Center Point High School to host Alabama State Games track and field events
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — We're just hours away from the opening ceremony for the 42nd Alabama State Games at Legacy Arena. Softball is back for the first time since 2015. More than 90 teams are registered to play softball at Bill Noble Park and the Trussville Sports Complex. We spoke with executive director Laura Creel Burt at Legacy Arena about what makes this event so special. 'There's lots of tournaments around, but the participants are not going to have this experience,' she explained. 'There's not a parade of athletes at every tournament. They're not going for gold, silver and bronze medals at every tournament, and they don't always get to have a podium moment at other tournaments. So we just feel like this is a very unique experience for athletes.' The Cauldron is now in place ahead of Friday's opening ceremony and parade of athletes at Legacy Arena. This year, more than 4,300 athletes are registered to compete in sports including softball, pickleball, tennis and track, which is being hosted by Center Point High School for the first time. Those numbers are up from 2024 by more than a thousand athletes, according to organizers. Twenty One Pilots announces 2 Alabama tour dates in 2025 Preston Wilson, track and field coach at Center Point High School says there are two types of competitors among the more than 700 athletes who will take part in events on Saturday: 'We've have people competing for PRs, which is their personal records, and you have teams competing for points and most medals,' Wilson noted. 17-year-old Ke'Asia Washington is one of the best high school girl shot putters in the state. The Center Point High School student won the silver medal at the 5A state championship. She said her strategy for Saturday is all about focus: 'I don't really look at the competition because if I look at it, then I'll be nervous,' she explained. 'I've got to go knowing I'm the top one.' If you want to come out and cheer on Washington and the other athletes. The track and field events are expected to kick off on Saturday at 8:30 and 9:00 a.m. respectively. Coach Wilson added that they do have an inclement weather plan to keep everyone safe. For more information on the Alabama State Games, click here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Deon Cain shines in the Birmingham Stallions playoff loss to the Michigan Panthers
Deon Cain shines in the Birmingham Stallions playoff loss to the Michigan Panthers The UFL playoff semifinals delivered a rare sight on Sunday — a postseason loss for the Birmingham Stallions — but it wasn't due to a lack of effort from former Clemson wideout Deon Cain. Cain hauled in six receptions for 124 yards in Birmingham's 44-29 loss to the Michigan Panthers, who were powered by another Clemson alum in kicker BT Potter. Potter nailed a 36-yard field goal and has now made 12 of 17 attempts this season, helping send Michigan to the UFL Championship on June 14 in St. Louis (8 p.m., ABC). Cain, meanwhile, capped off a standout campaign that earned him All-UFL honors. He led the league in receiving yards per game (57.1) and yards per catch (17.7), finishing third in total receiving yards (514). He also ranked second in all-purpose yards (935), thanks to 421 kick return yards. Between spring league stops, Cain has spent time with several NFL teams, including the Eagles, Bills, and Panthers. Michigan will face the DC Defenders in the title game after DC took down St. Louis 36-18. Former Clemson receiver Cornell Powell played a key role, catching four passes for 57 yards and converting a two-point attempt. Powell led the UFL during the regular season with seven receiving touchdowns. Also making an impact in the Stallions' loss was Amari Rodgers, who averaged 20.5 yards on four kickoff returns. The defeat marked Birmingham's first postseason loss since spring football's reboot in 2022, snapping a dominant run that included every USFL title and the inaugural UFL regular season crown.
