Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil by V. E. Schwab (Tor £22, 544pp)
Even as they take blood, vampires are the gift that still keep on giving to the genre of dark romance. Now V. E. Schwab's foray into this fertile world has borne ripe and juicy fruit.
Her new book is imbued with love, lust and yearning – mostly of the sapphic variety – and her take on hidden desires, hunger and corruption puts it up there with the classics of the genre.
From 16th-century Spain to 21st-century America via Venice and London, the plotlines are languorously long, yet strong as sinew and soused in buckets of gore.
Three women, three lives and three living deaths – sink your teeth into it and drink deep.
Kill Them with Kindness by Will Carver (Orenda Books £9.99, 300pp)
It starts with a knockabout dystopian premise: suppose the leaders of the western world decided to consolidate their power by releasing a deadly virus? Then suppose that the immunologist behind it all went rogue and found a bug that made people nice.
Overnight, carnivorous chefs would go vegan, tech bros develop a conscience and the world would be transformed by little acts of kindness.
Suffice to say, no one would put up with that, either.
Carver delights in grimly plausible overlaps with our recent history. It's clever, compelling, funny and it really makes you think: could it yet happen? Or did it happen already?
Esperance is available now from the Mail Bookshop
Esperance by Adam Oyebanji (Arcadia £10.99, 432pp)
Not many books feature time-travelling humanoids that talk like actor George Raft at his most gangsterish.
There's humour here and also good, solid plotting – key characteristics of this clever, intricate, hugely enjoyable story that still packs a real punch.
People are being drowned with seawater – mysteriously and ruthlessly – in inner-city apartments and grand country mansions alike.
After the murderers are a pair of straight-talking cops, a glamorous Amazonian Nigerian with mysterious tech and a charming Bristolian drifter.
Linking them is the Esperance, a 19th-century British sailing ship, whose historical business is very much the point of it all and will keep you gripped and leave you furious.

How to save money at Lidl Lidl reduced the price of items at the start of the day, so the best deals tend to be found at opening times between 7am and 8am. The supermarket often reduces its cooked meats, salmon fillets and breads by 30% or more. Lidl also has its own knock-offs of branded alcohol offering some bargain prices. There are also some great homeware and clothing bargains to be found in Lidl's middle aisle. For example, this nifty £7.99 BBQ tool can help you make crispy pizzas from home. If you want to avoid spending more than you planned, you can check what will be in the "Middle of Lidl" on the supermarket's website in advance, which is updated every Thursday and Sunday. It's also worth checking the "Pick of the Week" section on Lidl's website for food discounts. Why do Aldi and Lidl have such fast checkouts IF you've ever shopped in Aldi or Lidl then you'll probably have experienced its ultra-fast checkout staff. Aldi's speedy reputation is no mistake, in fact, the supermarket claims that its tills are 40 per cent quicker than rivals. It's all part of Aldi's plan to be as efficient as possible - and this, the budget shop claims, helps keep costs low for shoppers. Efficient barcodes on packaging means staff are able to scan items as quickly as possible, with the majority of products having multiple barcodes to speed up the process. It also uses 'shelf-ready' packaging which keeps costs low when it comes to replenishing stock.

Natalya Wright showcases her jaw-dropping figure in beige bikini as she soaks up the sun on holiday in Spain
Natalya Wright put on a racy display as she shared a fashionable 'get ready with me' to Instagram while on holiday in Spain on Friday. The younger sister of Mark Wright, 24, was enjoying another day by the pool and began the video in a beige bikini from Bonde-eye Swim that she praised for being 'stretchy'. Wearing her hair down in mermaid-like waves, she accessorised the bikini with a shell necklace. She then slipped into a silky two-piece co-ord set from Couture Club that was a perfect match with the bikini. The influencer explained that her sunscreen of choice is from Lancaster Beauty, describing it as 'a dream' which is very easily applied. The look was finished with a fedora hag from Lack of Colour and a large beach bag and sarong to ensure Natalya got the most out of her day by the pool. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. This is not the only insight Natalya has given into her ongoing holiday. She also set pulses racing with snaps of herself in another skimpy bikini, documenting her preparations for her first pool day on June 4. Natalya joined her family, including her brother Mark, his wife Michelle Keegan and their baby daughter Palma at the luxurious SO/ Sotogrande Spa & Golf Resort Hotel. The clip showed the influencer preparing herself for a day of sunbathing in the two-piece by Monday Swimwear, before covering up in a black crochet cover-up. Natalya also shared a rare glimpse of her baby niece Palma, as the tot enjoyed her first holiday abroad. The cute image showed the social media star cradling little Palma, with the caption: 'P's first holibobs.' Michelle and Mark have been enjoying their time as parents and have been sharing small glimpses of Palma on their social media accounts. It's believed the couple chose the name Palma because of their strong links to Mallorca, which has been their go-to holiday destination for years and the setting for their pregnancy reveal photoshoot. The look was finished with a fedora hag from Lack of Colour and a large beach bag and sarong to ensure Natalya got the most out of her day by the pool The clip showed the influencer preparing herself for a day of sunbathing in the two-piece by Monday Swimwear, before covering up in a black crochet cover-up Michelle married Mark in May 2015 and the couple live together in a £3.5 million Essex mansion they built from scratch. Chatting with his best friend and fellow dad Olly Murs on his Heart Breakfast show, TOWIE star Mark recalled the moment he first held his newborn daughter in his arms. Mark fought back emotions as he said: 'Mate, it's actually hard to put into words. 'It's the biggest achievement of my life it's all I think about but obviously, hats go off to my wife she is an absolute superhuman, a superhero for bringing this baby into the world.' Sharing his appreciation for Michelle, he added: 'It makes you realise what our mums did for us and makes me have so much more respect than I already had and what women had to go through. 'It's the best feeling in the world. I wake up every morning just so excited to see her face.'

Love Island rocked by THREE bombshell girls - as they crash boys' night in never-before-seen hidden camera twist
Love Island is set to be rocked by three bombshell girls - as they crash boys' night in a never-before-seen hidden camera twist. The ITV2 dating show, presented by Maya Jama, returned for a twelfth series earlier this week and has already seen one dumping. After just 24 hours in the villa, located in Mallorca, motivational speaker and author Sophie Lee, 29, was booted off the show. The Island has also been hit with three bombshells so far - waitress Toni Laites, 24, content creator Remell Mullins, 24, and scaffolder Shea Mannings, 25. And in tonight's episode, a whopping three bombshell girls will hit the villa while the lads hang out for boys' night - with the existing ladies watching on a secret camera to see how they react. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. As day dawns in the villa, Harry gets a text: 'Boys, clear your schedules and get ready to leave the villa! #brotime #beersandbants.' The lads are ecstatic, excited for the boys' night ahead - but the evening is not without fun for the girls either. Walking into the garden, they are stunned to see a massive screen. For the first time in worldwide Love Island history, the girls can watch exactly what the boys get up to as it happens - and the lads have no idea. As they gradually work out the nature of the set-up, seeing and hearing the boys talking on the enormous screen, an astonished Meg says: 'F*** off!' Alima adds: 'We'll get to see how they act!' What they discover does not exactly leave them best pleased, as the boys talk openly about their current matches. And what's worse is the lads' hangout is soon interrupted by three brand new bombshell girls - Emily, Malisha and Yasmin. Megan shouts, 'There's three of them!', as Harry, on-screen, asks the newbies: 'Are you coming back with us?' Malisha replies: 'Of course I am!' The new ladies waste no time getting to know the boys, with Yasmin saying: 'Tell us what your situation is in the villa at the moment.' And with the lads blissfully ignorant of the fact they are being watched, they do not hold back with their answers. Malisha, 24, a teaching assistant from Broxbourne, Hertfordshire, has a very clear idea of the kind of guy she is looking for: 'A tall, dark, handsome man. 'He has to be very tall. I'm 5ft7/5ft8. I want to be able to wear heels and feel feminine. 'He has to be funny, but not too funny; I have to be the funniest. 'I want someone that's caring and a bit loving, but then I like someone that can give me a bit of rude banter. I like to be a bit cheeky. 'I like nice teeth. Someone who's calm, but not too nonchalant. Someone that's really loving and is all about me. 'They need to know what they want. I like a determined man who is like, "I want you and I'm coming for you".' And she is put off by 'bad hygiene and snoring': 'I'm such an angelic sleeper.' The bombshell is determined to find love in the villa: 'If I want it, I'm going to get it. I always get what I want. 'I'm an only child, so of course I'm going to get what I want. I'm in there for myself. I want to find a man. Actually, I want to find a husband, that's what I want to find.' Commercial banking executive Yasmin, 24, from London, does not have quite so many requirements: 'I'm looking for a guy who is fit, has a nice body and who is funny with a bit of banter.' Meanwhile, she is immediately put off by any man who is 'stingy'. Yasmin has many self-professed strengths to offer: 'Flirting. I'd definitely say it's all in the eyes.' And, more unusually: 'I can make a really realistic cat sound...' Emily, 24, an insurance development executive from Aberdare, Wales, has a clear vision for her time on the Island: 'Someone with emotional intelligence for one. 'Someone who is really confident but not cocky. They can hold a room, communicate… oh, and biceps!' She is ultimately looking for a real sweetheart: 'I want someone who is just really genuine and kind. I know that sounds so naff, but it's hard to find these days. 'I'd also like a man who genuinely cares about my wellbeing and my feelings and wants to look after me. 'I want a male figure comforting me and wanting to do the little things, like getting me a morning coffee and noticing if my back needs sun cream. 'I feel like that's where people have lacked before.' But she will be turned off straight away by anyone with bad manners: 'Being rude, not saying please and thank you. 'I'd rather someone be overly polite than not say it at all.' Emily was self-aware too about how she can be in relationships: 'I'm really stubborn. 'I am always right and I don't argue unless I know I'm right. If someone's arguing with me and I know I'm right… watch out! 'I'm not very good at being the one to say "sorry". I'm stubborn and set in my ways. If I make my mind up I'm set, which can be good and bad. I'm decisive, 100 per cent.' Does her decisiveness mean she would steal a boy from another girl? 'I wouldn't go after someone who wasn't giving me the vibe back. 'I wouldn't choose someone who didn't fancy me. You can always feel if there's a vibe. 'I wouldn't want someone who doesn't want me or was giving someone else the time of day or lying to me. I want to be open and honest.' Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
