Aggression only leads to defeat, Taiwan president says on world war anniversary
Taiwan has this year sought to cast the war as a lesson to China, which views the democratic island as its own territory, to show how aggression will end in failure, and to remind the world it was not the government now in Beijing that won the war.
The Chinese government at the time was the Republic of China, part of the U.S., British and Russian-led alliance, and its forces did much of the fighting against Japan, putting on pause a bitter civil war with Mao Zedong's Communists whose military also fought the Japanese.
The republican government then fled to Taiwan in 1949 after finally being defeated by Mao, and Republic of China remains the democratic island's official name.
Late on Thursday, Taiwan said it had banned government officials from attending next month's military parade planned by Beijing to mark the end of World War Two, along with former senior defence, intelligence and diplomatic officials, though that does not include ordinary members of the public.
If former officials insist on going, penalties would include the revocation of pensions, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Office said.
China's Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In a post on his Facebook account that did not directly mention China, Lai said the war served as a stark reminder to the world that peace is priceless and war has no winners.
"World War Two was a catastrophe in history, triggered by the personal ambitions of a few dictators, extreme ideologies and military expansionism," he wrote.
Today, people in Taiwan take freedom, democracy, peace and prosperity for granted, but lessons from history must be learned, Lai added.
"The most valuable lesson of World War Two is that unity leads to victory, while aggression leads to defeat."
China labels Lai a "separatist", and has ramped up military activities around the island, including holding large-scale war games. Lai rejects Beijing's sovereignty claims, saying only Taiwan's people can decide their future.

Putin's huge team started their journey across to the US earlier today as they sped through the shabby streets of Magadan. The despot is expected to board a jet to Alaska soon and complete the nine-hour trip to the 49th state. Trump will officially greet Putin with peace talks starting at around 8:30pm UK time. Putin has continued to order barbaric attacks on Ukraine just hours before he is expected to be pressured into agreeing to a peace deal. The US President has been adamant the bloodshed in Ukraine must end but a merciless Putin is yet to relent. He continued to launch aerial bombs in Dnipropetrovsk region overnight with his troops edging forwards on the frontline. Ukrainian forces have been forced to evacuate a town in Donetsk as the intense fighting rages on at the hands of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups. The station is known to send out strange messages during tense times for Russia with experts saying it is likely linked to the Kremlin's nuclear defence forces. Today the signals NZHTI 88751 MAREL 5057 6881 and NZHTI 03649 STOKOTON 2751 2830 were broadcasted with no explanation. The same mysterious codes were sounded only six weeks before the start of Putin's illegal invasion of Ukraine. Kyiv launched their own warning shots at Russia as they sent a final message to the Kremlin ahead of the talks. They are believed to have downed Putin's £32 million Su-30SM fighter close to Ukrainian-controlled Snake Island in the Black Sea. Russia was also hit by heavy Ukrainian bombardment on the Olya port in Russia's Astrakhan region. The port has been used to import military goods for Putin's war machine from Iran via the Caspian Sea across the past three years. Ukraine also exploded Syzran Oil Refinery with a major drone swarm which triggered deafening explosions and sparked two major blazes. Russia's defence ministry said it had intercepted 55 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions overnight. Friday's historic peace summit is being held at the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska. It will be the first meeting between the pair since 2019. A notable absentee from the peace talks is Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump is expected to call up Kyiv's brave wartime leader alongside his European allies following the summit to discuss the progress made. Chinese diplomat appears at Beijing event after Reuters report of questioning
BEIJING, Aug 15 (Reuters) - A Chinese diplomat, who Reuters reported had been taken for questioning by Chinese authorities, appeared at a diplomatic event in Beijing on Friday evening. Sun Haiyan, a senior Chinese diplomat and former ambassador to Singapore, appeared as a guest at an event organised by India's embassy in Beijing. In response to a question from Reuters at the event, Sun did not comment directly on whether authorities had detained or questioned her, saying, "Well, I'm here." She called the Reuters report "irresponsible". Reuters had reported on Friday that Sun had been taken for questioning by authorities earlier this month, citing three people with knowledge of the matter, who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. Reuters could not determine the matters the questioning related to. Chinese authorities questioned Sun around the same time they questioned Liu Jianchao, widely seen as a potential foreign minister candidate, two of the three people with knowledge told Reuters. Liu's questioning by authorities was first reported by the Wall Street Journal and then by Reuters on Monday. Liu, 61, could not be reached for comment. Reuters could not establish if Liu was still being detained. China's State Council Information Office, which handles media queries for the government, and the International Department did not respond to Reuters requests for comment on Friday. Reuters renewed the request for comment to both agencies after Sun's appearance on Friday. Neither agency had an immediate response. Reuters had reported none of the three sources who requested anonymity in discussing Sun's questioning knew the basis of the questioning of either diplomat. Profiles of both Liu and Sun remain on the International Department's website. The detention of Liu marked the highest-level disappearance of a diplomat since China ousted its former foreign minister and President Xi Jinping's protege, Qin Gang, in 2023, following an unexplained public absence. Liu's detention followed a work trip to Singapore, South Africa and Algeria. His house was searched in early August, Reuters has reported. Sun's last public appearance was on August 1, when she attended a reception hosted by Nepal's embassy in Beijing. Sun, 53, is the first woman to serve as a deputy head of the Communist Party's International Department. In that role, she serves as Liu's deputy. Sun was China's ambassador to Singapore between May 2022 and July 2023. She joined the International Department in 1997, where she served in a wide range of roles, including spokesperson and head of the bureau responsible for ties with Southeast Asian countries. She also served as a district Party Committee official in the city of Zibo, Shandong province, in 2008.
