Selected players, and their three-ball rivals, in focus
Selection one – Cameron Young
He has patchy form but was tied-fourth in last month's US Open and has two top-10 finishes at the Open, having finished runner-up in 2022 and tied-eighth in 2023. He drives long, and putting can be one of his strengths.
Rivals:
Patrick Cantlay has missed the cut on his previous two major appearances, and Mackenzie Hughes missed the cut at last week's Scottish Open.
Selection two – Sepp Straka
Tied-second at the 2023 Open and twice a winner on the PGA Tour this year. The world No 8 warmed up for this with a seventh-place finish in the Scottish Open, when he tied for the lead on day one.
Rivals:
Ben Griffin missed the cut on his two previous Open starts, likewise on his latest PGA Tour start. Akshay Bhatia missed the cut on his Open debut last year, and also on his two most recent major outings.
Selection three – Harry Hall:
This Englishman is a golfer to buy shares in. He is in better form than may appear the case at a glance. He came through qualifying for the Open and played better than his tied-17th finish at last week's Scottish Open might suggest, posting rounds in the 60s on three of the four days.
Rivals:
Aaron Rai struggled at the Scottish Open (tied-47th) last week. Sahith Theegala missed the cut at the previous two Opens and has not been seen since a missed cut in early June.

Viktor Gyokeres presented to Arsenal fans ahead of friendly win over Newcastle
New signing Viktor Gyokeres watched on as Arsenal beat Newcastle 3-2 in their pre-season meeting in Singapore. The 27-year-old striker completed his £55million move from Sporting Lisbon to the Gunners on Saturday and was presented to fans at the National Stadium before kick-off on Sunday. Advertisement Great to have you with us, Viktor 👊 — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 27, 2025 One of Newcastle's new recruits made his impact on the pitch almost instantly as Anthony Elanga fired the Magpies ahead on his first start for the team after slicing home from Sandro Tonali's low cross. However, the Gunners struck twice in quick succession when Mikel Merino tucked home into the bottom corner and two minutes later Alex Murphy turned the ball into his own net. First one. ☝️ — Newcastle United (@NUFC) July 27, 2025 Jacob Murphy equalised for Newcastle after the break with a low finish from outside of the box, but Martin Odegaard snatched victory from the penalty spot in the 84th minute. Arsenal are back in pre-season action against rivals Tottenham on Thursday, while Newcastle face an all-star K League side on Wednesday. Advertisement

Luis Diaz to LEAVE Liverpool tour as Bayern Munich agree £65million deal to bolster Reds' Alexander Isak kitty
LIVERPOOL are set to bank an extra £65million for their Alexander Isak fund after Bayern Munich agreed to sign Luis Diaz. The Reds winger told Arne Slot earlier this summer that he wanted to explore a move away from Anfield. 3 Diaz, 28, is in Asia with Liverpool on their pre-season tour but was left out of the squad for their friendly against AC Milan. Slot later confirmed that the forward had been left out due to speculation over his future. And now Liverpool have given Diaz permission to leave the tour after agreeing a deal with Bayern. The Premier League champion's twice failed in attempts to convince Diaz into signing a new deal. The sale, with Darwin Nunez also expected to leave this summer, will help raise funds for the Premier League champions to continue their incredible spending spree. Liverpool have already spent £201m since winning the title, including a club-record £100m deal for Florian Wirtz, who was a target for Bayern. Despite also landing French striker Hugo Ekitike, an audacious move for Isak cannot be ruled out. The £120m-rated Swede has been left out of Newcastle's pre-season tour to Singapore having also been sent home from their training camp in Scotland. Isak, who scored 23 Premier League goals last season, has informed the Magpies of his desire to move this summer. However, Eddie Howe and the Saudi Arabian owners are digging their heels in and insist their star man is not for sale. Liverpool, though, are considering testing that resolve with a bid and will be in a stronger position with Diaz sold. Vincent Kompany wanted to add a forward following Thomas Muller's departure and Jamal Musiala's horrific leg and ankle break during the Club World Cup. Diaz was a target for Barcelona before they landed Marcus Rashford, while the German giants had already seen one bid rejected. While Liverpool are still exploring forward options, Slot has insisted he is happy with his three centre-backs after Jarrell Quansah was sold to Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds hold an interest in Marc Guehi but have not lodged a formal approach for the Crystal Palace captain. Slot said: 'I don't think we have a concern at centre-back. "In terms of depth? I think Ryan [Gravenberch] showed against Milan that he can play in that position. "He did it last season as well. Although we all know we favour him as a No 6. Wata [Endo] can play there. Joe Gomez only has a minor injury.' 3

‘I've never had to do so many' – David Moyes fears Everton crisis has left him in uncharted managerial territory
DAVID Moyes claims Everton's numbers crisis has left him in uncharted managerial territory. Veteran Moyes is beginning his 28th campaign in the dugout, leading the Toffees into their new home at the Hill Dickinson Stadium. 5 5 But the Scot says he needs 'five or six' players in the next few weeks - and that requirement was made clear as Everton were crushed 3-0 by Bournemouth at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday night. Moyes, who confirmed he is looking to land Bayern Munich's Moroccan teenager Adam Aznou in a potential £8m move, said: 'We've signed three, so if you take that off, we're still in the need of maybe five or six players. 'That's what we have to try and do. 'In the past I probably have had to sign a lot of players, but I've never had to do so many in one window as we need now.' Moyes suggested that he and the club's new Friedkin Group owners are paying for the chaos of the final years under Farhad Moshiri. He said: 'We're sort of picking up a little bit of what we're at the end of now. 'We had a lot of people out of contracts, a lot of loan players, because of the financial situation. 'So we're having to sort of find a way around that and we're trying really, really hard behind the scenes to get things done. 'But you can see we're going to need it. 'We've got no centre-halves and we're really struggling.' Everton and West Ham to fight it out for Douglas Luiz Quizzed on Aznou, who has made just two Bundesliga appearances but did well on loan at Valladolid in Spain in the second half of last term, he added: 'We have made an offer. Whether it's accepted and all done is another thing. 'But he's a young player, someone who we see having a good future and potential, rather than ready. 5 5 'If I'm being honest, we've tried to actually target more senior players if we can, players who are over the age of 25 with Premier League experience. 'That's not taking us away from the fact that we want to try and buy some young players as well. 'I'm hoping by the time we get to the end of the transfer window, we might have a balance of youth and experience.' Moyes is without Jarrad Branthwaite, James Tarkowski and Michael Keane, leaving him perilously light in defence. And he is already concerned about the impact of the African Cup of Nations that starts before Christmas and will strip him of Senegal duo Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye. 5 He said: 'I always want my players to be selected for their country. I want them to represent their countries because I think that's the right thing to do. 'But when they get taken away in the mid-season, it becomes a problem. 'So we will miss them. And it's something which I know a lot of clubs are considering. 'If you're going to buy an African player who's in the AFCON, what's going to happen? Will clubs not sign African players because of the AFCON?'
