to growing passenger demand."
On the passenger and freight performance front, he said: "In the financial year 2023–24, Indian Railways transported approximately 720 crore passengers and 1,617 million tonnes of freight. This performance helped Indian Railways achieve the second-highest freight volume globally, marking 2023–24 as a historic year."
About passenger convenience, he mentioned the ongoing pilot project, where passenger reservation charts are now being prepared 24 hours in advance, replacing the earlier norm of 4 hours before train departure. The initiative has received highly positive feedback from citizens and is expected to significantly improve the travel experience.
Discussing the rollout of the Amrit Bharat Trains, the minister stated: "Three Amrit Bharat trains are currently operational and have received an overwhelming public response. In the coming days, six more Amrit Bharat trains will be launched, production of 50 more trains is underway, and more batches will follow."
.Highlighting ongoing infrastructure investment in the state, he added: "Currently, projects worth Rs 11,800 crore are underway in Haryana. Redevelopment of 34 railway stations is in progress under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. In addition, 540 road overbridges and underpasses have been constructed across the state's railway network."
Vaishnaw also mentioned that the Railway Coach Factory, Sonipat, is undergoing modernisation. 'The upgraded facility will soon be ready for inauguration and will play a key role in enhancing our coach production capacity,' he said.
Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, the state's Minister of Industries Rao Narbir Singh, and Maruti Suzuki CEO & Managing Director Hisashi Takeuchi were present at the event.

The inclusion of death-cum-retirement gratuity in UPS, a long-pending demand of a large section of Central government staffers, is expected to encourage many covered under National Pension System (NPS) to opt for it. Singh, who was addressing a press conference in Delhi on the 'transformational' journey of ministry of personnel, public grievances and pensions over the last 11 years, said the assured payout under UPS 'reflects the government's commitment to ensure social security for all categories of employees under the NPS'. The department of financial services had notified UPS on January 24, 2025, with the aim of providing Central government employees covered under NPS, a guaranteed pension similar to OPS but with a contribution model like NPS. Employees covered under NPS can switch to UPS, ensuring broader pension coverage. In the event of the pensioner's death, their family will receive 60 per cent of the last pension drawn. Employees contribute 10% of their basic salary and DA, while the government contributes 18.5 per cent, a higher share than 14 per cent under NPS. An order issued by the department of pensions and pensioners' welfare (DoPPW) on Wednesday clarified that central government employees covered under the UPS shall also be eligible for the benefit of retirement gratuity and death gratuity under the provisions of the Central Civil Service (Payment of Gratuity under National Pension System) Rules, 2021. A second order specified options to avail benefits under OPS on death of a government servant covered under UPS, during service or his discharge from service on account of invalidation or disability. 'The order gives an option to revert to OPS in case of death in service. It is progressive in nature and addresses the clarifications being sought by employees,' DoPPW Secretary V Srinivas said, adding that 'UPS pensioners will be eligible for Rs 25 lakh gratuity also'. President of the All India NPS Employees Federation, Manjeet Singh Patel, welcomed the order, saying that the inclusion of death-cum-retirement gratuity in UPS will remove all the misconceptions of the employees and encourage them to opt for UPS, said PTI. In the case of the death of a government servant while in service, the last option exercised by the deceased employee before his death shall be treated as final, and the family shall have no right to revise the option.

BBMP begins blacktopping for 218 roads

The civic body is now engaged in garnishing 218 major roads with black topping—a total of 670 km at a modest Rs 694 crore. M Lokesh, Chief Engineer, Road Infrastructure Department, BBMP, says the 'black' magic would transform the city roads to 'best' standards. He said the works are expected to be completed in the next 10 months. In phase-1, BBMP claims it has fixed potholes on Mysuru Road and Magadi Road and the roads are in very good condition now. The work was taken up in these stretches due to heavy vehicle movement. Lokesh said that the asphalt work will also involve using stone matrix (use of fibre material in the bitumen) and they will add it at low lying and areas where water stagnates during rains and other reasons. 'The bitumen, even if comes in contact with water, will not give away and the road will last long,' said Lokesh. 'By the end of December 2025, we hope to complete the works. The BBMP will also take up footpath repairs wherever it is necessary,' he added. Road infrastructure expert D Prasad, a member of the Indian Road Congress, said the BBMP should have taken up the project in April and feared about the durability of the project. 'The base is wet due to the good monsoon. The blacktopping of roads may last up to a year now,' he said. He also added that before blacktopping, the officials have to cut the potholes into box size, add bitumen and take up proper fixation before tarring the entire road stretch as this will avoid undulation. However, an engineer from BBMP said the blacktopping is done only when there are no rains and the base is dry. 'The work from Jnanabharathi Metro Stop to Mysuru Road covering 5.35 km and Magadi Road covering 2.5 km is almost complete and the work was taken up from May and we have completed it. We braved rains and fixed potholes and later when the weather was dry, we blacktopped and used good bitumen. The roads will last over three years now,' claimed a BBMP engineer.

40 new enforcement vehicles to check transport violations in Karnataka
BENGALURU: There are 3.37 crore vehicles registered in Karnataka, till May-end. To monitor the increasing number of vehicles, to carry out regular inspections, promote road safety, and prevent accidents, 40 enforcement vehicles have been procured for the transport department, said Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy. Addressing the media after flagging off the new vehicles here on Wednesday, Reddy said these enforcement vehicles will go on rounds, inspect vehicles on the road and slap fines for safety violations. He said that from 2023 till date, 123 motor vehicle inspectors have been recruited by the transport department, and that with the new vehicles, they will intensify enforcement. 'During the vehicle inspections, these inspectors will be checking multiple factors, including vehicle condition, functioning tail lamp, retro reflective tapes and rear marking plate. Fines will be slapped on vehicle owners based on the violations,' the minister said, adding that the transport department carries out road safety awareness programmes regularly, educating the masses about safe road use and preventing accidents. Officials said that a total of 4,01,595 cases were registered during 2024-25, and a total of Rs 197.50 crore was collected as fine for various offences.
