Lions sign veteran offensive tackle, waive Raequan Williams
The Lions have made their first roster move following the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. Detroit has signed veteran offensive lineman Justin Herron and released defensive lineman Raequan Williams. Herron, 29, has been around the NFL since 2020, when he was a sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots. He played collegiately at Wake Forest and quickly took over the starting left tackle role in New England as a rookie, but has started just four games in the subsequent four seasons. Herron missed the 2024 season with an injury while a member of the New Orleans Saints. He's also played for the Raiders. Williams had signed with the Lions this spring after a successful tryout at the rookie minicamp. The former Michigan State tackle had not progressed up the depth chart in his quest to get back into the NFL. Per team sources, Herron will take over Williams' No. 76 on the roster. The move comes in the wake of Dan Skipper suffering a sprained left ankle in the exhibition opener. Skipper will miss some practice time. Starting left tackle Taylor Decker is starting positional drills in Sunday's practice. Exciting' Dijksteel arrives early at St Mirren
St Mirren have paid an undisclosed fee to bring "exciting" 24-year-old winger Malik Dijksteel to Paisley six months early from Cork City. The Scottish Premiership club announced last week the Dutchman had signed a pre-contract agreement to join them when his deal with the League of Ireland club was due to expire in January. Cork manager Gerard Nash then claimed after Friday's League of Ireland Premier Division defeat by Sligo Rovers that Dijksteel's agent had made the winger unavailable for the game after St Mirren's approach had been rebuffed. Saints manager Stephen Robinson had denied any knowledge of that, but is now pleased to "add another bit of creativity and pace into the team" on a contract until summer 2028. Robinson, though, stressed that "there's no guarantees" and Dijksteel would have to "fight to get into the team" who qualified from their Premier Sports Cup group. However, he pointed out that: "He comes match ready because he's been playing at Cork as well the last three games." Once a youth with Feyenoord, Dijksteel joined defender brother Anfernee at Middlesbroough before moving to Whitby Town and Wrexham before signing for Cork in 2023. He has made 11 appearances this season, scoring once, but is "delighted" to be able to join St Mirren earlier than planned for a full season. "It allows me to get to know the manager and get to know how he works," he told St Mirren's website. "The manager said he wants me to be me and be the player that I am. He wants me to beat players, excite the fans and work hard. That's what you want to hear as a winger. "I've watched some of the games on TV. You don't know until you're in it yourself, but it looks like a good level and I'm looking forward to it." Sunday's reports claim that Neom SC of the Saudi Pro League could be set to rival Championship side Ipswich Town for the signing of Napoli midfielder Jens Cajuste, who is expected to leave the Stadio Maradona this summer. According to Sunday's report, Neom are prepared to offer a fee of €2.5m to sign Cajuste on loan for the season with an option to buy clause for a further €8m. Neom would also be prepared to pay a penalty fee of an additional €2.5m in the event that they do not activate their buy option.
