Carl Tamayo, Changwon LG Sakers outlast Seoul to rule KBL

GMA Network17-05-2025

Carl Tamayo secured a prized addition to his expanding trophy cabinet after helping the Changwon LG Sakers rule the 2025 Korean Basketball League (KBL) on Saturday at the Jamsil Student Gymnasium.
Changwon, who had a commanding 3-0 series lead before being dragged to a decider, made sure there was no collapse this time, pulling off a narrow 62-58 escape in Game 7 to capture the club's first-ever KBL title.
Tamayo posted a double-double outing of 12 points and 10 rebounds laced with two steals and two assists on the way to his second professional title in as many teams.
He previously had a title run with Ryukyu Golden Kings in the Japan B. League last year.
Heo Il-Young led the offense for Changwon after scattering 14 points behind an impressive 4-of-5 shooting from downtown while also grabbing five rebounds.
Yu Ki-Sang and Yang Jun Seok chipped in 12 and 11 markers apiece.
Meanwhile, fellow Filipino import Juan Gomez de Liaño found himself on the opposite side of history as Seoul failed to complete the reverse sweep.
The former UP standout, however, didn't see action in Game 7.

Mikee Romero ranks 6th in US Polo Rankings in April

Mikee Romero made history for the Philippines again after ranking as the 6th overall player in the United States Polo Rankings last April. The Filipino athlete collected 130 points to barge into the top ten just weeks after he rose to 24th overall in the World Polo Tour (WPT) amateur rankings, which allowed him to become the highest Southeast Asian player. Romero's rise to top 6 now sees him in an elite company with some of the powerhouse names in polo. Tomas Panelo is at No. 1 with 205 points while Juan Martín Nero and Adolfo Cambiaso occupy the second and third spots. Barto Castagnola and Alejandro Poma are tied at fourth spot with their identical 140 points. Romero's polo pony, Niki, also earned recognition after it was included in joint number one in polo horse ranking in the United States alongside Nero's Catwoman, Grant Ganzi's Girl Power, and La Dolfina Binter and La Dolfina Jetcost of Cambiaso. "This is a deeply meaningful moment. To stand among the best players in the U.S. and to see Niki recognized beside the finest horses in the world is a tribute to the effort, preparation, and heart that went into every game," said Romero. —Bea Micaller/JMB, GMA Integrated News

Manny Pacquiao enshrined to Boxing Hall of Fame

Manny Pacquiao was inducted into the prestigious International Boxing Hall of Fame earlier today in New York, USA. Pacquiao, the lone eight-division champion in history, joined fellow Filipinos Pancho Villa, Gabriel "Flash" Elorde, and promoter Lope Sarreal. "From the streets of General Santos, to the bright light of Las Vegas, to tonight at the International Boxing Hall of Fame. No shoes, no food, no chance, just a dream in my heart," Pacquiao wrote on his official Facebook page. "I never imagined this moment, but by God's grace, here we are. This is not just about boxing. It's about faith. Family. Sacrifice. Purpose. It's about every Filipino and every fan who believed in me, even when the doubters didn't." Pacquiao's, though, journey is not over. On July 16 at MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, the 46-year-old Pacquiao will lace them up once more against WBC world welterweight champion Mario Barrios. An underdog in the upcoming fight, Pacquiao is poised to break his own record of being the oldest welterweight champion in history should he overcome his lanky Mexican opponent. —JMB, GMA Integrated News
