Kagiso Rabada Urges Proteas Against Riding WTC High Too Long, Avoiding Pakistan's 2017 Win Like Complacency

South Africa's pace spearhead Kagiso Rabada believes it's time for the Proteas to shift their focus from the emotional high of their World Test Championship (WTC) final triumph over Australia, as the two sides prepare for a six-match white-ball series starting this Sunday in Darwin. Speaking to the media on Thursday, Rabada acknowledged the importance of the WTC victory but emphasized the need to look ahead to the upcoming T20Is and ODIs. 'I think it was special, and I've done so many interviews on that since,' Rabada said. 'I think it's time to move on. I don't think we'll ever forget that as a team, and South Africa won't either. But time to move on now.'
The WTC final in June was a historic milestone for South African cricket, ending a 26-year wait for an ICC trophy. At Lord's, Rabada delivered a match-winning performance, finishing with figures of 9 for 110, while Aiden Markram played a pivotal role in the fourth innings with a composed 136 to guide South Africa to victory.
Reflecting on the emotional weight of that moment, Rabada said, 'It was kind of like a relief. But the show moves on, and moving toward the T20 World Cup, I guess the approach will be a bit different. Now, you know, there's no fear of anything.'
The white-ball series in Australia, which features three T20 internationals and three ODIs, marks Rabada's return to competitive cricket since the WTC final. The 30-year-old used the time off to rest and recover from a demanding schedule. 'Thankfully, I've had quite a long break, so that's been awesome,' he noted. 'Maintenance work consistently has to be done because the volume of cricket is quite a bit.'
Looking ahead to the clash with Australia, Rabada is anticipating another intense battle. The South Africa-Australia rivalry has been one of the fiercest in modern cricket, and Rabada welcomes the competitive edge. 'It's always some hard cricket being played, some good cricket,' he said. 'Whenever we play Australia, I always feel like they get the best out of us, because they're sort of in our faces. And I guess we like that.'
With the T20 World Cup set for 2026 and a wave of young talent coming through the ranks, Rabada expressed optimism about the team's direction. 'It's just about trying to see where we're at as a team, moving into almost like another generation,' he added.

Yuvraj Singh pens a long note hailing Mohammed Siraj and Shubman Gill's 'calm captaincy' after India's big win against England

On August 4, 2025, the Indian cricket team created history by securing a big win against England at the Oval. Several big personalities showered love on the Indian team and applauded their comeback. Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh also wished the team and shared a long note on his Instagram wall. Yuvraj Singh posted a series of pictures from the field and captioned it with, "This is what self-belief looks like. The boys have delivered one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent Test cricket, fighting back with a historic win at The Oval." The cricketer further applauded the efforts of Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh, Akash Deep, and the Captain of the ship, Shubman Gill, who collectively scripted history on the field. He wrote, "@mohammedsirajofficial rose to the occasion with a brilliant five-wicket haul. #prasidh held his nerve at the most critical moments. @ displayed composure far beyond his experience. And together, they defended 35 runs with four wickets left on a pitch offering very little. Special mention for @shubmangill who led from the front and also proved his mettle as player of the series in his first as captain!" The legendary cricketer concluded his post by saying, "This is a victory built on resilience, trust, and the hunger to finish strong. The boys retain the trophy, but more importantly, they walk away with the respect of the cricketing world. Congratulations to the entire team and coach @gautamgambhir55! @indiancricketteam". Siraj and Prasidh bag career-best rankings, Shubman Gill out of Top 10 Mohammad Siraj jumped to his career-best ranking after his five-wicket haul in the latest Anderson-Tendulkar series. The fast-bowler took the 15th position in the ICC Test Ranking, by jumping over 12 spots. His previous best ICC Test ranking was 16th. He was adjudged 'Player of the Match' following his remarkable performance at Kennington Oval Stadium. Prasidh Krishna also secured his career-best ranking at 59th position, while Shubhman Gill dropped out of the Top 10 ranking. Though Gill turned the Player of the Series following his record-breaking batting performance, he dropped by four spots to stand at 13th position in the latest ICC ranking. This comes as a result of his 32 runs only in the final Test. Stay tuned to Pinkvilla for more updates. ALSO READ: Dhanashree Verma asked Yuzvendra Chahal for Rs 60 crore alimony? Mohammed Shami was ‘not confident' after BCCI reached out to him; clock ticking for India pacer to save Test career

There was sudden buzz around Mohammed Shami's potential return to the Indian Test fold for the series against England after the fast bowler was seen practising with a special ball, red on one side and white on the other, in the Sunrisers Hyderabad nets. But it all subsided when he was not considered for a spot in the side, sparking questions about his future in the Indian team. Mohammed Shami was not picked for the Test series against England(BCCI Twitter) Shami has not played Test cricket since the World Test Championship final against Australia in 2023. He returned to competitive cricket in October last year after being out of action for months due to injury. Although he featured in domestic red-ball matches, he failed to prove his fitness and was omitted from the tour of Australia. According to The Telegraph, a BCCI official revealed that the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee recognised Shami's experience as crucial for the England series, especially with Jasprit Bumrah expected to play only three of the five Tests owing to workload management. However, the 35-year-old did not sound confident about his fitness, leaving the selectors sceptical, and was therefore not picked. 'First of all, he wasn't dropped because of form. Fitness issues are the only reason why he couldn't travel to England,' the BCCI official said. 'After missing the last tour of Australia, his presence was much needed for the England series. The selectors had also spoken to him before finalising the squad, but he didn't sound too confident. That much-needed assurance from him was missing.' The official further pointed out that age was not on Shami's side, and the preference would be for a fast bowler 'who still has seven to eight years of cricket left in him rather than someone who'll be turning 35 soon.' Shami faces the ticking clock The report stated that Shami is set to play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy, beginning August 28. This will allow the selectors to reassess his fitness and form ahead of India's home series against the West Indies in October. East Zone will open their campaign against North Zone in the quarter-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence ground in Bengaluru. 'In all probability, Shami will be playing the first game. He's busy with his preparation at his academy back home (in Amroha). He's getting ready,' a source close to the pacer said. A BCCI insider added: 'If Shami produces an impact-making performance against North Zone, the selectors will certainly take notice because his quality cannot be ruled out. But the question is whether he'll continue playing if East Zone advance beyond the quarter-finals. Will his body permit, given his dodgy knee and hamstring? In the Ranji Trophy, he used to bowl three-four overs in a spell and then go off the ground. So whether his body can take the rigours of a multi-day game remains a tricky question.' An impressive Duleep Trophy campaign could hand Shami a shot at redemption in the West Indies series. However, the selectors are keeping a close eye on younger fast-bowling options, making this potentially a decisive moment in the veteran's Test career.
