India, Nepal strengthen health cooperation at WHA78 bilateral meeting in Geneva
Geneva: Reinforcing the strong health partnership between the two nations, India and Nepal held a significant bilateral meeting in Geneva on Tuesday on the sidelines of the 78th World Health Assembly (WHA78).
The meeting, held between India's Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava and Nepal's Minister of Health and Population Pradip Paudel, focused on key health issues such as affordable drugs, communicable and non-communicable diseases (NCDs), digital health, and capacity building of the health workforce.
"A bilateral meeting took place today on the sidelines of #WHA78 between Health Secretary, Govt of India, Punya Salila Srivastava and Pradip Paudel, Minister of Health and Population, Govt of Nepal.
Bilateral issues on health such as ensuring affordable drugs, communicable diseases, NCDs, digital health and capacity building of health workforce were discussed," the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) stated in a post on X.
"The meeting also reinforced the strong partnership and support shared by India and Nepal," The MoHFW further noted.
Earlier, India was conferred with the certificate of eliminating Trachoma as a public health problem at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva.
Union Health Minister JP Nadda lauded this achievement and said it was a proud moment for the nation.
"A proud moment for the nation at WHA78 (World Health Assembly), India has been conferred the Certificate of Elimination of Trachoma as a Public Health Problem by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General at WHO, at the 78th World Health Assembly in Geneva," Nadda stated in a post on X.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually addressed the 78th Session of the World Health Assembly in Geneva from New Delhi on Tuesday, highlighting India's contributions to global health initiatives under the unifying theme of "One World for Health".
PM Modi mentioned India's Ayushman Bharat scheme, the world's largest health insurance programme, which covers 580 million people and provides free treatment.
He outlined three cores for the future of a healthy world - inclusion, integrated vision and collaboration.

India: NEET-PG 2025 postponed; exam to be held in single shift as per SC order
New Delhi: The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) on Monday announced the postponement of the NEET-PG 2025 examination, following a directive from the Supreme Court to conduct the exam in a single shift while ensuring transparency and security. In compliance with the court's order, the NBEMS stated that NEET-PG 2025, initially scheduled for June 15, will now be held at a later date to allow for logistical adjustments. The board emphasised that the postponement is aimed at expanding the number of test centres and upgrading the required infrastructure to meet the court's standards for fairness and security. The NBEMS order read, "NBEMS will conduct NEET-PG 2025 in a single shift. NEET-PG 2025, scheduled to be held on 15.06.2025, has been postponed to arrange for more Test Centres and required infrastructure. The revised date for the conduct of NEET-PG 2025 shall be notified shortly." The announcement comes in response to the Supreme Court's order in the case of Writ Petition No. 456/2025 (Aditi & Ors vs National Board of Examination in Medical Sciences & Ors), where the apex court directed the authorities to make necessary arrangements for conducting the NEET-PG 2025. "We, accordingly, direct the respondents to make necessary arrangements for holding the NEET-PG 2025 examination in one shift, duly ensuring that complete transparency is maintained and secure centres are identified and commissioned," said the bench in an order. The NEET-PG exam is a key gateway for admission to postgraduate medical courses across India. Conducting the exam in a single shift is expected to reduce disparities in difficulty levels and improve the overall integrity of the examination process. The Supreme Court on May 30 had directed the National Board of Examination (NBE) to hold the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Postgraduate courses (NEET-PG) 2025 in a single shift. A vacation bench of Justices Vikram Nath, Sanjay Kumar, and NK Anjaria rejected the decision of NBE to hold the exam in two shifts, saying it creates "arbitrariness". The bench said it will be open for NBE to apply for extension of time if they find that the arrangements can't be done by 15 June, the scheduled date of exam. "Holding the exam in two shifts leads to arbitrariness and cannot give a level playing field. The question papers in the two shifts can never be of the same difficulty level... The examining body ought to have considered making arrangements for holding the examination in one shift," the order stated. As the counsel of NBE said that to hold exam in one shift, 900 extra centres will have to be arranged, which is not possible before June 15, the bench said, "We are not ready to accept that in entire country and considering the technological advancements in this country the examining body could not find enough centres to hold the examination and one shift." The counsel further said that NBE has even very limited centres to hold the exam in one shift. "Infrastructure for Wi-Fi, good computer safety security, etc. All possible problems have been considered and then this solution (of two shifts) has been given," added the counsel. The counsel said that out of over 2.5 lakh candidates, only a handful of them have approached the court against the NBE decision to hold the exam in two shifts. The top court was hearing petitions challenging the conduct of NEET-PG 2025 in two shifts.

India: Over 10,000 shifted to safer locations amid torrential rainfall in Tripura
Agartala: Over 10,000 people have been shifted to safer locations across Tripura as torrential monsoon rains battered the state over the past 48 hours, officials said on Sunday. Triggered by intense moisture incursion, the heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has disrupted connectivity, inundated low-lying areas, and forced thousands into relief camps, even as authorities brace for more downpours in the coming days. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Agartala, has issued a red alert across all districts of Tripura after incessant monsoon rains battered the state over the past 48 hours. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, intensified by strong moisture incursion, has severely disrupted connectivity and forced thousands into relief camps. In a release issued by the IMD, active monsoon conditions are forecasted to persist, with a high likelihood of further heavy rains today and tomorrow. In response, state authorities have mobilised rescue teams and activated emergency protocols. Bodhjung Nagar in West Tripura recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours at 198.5 mm, followed by Kailashahar in Unakoti (192.2 mm), Jirania in West Tripura (175.5 mm), and Agartala (140 mm). A total of 14 rescue teams--11 in West Tripura and 3 in Unakoti--comprising personnel from NDRF, SDRF, Assam Rifles, Fire Services, Civil Defence, Bharat Scouts, and Aapda Mitra volunteers have been deployed. Sixty relief camps have been established across West Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, and North Tripura, currently sheltering approximately 2,800 families and over 10,600 people. Numerous roads in North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, and West Tripura were temporarily blocked due to landslides and fallen trees. Quick response units from SDRF, the Forest Department, and PWD have cleared many of the affected routes. Preliminary reports show that 201 houses have been damaged, with 92 severely and 109 partially damaged, mostly in Gomati, Khowai, Sepahijala, and North Tripura. The Howrah River in Agartala reached 10.91 meters at 5 PM, crossing the danger level, although it has shown a receding trend over the past hour after remaining stagnant since morning. In Agartala city, stormwater drainage systems comprising 17 pump houses effectively cleared water stagnation within 2 to 3 hours despite high-intensity rainfall in a short period. Tripura Chief Minister, along with senior officials including the MP (Rajya Sabha), Mayor of Agartala, Revenue Secretary, DM and SP of West Tripura, visited several affected areas and relief camps including those at Chandrapur, Pratapgarh English Medium School, Vivekananda School, Pragati School, Tulsibati School, and B. R. Ambedkar School. Authorities have advised citizens to stay calm, avoid venturing near rivers and low-lying areas, and follow instructions from local administrations. The state government continues to work in close coordination with all departments to ensure relief, rehabilitation, and risk mitigation efforts are carried out efficiently and effectively.

India: Rajasthan reports 54 COVID-19 cases, one death
Jaipur: Amid rising COVID-19 cases in parts of the country, Rajasthan Health Minister Gajendra Singh said on Friday that the state has reported 54 cases and one death so far. The minister clarified that the death was linked to comorbidities, particularly tuberculosis, and that the current variant in circulation resembles the common flu. "So far, 54 cases have been reported, and one death has occurred. However, the patient was severely affected by tuberculosis. As of now, only one patient is admitted to SMS Hospital--a child infected with the Omicron variant, which is not very serious. It presents symptoms similar to the common flu. There is no cause for concern at the moment. There's no significant spread at the moment, but people are still advised to take necessary precautions," Singh told ANI. According to the Information and Public Relations Department, 15 new cases were reported on Friday--one each from AIIMS Jodhpur, Rabindranath Tagore Medical College (RNT), Sawai Man Singh Medical College (SMS), Rajasthan University of Health Sciences (RUHS), and Government Medical College (GMC), Udaipur. District-wise COVID-19 cases in Rajasthan are: Jaipur - 33, Udaipur - 10, Jodhpur - 8, Bikaner - 5, Didwana - 5, Ajmer - 2, Balotra - 2, Dausa - 1, Phalodi - 1, Sawai Madhopur - 1, and others - 1. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed that while COVID-19 cases were reported again in parts of the country, the current variants in circulation were showing mild symptoms similar to the Omicron strain. Arjun Dang, Chief Executive Officer of Dr. Dangs Lab, said the rising number of cases was attributed to more transmissible sub-variants. "We must understand that the current spreading variants are again a sublineage of the Omicron virus. Additionally, in states like Tamil Nadu and Gujarat, we have certain other sub-variants that have been named Variants Under Monitoring, and these are basically of two types, LF7 and NV181. Currently, the cases that we are seeing are more transmissible. They can infect people easily, but again, from the severity perspective, till now, we have not seen any severe cases," Dang told ANI.
