AFLW: West Coast Eagles set to welcome back co-captain Bella Lewis for round one clash with Gold Coast Suns

West Coast are planning for new co-captain and midfield star Bella Lewis to play in their blockbuster AFLW season-opener against Gold Coast on Thursday night.
Lewis has not featured in either of the Eagles' pre-season practice matches this season as the club manages her recovery from a pre-season injury niggle.
The Eagles drew with Western Bulldogs on Saturday night at Mineral Resources Park in their final official practice match after a match simulation defeat to Fremantle the week before.
Daisy Pearce's side play on the opening night of the season against the Suns at Leederville Oval.
Lewis' co-captain Charlie Thomas expects her to be there.
'That's the plan, she will be back for round one which is great,' Thomas told The West Australian.
'Obviously we just wanted to give her every chance possible to be ready for round one and it's looking very positive at the moment, so that's really good.'
Thomas has played both of the club's practice matches as a sole captain, while young gun Ella Roberts returned for the hit-out against the Bulldogs.
The new skipper said the team that drew at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday felt closer to a full-strength side.
'It will be good to have a couple of girls back in, but the people that were able to show their talent at the weekend and in the Freo praccy as well, all of the new girls got a gig so it was awesome to see them unleash their talent,' Thomas said.
'I think they did a really, really great job. We're only going to get better from here.'
The Eagles' clash with the Suns comes immediately after the season-opening match between Carlton and Collingwood. That game is a throwback to the league's first match as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.
Thomas said she hoped fans flocked to Leederville Oval to celebrate, even though the match starts at 7.15pm on a school night.
'It's super exciting, Thursday night footy will be really good. It's a school night, so hopefully parents bring down their kids,' she joked.
'Second game of the season, which is pretty cool. To play Gold Coast and even more so at home, it's super special.'

Jeremy McGovern and Dom Sheed reflect on 2018 grand final- winning play ahead of West Coast Eagles tribute

Jeremy McGovern and Dom Sheed have reflected on their iconic 2018 grand final-winning play, as West Coast prepare to honour the retired premiership pair. But McGovern and Sheed, who both hung up the boots earlier this season, hope they will be remembered for much more than one moment across their combined 362 games in blue and gold. McGovern took a crucial intercept mark to start the chain that led to Sheed's famous goal in the decider against Collingwood at the MCG but insists it was just 'part of the game'. 'The game is much bigger than that play for myself anyway,' McGovern told 7NEWS. 'When you really reflect on it, don't get me wrong, it's great to be a part of it, and it's spoken about a bit ... but it's more the grand final, the premiership, because that's what you play footy for. 'Ultimately it's a group of boys that you're doing it with and with the club and the fans. So the player gets brought up a lot but the thought for me is more around the whole celebration and what the club did as a whole. 'That was very special, very grateful to be a part of one.' The Eagles this week painted the turf on the second oval at their Mineral Resources Park training base in Lathlain to replicate the play. Blue dots and a yellow line are used to signify each part of the play. McGovern took an intercept mark inside the Eagles' defensive 50 before kicking down the line to ruckman Nathan Vardy. He then passed to Liam Ryan who flew to take a mark, then hit Sheed, who kicked the winning goal. West Coast players also warmed up for training in shirts with 'The Golden Thread' emblazoned across them. McGovern and Sheed will be formally farewelled at half-time of the club's clash with ladder-leaders Adelaide at Optus Stadium on Sunday. Sheed admits he will miss running out in front of the Eagles faithful and is thrilled to get the chance to say goodbye to the club's loyal supporter base. 'The fans have been there the whole way through,' the 30-year-old said. 'And we've had a couple of rough years at the footy club but they keep coming week-in, week-out so we owe it to them. 'That's one thing I'm probably going to miss most, is running out in front of 50,000 West Coast fans, so it'll be nice to do it once more. 'To get out there and say thanks to them for all their support and hopefully they can just keep continuing to support the footy club.' McGovern, 33, was medically retired by the AFL's concussion panel in June less than a year after his maiden club champion award, while Sheed called time on his career later that month after being sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament injury in what became his final season. Both McGovern, who played 197 games for the Eagles, and Sheed, who played 165 games, are life members of the club.

West Coast Eagles bring back Matt Flynn and Sandy Brock as Adelaide rest veteran star

West Coast have recalled ruckman Matt Flynn after just one game in the reserves as ladder-leaders Adelaide have once again rested veteran Taylor Walker. The Eagles are to make at least three changes for their clash at Optus Stadium on Sunday, with Flynn, midfielder Jack Graham and defender Sandy Brock named in the starting 18 for the clash against the Crows. Defender Harry Edwards will miss with a foot injury, while exciting young Eagle Tyrell Dewar has been omitted after playing 15 games this season. Graham returns for his first game after being suspended for four games for a homophobic slur last month, having been named on the wing. Brock is set to once again take on Crows forward Darcy Fogarty who he kept to one goal in their previous encounter this year. Out-of-contract speedster Jack Petruccelle and forward Jack Williams have been named on an extended bench alongside Tyler Brockman, Ryan Maric, Tom Gross, Clay Hall, Bailey Williams and Hamish Davis. Flynn was dropped after the Eagles' derby defeat, missing the match-up against Melbourne captain and seven-time All-Australian Max Gawn at the weekend. The 27-year-old responded with 24 disposals, 30 hit-outs and five clearances for the Eagles' WAFL side in their 69-point defeat to East Perth at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Saturday. Williams' selection comes despite the 21-year-old not kicking a goal from a total of 13 touches in his past two WAFL games. Dewar got the axe after he was subbed out of the 83-point loss to the Demons with only five touches. The Crows will leave 35-year-old Walker at home, with the former captain having missed their round 11 encounter. He is now set to play his 300th game in the Crows' first final. Brayden Cook and Brodie Smith have both been dropped with veteran Rory Laird as well as Chris Burgess, Harry Schoenberg, James Borlase, Lachlan Murphy and Luke Pedlar all named as potential inclusions. ‘Broken promise': Fans hit out at AFL over another broadcast snub

When the AFL trumpeted Thursday night football as the centrepiece of its new and approved 2025 broadcasting deal, it would not have had an eye on the weather. But as the season hurtles towards the finish line, the league has been accused of breaking a promise to fans as it deals with a Cyclone Alfred-altered draw. At the heart of the troubles has been how to reschedule the postponed match between Gold Coast and Essendon – the round zero match that was called off on March 8 as the tropical cyclone made landfall. But wearing the brunt of the fallout are Essendon and Carlton fans. Loading The AFL released its final round fixture this week. It would start with Essendon and Carlton on a Thursday night and finish with the cyclone match between Gold Coast and Essendon the following Wednesday. Fans were shocked when Channel 7 announced it would be changing its broadcast approach. The network would ignore coverage of the final Thursday night match of the home-and-away season because of the poor run of form of the once mighty clubs. 'When they took away Saturday – I can tell you how fans feel about free-to-air not being on Saturday – the fans were very, very upset about it,' AFL fans association president Ron Issko told this masthead. 'And the AFL's response was, 'well you've got Thursday night, so it all balances out in the wash'. Well, actually, it doesn't. Because they are taking away Thursday night now. So fans would be very annoyed.'
