Govt keeps petrol, diesel prices unchanged till Eid

Express Tribune15-03-2025

The government has decided to maintain the prices of all petroleum products at their current levels for the next fortnight, starting March 16, 2025, according to a notification issued by the Finance Division.
The price of petrol will remain at Rs255.63 per litre, while high-speed diesel will be priced at Rs258.64 per litre. Additionally, kerosene will be available at Rs168.12 per litre, and light diesel will be priced at Rs153.34 per litre during the same period.
These prices will come into effect on March 16, 2025.
Earlier, reports suggested that the government might reduce the prices of petroleum products by up to Rs14.16 per litre, following a decrease in global oil prices and premiums, based on estimates from oil marketing companies (OMCs).
However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif opted to maintain the current prices, directing the full financial benefit to be transferred to the public through a reduction in electricity rates.
In a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, Shehbaz Sharif confirmed that the government would keep the prices of petroleum products unchanged, preparing to provide significant relief to the public by reducing electricity rates.
He added that the decision to maintain petroleum prices was part of a broader strategy to help consumers by making electricity more affordable.
Prime Minister Sharif revealed that a comprehensive plan to lower electricity rates was in the final stages of preparation, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.
He explained that the financial space created by fluctuations in global oil prices, combined with other measures, would allow the government to offer substantial relief through lower electricity prices.
The Premier reiterated his commitment to prioritizing public relief, stating that this initiative would not only reduce electricity prices but also have a positive effect on overall inflation, contributing to further price reductions.

KSE-100 crosses 126,000 as post-budget optimism drives buying spree

Buying rally continued at the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), as the benchmark KSE-100 Index crossed the 126,000 amid a gain of nearly 1,700 points during the intra-day trading on Thursday. At 11:25am, the benchmark index was hovering at 126,028.28 level, an increase of 1,675.60 points or 1.35%. Across the board buying was observed in key sectors including automobile assemblers, cement, commercial banks, oil and gas exploration, OMCs and refinery traded in the green. Addressing the post-budget conference, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Wednesday warned that additional revenue measures of up to Rs500 billion would be taken next fiscal year, if enabling amendments and legislation on enforcement were not passed by parliament, adding that all the budget figures were locked with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Aurangzeb presented the federal budget 2025-26 to the parliament on Tuesday, with a total outlay of Rs17.573 trillion, targeting a GDP growth rate of 4.2% against 2.7 per cent in the outgoing year. On Wednesday, the PSX extended its rally as key indices posted strong gains, fueled by robust investor participation and improved sentiment following the positive announcements in the federal budget. The benchmark KSE-100 Index rose by 2,328 points, or 1.91%, to close at 124,352.68 points, up from 122,024.44 points in the previous session. Internationally, global stocks and the dollar slipped on Thursday as investors assessed a benign U.S. inflation report and the fragile trade truce between Washington and Beijing, while rising tensions in the Middle East and lingering tariff anxiety dampened risk sentiment. Attention in financial markets this week has been focused on the US-China trade talks, which culminated in a framework agreement that would remove Chinese export restrictions on rare earth minerals and allow Chinese students to access US universities. MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was 0.3% lower in early trading after hitting a three-year high on Wednesday. Japan's Nikkei slipped 0.7%, while U.S. and European stock futures fell. China's blue-chip stock index fell 0.37%, moving off the near three-week top it touched in the previous session. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index was down 0.74%, also inching away from Wednesday's three-month high. Trump's erratic tariff policies have roiled global markets this year, prompting hordes of investors to exit US assets, especially the dollar, as they worried about rising prices and slowing economic growth.

Civil servants: Institutional restructuring, compensation packages discussed

ISLAMABAD: Under the chairmanship of Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, the 13th meeting of the Civil Service Reforms Committee was convened Wednesday. The meeting focused on key agenda items, including institutional restructuring and reviewing compensation packages for civil servants. Presentations were made by the Cabinet Division on institutional restructuring, while officers from the Finance Division and Economic Affairs Division (EAD) briefed the Minister on current situation and proposed recommendations to review financial compensation. Discussions centered around modernizing recruitment criteria to cater to the evolving needs of the civil service. The Minister emphasized the need for restructuring service in a way that allows officers to differentiate themselves based on performance rather than their initial service allocation. 'A strategy must be devised to enable top talent at senior level to compete for key positions on merit,' stated the Minister. Regarding financial compensation, an analysis presented by EAD and Finance Division officers highlighted the challenges faced by civil servants, including inadequate medical support, transportation, and accommodation. Key findings highlighted the unavailability of affordable housing and transportation in Islamabad as major deterrents for officers. Several recommendations were discussed at length and direction was given by Minister to incorporate the most viable recommendations into summary to be presented before the PM. The meeting participants were informed that the state bears a significant burden of Rs. 1.04 trillion annually for pension payments to two million officers. Finance Division representatives apprised the Minister that significant pension reforms have been introduced as part of the Budget 2025-26, aiming to rationalise public spending and reduce the growing fiscal burden posed by the existing pension system. The Minister stressed that pension should not be a 'dead investment' and suggested utilizing the skills of retired officers in various organizations. To address medical support issues, a summary prepared by the Ministry of National Health Services proposing health insurance as a viable alternative was discussed. The Minister directed relevant officials to conduct a comparative analysis of allowances drawn by civil servants in federal and provincial governments. Recommendations were made to make it mandatory for civil servants to serve in the federal government for a specific period to be eligible for promotion. The committee discussed various suggestions to address issues related to remuneration, accommodation, transport, and monetization. The Minister emphasized the need for administrative steps to attract officers to serve in the federal government, rather than relying solely on financial incentives. The meeting concluded with Minister's direction to compile a final report, incorporating all recommendations and findings, for discussion in the next meeting. Copyright Business Recorder, 2025
