Mutiara Line LRT physical works to begin in a month or two, says Loke
GEORGE TOWN: Physical works for the Mutiara Line light rail transit (LRT) project are expected to begin in a month or two. Transport Minister Anthony Loke said it would start with piling works. He said all necessary notices, including the Notice to Proceed with the project, had been issued to the relevant parties. "Penang does not need to wait anymore… everything is done. "All issues related to the Penang LRT project, between the federal government — particularly the ministry — and the state government, have been resolved properly. "I held a meeting with the Chief Minister (Chow Kon Yeow) at the ministry last month. All outstanding matters, including letters of release from the state government and other documents, have been settled," he said when met at the Rapid Penang headquarters in Lorong Kulit this afternoon. Elaborating further, Loke said even the main contractor had already awarded packages to subcontractors. "So, construction work will begin soon — in the next one or two months. We will start seeing physical works. "This includes preparatory works such as piling. We have also requested that, once piling and construction works begin, there must be a proper traffic diversion plan in place to avoid major disruptions, especially since traffic is already a challenge in Penang. "As with any construction project, there will be some diversions and an impact on road users. What we need to do is minimise that impact," he added. It was recently reported that Econpile Holdings Bhd's wholly-owned subsidiary, Econpile (M) Sdn Bhd, had secured a RM42.82 million contract from Irama Duta Sdn Bhd to carry out bored piling and related construction works as part of the LRT project.

After 46-day cyberattack pause, M&S resumes online orders
LONDON: British retailer Marks & Spencer resumed taking online orders for clothing lines on Tuesday after a 46-day hiatus following a cyberattack. Shares in M&S, one of the best-known names in British business, were up 3% after it restarted standard home delivery in England, Scotland and Wales for the majority of its clothing range. "It's not the full range at the moment, we've focused on best sellers and newness," an M&S spokesperson said. "We'll be bringing product online everyday so customers will see that grow over the coming days." M&S said delivery to Northern Ireland will resume in the "coming weeks", as will click and collect services, next-day delivery, nominated-day delivery and international ordering. The 141-year-old M&S stopped taking clothing and home orders through its website and app on April 25 following problems with contactless pay and click and collect services over the Easter holiday weekend. It first disclosed it had been managing a "cyber incident" on April 22. M&S said last month it expected online disruption to continue into July and forecast the attack would cost it about 300 million pounds ($404 million) in lost operating profit in its 2025/26 financial year, though it hopes to halve the impact through insurance and cost control. The group said hackers broke into its systems by tricking employees at a third-party contractor, skirting its digital defences to launch a cyberattack. - Reuters

Top Indian dealmakers earn more than Singapore, HK peers
Foreign lenders such as Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ are continuing to expand in India. (EPA Images pic) SINGAPORE : Senior dealmakers in India are earning more than their counterparts in Singapore and Hong Kong, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, as global firms boost pay to attract top talent in the world's fastest-growing major economy. Heads and directors at investment banks in the South Asian nation's major financial hubs, such as Mumbai and free trade zone GIFT city, are paid 24% more than their peers in Hong Kong and 37% higher than in Singapore, according to Bloomberg Intelligence's analysis of a survey by recruiter Michael Page. For the year, India's bankers are set for pay rises of more than 9%, compared to 4%-5% in the two Asian cities, Bloomberg Intelligence senior analyst Sarah Jane Mahmud wrote in a note today. The report cited survey data from consulting firm Aon. India is seeing a boost from a rebound in investments even as global trade uncertainties weigh on the country's broader outlook. Foreign lenders such as Japan's Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc are continuing to expand in the South Asian nation, while Julius Baer Group Ltd is seeking to triple the wealth assets it manages, the Bloomberg Intelligence report said. Investors have refocused on India's lower relative exposure to the US during the recent turbulence in global trade policy. M&A volumes have picked up and dealmakers say the country is well positioned to lure more overseas capital from private equity and sovereign wealth funds. While India has higher income tax rates than Singapore and Hong Kong, its lower cost of living may be a draw, according to the report. Pay for wealth managers in India, however, continued to lag behind that of Hong Kong and Singapore by 47%-58%, only a slight improvement from last year, the report showed.
