Anvar continues tirade against Satheesan
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) State convener P.V. Anvar continued his tirade against United Democratic Front (UDF) chairman V.D. Satheesan on Thursday (June 5), reiterating that the UDF would not win the Nilambur byelection as long as Mr. Satheesan remained at the helm.
He said 'two Pinarayi Vijayans' were facing the election in Nilambur. 'Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate M. Swaraj is the spokesperson of Pinarayism, and the UDF candidate is a supporter of Pinarayism,' he added.
Mr. Anvar credited himself with highlighting the problems and sufferings of the settler farmer communities living in the hills of Kerala, particularly Nilambur.
Anvar claimed he was convinced by the people of Nilambur to enter the fray. 'Unlike transient politicians, I will stay with the ordinary people of Nilambur. That is why they want me by their side,' he said.

Veteran Kerala Cong leader, three-time RS MP dies at 95
Thennala Balakrishna Pillai, a three-time Rajya Sabha MP and a veteran Congress leader who led the party to its most successful Assembly election in 2001 in Kerala, passed away on Friday at a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was 95. Pillai, the gentle face of the Congress in the state and a two-time state president, succumbed to age-related illnesses. Pillai always advocated for consensus-building within the party and led the organisation through one of its most turbulent periods when it was divided into two factions led by K Karunakaran and AK Antony. Despite the intense strife, it speaks to his calibre as a leader who was acceptable to all that the Congress-led UDF was voted to power in the state in 2001 with its highest-ever tally of 100 out of 140 seats. Born in Sooranad in Kollam district in 1930, Pillai began his career in the Congress as a local ward committee president. He headed the Kollam district Congress committee for more than five years and was elected to the Assembly twice from Adoor in 1977 and 1982. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha thrice, 1991, 1992 and 2003. Governor Rajendra Arlekar condoled his demise and said Pillai led an unblemished political career within the Congress. CM Pinarayi Vijayan called Pillai a 'well-respected and gentlemanly politician.' 'He led a political life that saw periods of having power and lacking power equally,' said the CM. Leader of the Opposition VD Satheesan said Pillai was among the few leaders who was acceptable to all factions. 'We remember with fondness and love the advice he gave to all of us which have strengthened our political ideals. He was like the grandfather in the family to whom we can approach with any grievance,' said Satheesan.

Nilambur bypoll: Anvar seeks donations for campaign fund
Kozhikode: Former Nilambur MLA and independent candidate PV Anvar, who has declared assets worth Rs 52 crore in his election affidavit, launched a crowd funding campaign seeking donations from voters of Nilambur saying that he was facing a financial crisis. In a Facebook video posted on Friday, Anvar said that despite owning property worth crores, he was unable to sell even a cent as all his assets were entangled in an "excess land" case. "I have not done any election preparation due to the financial crunch. I am now launching a crowdfunding initiative and urge everyone to contribute, even Rs 1 or Rs 10 as a token of moral support," he said, adding that donor details would be kept confidential. Meanwhile, Left councillor in Nilambur municipality and JDS national council member Ismail Eranjikkal joined the All India Trinamool Congress, extending support to independent candidate PV Anvar. He said that Anvar was the only candidate who was raising the genuine issues of the people of the constituency. Ismail said that he was leaving the JDS as the party was in alliance with BJP at the national level while it was part of the LDF in the state with power minister K Krishnankutty representing the party in the cabinet. "No Official Version": Kerala Government On Bharat Mata Portrait
Thiruvananthapuram: The Left government in Kerala on Friday made it clear that it was not in agreement with the use of the Bharat Mata portrait at the Environment Day event at the Raj Bhavan here as the picture was not authorised as the official version by the Constitution or the Indian government. Kerala Agriculture Minister P Prasad, who boycotted the event at the Raj Bhavan a day ago over the use of the portrait, said that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events. A similar view was also expressed by state General Education Minister V Sivankutty who said that the Raj Bhavan and the Governor were above politics and said that Arlekar should withdraw from the stand taken by him. The government's stand came a day after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar asserted that there would be no compromise on Bharat Mata. Mr Prasad, while talking to a TV channel, said that no Bharat Mata portrait has ever been acknowledged as the official or authorised version by the Constitution or any of the governments in power since independence. He further said that the portrait about to be used at the event was not carrying the Indian flag, but that of a political organisation, and therefore, it could not be honoured during a government event. The minister said that the particular political organisation and the Governor were free to pay homage to the portrait at private events, but it cannot be done in state government programmes. "We all have a political view, but those in constitutional positions have restrictions on how they express it," he added. He said that the government view was that such a stand ought not to have been taken by a constitutional establishment and expressed hope that it will be corrected by the concerned persons. "It actually should not be repeated in our country. We cannot accept it in Kerala," he added. The minister also questioned why the Governor was "rigid" on the issue, when none of the earlier Governors in the state and not even the Presidents of the country have carried out such a practice in the past. For the World Environment Day event, the Raj Bhavan came out with a minute-to-minute programme, but it initially did not have anything about paying floral tributes to the portrait of Bharat Mata, he said. On eve of the programme, a new schedule was sent to us and it included the paying of floral tribute to Bharat Mata portrait. "So, I enquired with the Raj Bhavan about the floral tributes and asked them to send me a picture of the portrait. The portrait was the one used by the RSS and was not recognised or authorised as an official version, I informed the Raj Bhavan that we cannot offer floral tributes to it," he said. The minister said that the Raj Bhavan in response said they cannot remove the portrait. On being told that the opposition was criticising the lack of response on the issue by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Mr Prasad said that the Congress-led UDF was trying to gain political mileage out of it especially in view of the upcoming bypoll in Nilambur assembly constituency. After knowing Raj Bhavan's stand, the state government relocated the event to the Secretariat's Durbar Hall and the Raj Bhavan went ahead with its programme. Later, in a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor said, "Whatever be the pressure, from whichever quarters, there will be no compromise whatsoever on Bharat Mata." In his speech at the Raj Bhavan programme, the Governor said two ministers--state Education Minister and Agriculture Minister--had agreed to attend the function but they did not turn up for the event. While Sangh outfit Bharatiya Vichara Kendram strongly backed the Governor, the ruling CPI(M) and the Congress criticised the Raj Bhavan on the matter.
