GRS ready to go solo in state polls, says Hajiji
PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is ready to contest in the upcoming Sabah election on its own if Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional's decision to cooperate for the state polls is final, says GRS chairman Hajiji Noor.
Hajiji said GRS has consistently held that local Sabah parties should be the backbone and head of the state government, without sidelining the important role national parties play in the larger political framework.
The Sabah chief minister said this was because local parties had a better understanding of the realities, cultures and needs of Sabahans.
'If PH and BN's decision to cooperate for the state election is final, then GRS is ready to go solo and focus on working with other local parties.
'To stray from this principle would mean neglecting the aspirations of the majority of Sabahans,' he said in a statement.
Hajiji said GRS's struggle was for political stability and the people's welfare, and that he had consistently repeated that the current GRS-PH state government needed to be strengthened.
He said this was because his state government represented a form of cooperation that has contributed to the overall strength of the federal unity government.
'To sideline local aspirations in the context of Sabah's political landscape would not be in line with the people's sentiments at the grassroots level.'
Hajiji said GRS's top leadership will meet soon to set its direction for the state polls. He will also hold formal discussions with parties in the state administration to get their views on the issue.
GRS and PH are currently allies in Hajiji's government, while BN sits in the opposition in the state assembly with Warisan. All four parties are allies in the federal government.
Earlier, the unity government secretariat announced that BN and PH have agreed to work together for the Sabah state election, which must be held before the year ends.
This followed a meeting between PH and BN chairmen, Anwar Ibrahim and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

KOTA KINABALU: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) Women's chief Datuk Seri Azizah Mohd Dun says the wing remains committed to the leadership's decision on working with Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the upcoming 17th State Election. Azizah stressed that any later statements suggesting other alliances would not change their focus, as they will only adhere to what has been set by the party leadership. She added that GRS Women will defend the coalition's current seats and hopes existing women leaders will be retained. Prime Minister and PH Chairman Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim earlier confirmed discussions with Barisan Nasional (BN) and GRS to avoid clashes in the state polls, aiming for an understanding that supports stability and progress for Sabah in line with the Federal Government's leadership. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? The investigation into a video featuring Dr Akmal Saleh was taken over by Bukit Aman's special crime investigation unit today, Penang police said. PETALING JAYA : Police have launched an investigation into a viral Facebook video featuring Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh making statements that were considered to be 'hate speech' that could disturb public peace. Penang police chief Azizee Ismail said an investigation under the Sedition Act and the Penal Code (for criminal intimidation) was launched after a report was lodged on Aug 12. The case was taken over today by the special crime investigation unit of Bukit Aman, he said in a statement this evening. Azizee Ismail. 'To date, two police reports have been filed by members of the public in Penang, and both reports are currently being investigated,' he said. It was not clear which video is the subject of the investigation. However, in recent days, Akmal has posted videos concerning a Jalur Gemilang mishap at a Penang hardware store, where the national flag was hoisted upside down. The store owner later corrected the mistake and apologised, but was briefly arrested before being released on bail. In one of Akmal's videos, he said prosecutors had two days to charge the shop owner, failing which he said he would personally 'teach this 'Ah Pek' (uncle) how to correctly put up a flag'. Akmal is scheduled to give a statement at the Dang Wangi police headquarters at 11pm tonight.

Address gaps in permanent parliamentary committee proposal, MPs told
The Dewan Rakyat passed amendments to several provisions of its Standing Orders on Aug 12. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The G25 group of prominent retired civil servants has called on MPs to close the gaps in the government's plan to make parliamentary special select committees (PSSCs) permanent. While it backed the government's move on the matter, the group warned that the current proposal had gaps that could undermine its effectiveness. Its concerns included the standing orders committee's proposed cap of 10 PSSCs, which G25 said would be insufficient to cover all ministries and cross-ministerial portfolios, which could overburden MPs and leave key policy areas without scrutiny. 'The absence of a requirement for future governments to place all ministries and major public institutions under committee oversight could also result in serious blind spots. 'If ministerial roles change or new agencies are created without this requirement, some of them might escape proper oversight,' it said in a statement today. The group also said that vital institutions such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission were not explicitly included in the proposed structure, leaving them without this avenue of accountability. G25 also called for amendments to Standing Order 54(1) so that bills are automatically referred to the relevant committee, except in urgent cases. It said committee reports should be debated and voted on in the main chamber rather than in the special chamber, where ministers may not be obliged to respond. The group added that committees should review annual and supplementary budgets, and be empowered to summon witnesses, compel documents, and hold public inquiries when necessary. 'A permanent committee system, if designed with sufficient scope, powers, and resources, has the potential to transform Malaysia's parliamentary culture and strengthen the checks and balances in our institutions. 'This is essential to building Malaysia's democratic maturity,' it said. The Dewan Rakyat passed amendments to several provisions of its Standing Orders on Aug 12 to elevate PSSCs to standing committees, codify parliamentary practices, and improve MPs' ability to conduct House business.
