First coffee farm opens in Jabal Shams

MUSCAT: In a strategic move to develop high — altitude agriculture and expand Oman's specialty crop portfolio, Coffee Farm Company, led by founder and CEO Said al Wardi, has launched a commercial coffee cultivation project in Jabal Shams. The initiative aims to plant 6,000 coffee seedlings by 2027, positioning Oman as a potential producer of high-quality Arabica coffee.
The project began with the planting of 300 seedlings of the Yemeni Udaini variety, one of the world's oldest and most prized Arabica strains. The number is expected to rise to 5,000 seedlings in 2026 and reach 6,000 the following year. The crop is being cultivated at elevations considered critical for specialty-grade coffee, with Jabal Shams offering the right combination of altitude, temperature and humidity.
'The climate in Oman's highlands is more suitable for coffee than many people realise', said Al Wardi. 'This isn't about hobby farming, it's a serious agricultural and economic opportunity aligned with national goals'.
The project is among the first of its kind in the Sultanate of Oman. While coffee is not native to Oman, the country's mountainous regions, especially in Al Dakhiliyah and Dhofar — have shown promising results in experimental cultivation.
One of the early challenges faced by the company was acquiring viable coffee seedlings. 'Most countries classify coffee as a strategic crop and restrict seed exports', Al Wardi explained. 'We overcame this by propagating seedlings locally in Salalah and Bahla'.
To ensure sustainable expansion, the company has partnered with Nakheel Oman Development Company and the Agricultural Research Centre in Qummah, which are supporting the development of tissue-cultured plants to scale the operation. In parallel, Coffee Farm Company is investing in agri-tourism infrastructure. Plans are underway to establish a coffee visitor experience site in Jabal Shams, where tourists will be able to tour the plantations, participate in harvest activities and visit a Coffee Museum located near the popular viewpoint Shurfat Al Nakhr.
'This initiative is not just about agriculture. It's about integrating farming, tourism and heritage into one value chain', Al Wardi said.
The company will market its coffee under the name Bunn Al Madar, inspired by the traditional clay dallah used for brewing coffee in Oman. The brand already produces roasted beans and capsules; and aims to build a strong 'Made in Oman' identity.
The project supports Oman Vision 2040 objectives, which prioritise agricultural innovation, economic diversification and the development of non-oil sectors, particularly in rural and mountainous areas.
'This is just the beginning', Al Wardi said. 'With the right support and continued experimentation, Omani coffee can become a recognised name in the regional and global market'.

The workshop also included presentations about successful regional and international models on the use of AI in this field, with the aim of upgrading the efficiency of workers in the tourism sector and enabling them to adopt global practices in tourism promotion. The overall objective is to enhance the Sultanate of Oman's position as a prominent tourist destination. A training programme associated with the workshop focused on the ethical use of artificial intelligence tools and the analysis of tourism data to be used in conducting promotional and marketing campaigns that align with the objectives of Omani tourism brands. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism will announce the launch of a sustainability training programme via the Partner Support Platform, which seeks to build the capacity of the tourism sector workers and provide them with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve a balance between tourism growth and the preservation of natural and cultural resources. The workshop was one of the initiatives undertaken by the Ministry to develop the tourism sector's potential and ensure its readiness to deal with future needs in a manner that serves the goals of Oman Vision 2040.

He reviewed the latest updates on one of the most prominent national projects, which has significant implications from the tourism, scientific, research, and heritage points of view. The garden features a wide range of attractions, showcasing Oman's diverse natural environments, native plants, and trees in one unified space. It is considered a strategic project that contributes to preserving Oman's unique plant biodiversity while raising public awareness of environmental conservation. The garden is also expected to play a key role in promoting eco-tourism and environmental education. He said that the visit reflects Muscat Municipality's commitment to ensuring the successful implementation of key projects to the highest standards. He noted that the Oman Botanic Garden has reached an advanced stage of completion and serves as a model of integration between environmental development and sustainable urban planning. Once completed, the garden is expected to become one of Oman's most significant natural and cultural landmarks. He also commended the efforts of the project's teams and acknowledged the institutional partnerships between Muscat Municipality and other stakeholders in strengthening infrastructure for sustainability and environmental awareness initiatives. The Oman Botanic Garden also holds scientific and research significance. It serves as a valuable repository of data and a living archive of numerous Omani plant species. Survey efforts at the site have led to the documentation and collection of hundreds of native plants, including the discovery of 20 species that are endemic to the Sultanate and found nowhere else in the world. Muscat Municipality recently opened the 1.4 km dual road on Al Khoud Village Road, with two lanes in each direction and side pedestrian sidewalks, to ensure smooth traffic flow to the Oman Botanic Garden (OBG). The project will cover a distance of 1.5km, linking the Special Tasks Force Roundabout to the Oman Botanic Garden roundabout. The network of secondary roads includes smooth access to the garden, in addition to barrier railings, surface water drainage systems, and other facilities. The Oman Botanic Garden (OBG), located just around 35 km from Muscat International Airport, has been designed to represent the native flora in naturalistic habitats that reflect the rich botanical heritage of the region. Additionally, it serves as a one-stop destination for various avenues such as research, fun, learning, expert interactions, and an extraordinary visitor experience. OBG will offer a cable car experience to visitors for the first time in the country. Other amenities will include open playgrounds, event spaces, and interactive areas. The garden demonstrates a sustainable approach in its design, construction, and operation. The nursery in Oman Botanic Garden serves as the basis for work in the garden, supplying all required plants spread over an area of 20,000 sqm. It includes three covered glasshouses, four greenhouses, shade areas, and open areas.

His wife added, 'We were surprised to see the new seafront area — it's beautifully done. After shopping, we sat at a cafe overlooking the sea and watched the sunset. It was the perfect end to the day.' Their children, meanwhile, enjoyed exploring the market's winding paths and picking up handmade souvenirs. 'It's not just about shopping,' Salim added. 'It's about connecting with our culture. I hope my children remember this experience for a long time.' Nestled along Dhofar's coast, Al Haffa Market is more than a marketplace — it's a living expression of Omani heritage. Especially during the khareef, it draws locals and tourists seeking not only goods but a glimpse into the stories, scents and traditions. Shops brim with Omani frankincense — locally known as 'white gold' —handmade perfumes, embroidered fabrics, silver jewellery and incense crafted through centuries of tradition. For many visitors, Al Haffa is both the first and final stop in Salalah, with memories carried home in the form of fragrant treasures. A gentle transformation is underway at Al Haffa. A new seafront promenade is emerging, with cafes, restaurants and a coastal walkway enhancing the visitor experience — without sacrificing the soul of the place. Thoughtful development ensures that while the facilities grow, the spirit remains intact. During monsoon months, the market is alive from 8 am to 10 pm, especially in the evenings when families and travellers mingle under the soft glow of lights and gentle drizzle. Frankincense from Boswellia trees — found only in Dhofar and a few other regions — has shaped civilisations. Once carried in caravans to Egypt, Mesopotamia and Rome, this resin continues to be harvested the traditional way and remains a symbol of Oman's enduring legacy. Unesco-listed sites like Wadi Dawkah, Al Baleed and Shisr (Ubar) are silent yet powerful witnesses to Dhofar's historic role in global trade. Today, they attract visitors who seek to connect history, scent and story.
