3rd Green Youth Hackathon: Startup Challenge for Sustainable Innovation

Daily Tribune27-04-2025
The French Embassy to Bahrain, in partnership with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and AIESEC Bahrain, has officially launched the third edition of the Green Youth Hackathon. The event, running from April 24 to 28, 2025, will take place at the Bahrain Science Center for SDGs and HQHope at Seef Mall, gathering young innovators focused on creating sustainable solutions to environmental challenges.
This year's hackathon encourages participants to develop start-up ideas that address critical sustainability challenges aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With a special focus on SDG 14: Life Below Water, this edition will highlight marine and coastal issues in the lead-up to the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), scheduled for June 2025 in Nice, France.
Collaborative Support
Held with the support of leading French companies such as Fives Services Gulf and BNP Paribas, as well as Bahrain's Supreme Council for Environment, this event aims to equip young innovators with the skills and mentorship they need to develop real-world solutions.
The hackathon invites university students and recent graduates aged 18 to 30 to join forces in creating practical, scalable business solutions for Bahrain's marine and coastal challenges. Over the course of three days, seven selected teams will work alongside sustainability and entrepreneurship experts from both Bahrain and France to shape innovative ideas that can positively impact the environment.
Workshops and Mentorship
In addition to collaborative project development, participants will attend specialized workshops led by key partners, including the Supreme Council for Environment, Neia Solutions, the Bahrain-based NGO NUWAT, and Traction4Business. These workshops will cover essential topics such as sustainable entrepreneurship, marine biodiversity, the blue economy, and coastal development.
Throughout the hackathon, expert mentorship will be provided by environmental professionals and business leaders from BNP Paribas and AIESEC Bahrain, ensuring that each team receives guidance to refine their ideas into viable business models that can drive meaningful environmental change.
Prizes and Opportunities
The winning team of the Green Youth Hackathon 2025 will receive a BD500 prize, which will support the development and implementation of their start-up idea. Additionally, the team will gain access to the Mashra3ooi program by Tamkeen, which aids early-stage entrepreneurs in Bahrain.
Moreover, the winning team will also be invited to participate in a unique two-week hackathon in France, held alongside the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice. This international opportunity will help enhance youth employability and encourage cross-border skill transfer, providing participants with the chance to expand their professional networks while gaining hands-on experience.
By offering both local and international opportunities, the Green Youth Hackathon is empowering Bahrain's youth to take action on marine sustainability while also contributing to the global conversation on ocean conservation.

Ushering in good times

melissa@ Bahraini entrepreneur and horologist Mahmood Qannati has levelled up with two new global certifications, scaling greater heights in luxury watch-making. The founder of multidisciplinary niche luxury French Bahraini brand Qannati Objet d'Art has earned two internationally acclaimed certifications in the field of horology – the Watch Advisor certification from the Fondation Haute Horlogerie and the Train the Trainer certification from WOSTEP (Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Programme). Both milestones were achieved after a period of intensive training and assessment in Neuchâtel, Switzerland – the historic epicentre of fine Swiss watchmaking. The achievement is also part of a broader personal mission to become the first Arab watchmaker of his kind in the region, and signals the launch of a new phase in the development of the horological division of Qannati Objet d'Art, celebrated for its handcrafted objets d'art that 'fuse storytelling, sacred geometry, and ancestral craftsmanship'. The certifications further cement Mahmood's commitment to elevating the culture of horology and métiers d'art in the region, reinforcing the Maison's distinctive identity at the intersection of Arab heritage, French artistry, and Swiss horological excellence. As part of this next phase, Mahmood aims to establish educational foundations for horology and métiers d'art across the region. He aims to start with programmes at institutions like Bahrain Polytechnic. He also hopes to develop the Qannati Lab into a regional centre for high-end watchmaking, miniature sculpture, and ancestral crafts – ensuring these rare disciplines are preserved and passed on. Qannati Lab further aims to support the emerging watchmaking and jewellery sectors in the Arab world by training a new generation of artisans and positioning Bahrain as a regional hub of excellence. Mahmood's journey reflects a commitment to reviving ancient know-how, promoting the art of timekeeping in the Gulf, and solidifying Qannati Objet d'Art's status as a brand devoted to the art of horology.

Portugal's Felix joins Ronaldo at Al Nassr in Saudi

AFP | Jeddah Portuguese forward Joao Felix has signed a twoyear deal with Saudi Arabia's Al Nassr, where he will join Cristiano Ronaldo, the club announced yesterday. Felix, now 25, made a blockbuster move from Benfica to Atletico Madrid in 2019, but has since seen his fortunes decline. 'I'm here to spread joy. Let's win together,' said Felix in a video posted on the Riyadh club's X account. A separate post said he had signed until 2027. Felix remains one of the most expensive transfers in history, following his move to Atletico for 127.7 million euros ($147.3 million) six years ago. He has since failed to score more than 10 goals a season, despite stints at Barcelona, AC Milan and Chelsea. According to Arryadia, a Riyadh sports newspaper, Felix will earn $10 million a year. Saudi Arabia has shaken up football by spending heavily on stars from Europe, starting with Ronaldo's arrival in 2023, and the nation will host the World Cup in 2034. Many of the signings have been ageing stars, but Felix bucks the trend along with Mateo Retegui, 26, the Serie A top-scorer who joined Al Qadsiah last week. French international Theo Hernandez, 27, left AC Milan for Al Hilal in a reported $29 million deal earlier this month. Top coaches have also been lured to Saudi Arabia, including Italy's Simone Inzaghi who led Al Hilal to an upset win over Manchester City at the Club World Cup.

French PM Criticizes US-EU Trade Deal, Calls It a "Dark Day"

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou has strongly criticized a recent trade agreement between the United States and the European Union, describing it as a "dark day" and a sign of "submission." In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, Bayrou expressed disappointment over the deal, which was reached on Sunday between US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The agreement sets a baseline tariff of 15 percent on EU exports to the United States. "It is a dark day when an alliance of free peoples, united to affirm their values and defend their interests, resorts to submission," Bayrou wrote, reflecting deep concern over what he sees as an unequal compromise that may hurt European producers. The deal has sparked debate in Europe, with critics saying the agreement could weaken the EU's economic standing and benefit the US disproportionately.
