Jimmy Kimmel blasts CBS over ‘The Late Show' cancellation as he supports pal Stephen Colbert: ‘F–k you'

New York Post18-07-2025
Jimmy Kimmel blasted CBS for axing 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' after 10 seasons while throwing his support behind his friend and fellow late-night host.
'Love you Stephen. F–k you and all your Sheldons CBS,' Kimmel wrote on his personal Instagram story Thursday, appearing to reference CBS's hit 'The Big Bang Theory' spinoff, 'Young Sheldon.'
The 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' host's outburst comes as the network announced its plan to cancel 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' in May 2026, citing 'purely a financial decision.'

The network said it considered the 61-year-old late-night host 'irreplaceable' and that 'the broadcast will be remembered in the pantheon of greats that graced late-night television.'
The decision marks the end of CBS's historic late-night programming, which began when David Letterman left NBC in 1993 to host 'The Late Show with David Letterman.'
Letterman left his iconic show in 2015, and Colbert stepped in as host after gaining popularity on 'The Daily Show' and 'The Colbert Report.'
Colbert — who said he was made aware of the news Wednesday evening — addressed the cancellation during the taping of Thursday's show at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in New York.
'Before we start the show, I want to let you know something I found out just last night. Next year will be our last season. The network will be ending the 'Late Show' in May,' he told the audience, who booed profusely over the news.

'I share your feelings,' Colbert replied.
Colbert assured the audience he was not 'being replaced,' but that the network was ending the 'Late Show' franchise entirely.
'I do want to say that the folks at CBS have been great partners. I'm so grateful to the Tiffany Network for giving me this chair and this beautiful theater to call home,' he said.
Colbert then reflected on his time as host and told the audience how 'grateful' he was for the fans who 'joined us every night in here, out there, all around the world, Mr and Mrs. America and all the ships at sea.'

'I'm grateful to share the stage with this band every night. I am extraordinarily deeply grateful to the 200 people who work here,' he said.
'We get to do this show for each other — every day, all day. And I've had the pleasure and responsibility of sharing what we do every day with you in front of this camera for the last 10 years.'
Colbert said he wishes 'somebody else' were taking over instead of seeing the show end for good.
He then concluded his statement by saying he's 'looking forward' to putting on the show with the 'usual gang of idiots for another 10 months.'
7 CBS said that it is retiring ''The Late Show' franchise' for good in May 2026.

'It's going to be fun,' he assured.
Kimmel and Colbert aren't just late-night TV peers, but good friends who share the same agent, James 'Babydoll' Dixon, Kimmel revealed while appearing as a guest on Colbert's show in 2015.
The hosts also revealed that viewers and critics expected them to be enemies. Kimmel said he believes it stems from the historic feud with their predecessors, Letterman and Jay Leno.
'People want us to fight and everything like that,' Kimmel said while appearing as a guest on Colbert's show in 2015. 'It's weird.'

'People thought it would just continue like the crusade,' Kimmel said. 'I like you, though. I might even love you.'
'Really?' Colbert responded.
'If you died, I'd cry like a baby,' Kimmel shared. 'God forbid.'
'Wow. If I didn't have a show, I'd come to your funeral,' Colbert quipped.
They have appeared on each other's shows multiple times over the years and even collaborated as presenters at the 2019 Emmy Awards.

In 2023, they were also co-hosts of the limited-series Spotify podcast 'Strike Force Five' with fellow late-night hosts Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and John Oliver.
Seven-time Grammy winner Jon Batiste, who served as the 'Late Show' bandleader from 2015 to 2022, joined Kimmel as those who were upset over Colbert's cancellation.
Batiste posted an emoji of a goat and a broken heart on his Instagram story, symbolizing the host as the 'greatest of all time.'
Colbert has hosted nearly 1,700 episodes throughout almost 10 seasons and is ending despite frequently being ranked the top show in late-night television, according to Nielsen data.
The most recent ratings from Nielsen show Colbert as winning his timeslot, with about 2.417 million viewers across 41 new episodes.

Jimmy Kimmel secures Italian citizenship in case he needs to escape Trump's second term

Jimmy Kimmel revealed he has his Italian passport ready, just in case. During an interview with comedian Sarah Silverman on her podcast, the 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' host discussed how 'much worse' the president's second term has been for the country, without getting into specifics. He said he has obtained Italian citizenship as a result. Kimmel's Italian heritage from his mother's side gave him the option to double up his citizenship. 'What's going on [with Trump] is as bad as you thought it was gonna be,' Kimmel told his ex-girlfriend. 'I feel like it's probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be,' he added. Kimmel has criticized Trump pretty much nonstop on his late-night show since before the president first won the White House in 2016. Trump has previously called Kimmel 'stupid' and recently said the ABC host would be the next to lose his job after CBS announced in July that it wasn't renewing Stephen Colbert's contract. Trump celebrated the news that 'The Late Show' would end soon and predicted Kimmel would face the same fate. '[Kimmel] has less talent than Colbert,' the president posted on Truth Social. Trump doubled down during a press conference last week, saying anyone off the street could do a better job than Kimmel and other mainstream late-night hosts. Since Trump won in 2020, comedians Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres have re-settled in Ireland and England, respectively. Kimmel has been on a summer hiatus from his show and will return to his hosting duties in September.

Brent Musburger to take part in celebration of The NFL Today's 50th anniversary in Week 3

Several NFL teams will be wearing throwback jerseys for games during the 2025 season and CBS will be throwing things back as well. CBS announced on Tuesday that they will celebrate the 50th anniversary of The NFL Today before Week 3's games. The network also announced that one of the original hosts will be taking part in the festivities. Brent Musburger will appear on the show along with James Brown, Bill Cowher, Nate Burleson, and Matt Ryan. Musburger, who hosted the live pregame show from 1975-1990, was joined by Irv Cross and Phyllis George on the show in 1975. Per a release from CBS, the coverage of the week's games will also include flashback clips and other flourishes dating back to the first year that Musburger and company were on the network.

Jimmy Kimmel obtained Italian citizenship in case he needs to flee second Trump administration: 'It's so much worse'

Rosie O'Donnell and Ellen DeGeneres previously revealed that they left the U.S. for the U.K. after Donald Trump's reelection. If worse comes to worst, Jimmy Kimmel definitely has options. The late-night host, who has been a vocal detractor of President Donald Trump throughout his first and second term in office, recently shared that if he ever needs out of the country, he already has an exit plan. While joining his ex-girlfriend, Sarah Silverman, on her podcast last week, the comedian discussed the drastic reaction that some have had to Trump's return to the White House. "A lot of people I know are thinking about, where are they going to get citizenship?," Silverman observed. "I did get Italian citizenship," Kimmel replied. "I do have that." Addressing Trump's presidency, he continued, "What's going on is... as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it's so much worse. It's just unbelievable. I feel like it's probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be." According to the Italian news agency Ansa, Kimmel secured Italian citizenship earlier this year after proving his ancestral lineage (his maternal great-grandparents emigrated to New York from Naples after an 1883 earthquake devastated their hometown, Ischia). Should he actually put that citizenship to use by relocating to Italy, Kimmel would join a growing list of celebs who have opted not to live in the U.S. now that Trump is back in office. Rosie O'Donnell, who famously has an acrimonious relationship with the president, revealed earlier this year that she fled the country for Ireland ahead of Trump's inauguration. "I knew after reading Project 2025 that if Trump got in, it was time for me and my non-binary child to leave the country," she told CNN in April. "It's as bad as they promised and even a little bit worse, and it's been heartbreaking and personally very sad to watch." Trump has since threatened to revoke O'Donnell's citizenship. (According to a Harvard analysis, Trump has no constitutional authority to do so.) In addition to O'Donnell, former daytime host Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia de Rossi have relocated to the U.K. countryside. "We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis," DeGeneres revealed in July. "And we're like, 'We're staying here.'" Much like O'Donnell, Kimmel's tendency to question and bash the President have not gone unnoticed. Following news that CBS would be axing The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Trump boasted that Kimmel would be next on the chopping block. "The word is, and it's a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone,' Trump wrote on TruthSocial last month. "These are people with absolutely NO TALENT, who were paid Millions of Dollars for, in all cases, destroying what used to be GREAT Television. It's really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!"Kimmel responded to Trump on Instagram: "I'm hearing you're next. Or maybe it's just another wonderful secret," he wrote, referencing a Wall Street Journal story, published July 17, which claims Trump sent a letter to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003 that was included in a birthday album of well-wishes.
