Doug Gilmour was called the 'Killer' not for his altercation with Tomas Sandstrom, but for having a resemblance to that of serial killer, Charlie Manson. The ice hockey center played for seven
NHL
teams, but the Toronto Maple Leafs seem to be his favorite team! Why do we say that? The answer is in the headline! On August 19, Doug Gilmour shared a tweet on X: 'One of the biggest days in my hockey career and one of the greatest honours 31 years ago today.
💙 #leafsforever #goleafsgo #ripburnsy,' with the 31-year-old image of Pat Burns, the then head coach of the Maple Leafs handing over the jersey to him.
Fans recall Doug Gilmour as a warrior, a leader, and favorite Maple Leafs player of all time
Reacting to this nostalgic moment shared by Doug Gilmour, fans went back in time and reminisced about the center's playing days. One fan recalled the exact day when Gilmour was named franchise captain, 'One of the best days in Leafs history for many of us fans.'
Another compared him to the recent Maple Leafs players, 'You were an amazing Captain for the Leafs. Pure grit & heart, something the Leafs have been sorely lacking.' A third fan wanted to relive those days, 'It was the beginning of a great run for the Leafs and us fans, Killer! Wish we could do it all over again!'
One fan said that Gilmour came to Toronto when they needed him the most, 'Maple Leafs were a team searching for identity.
What they got with Gilmour was a warrior, a leader, a legend. Forever my favorite Captain. 🐐.'
(Comments via Doug Gilmour's X post)
Another fan thanked the captain, saying, 'It was a great time to be a Leaf fan. Thanks for the memories Killer.' A third fan mentioned the 1993 Stanley Cup playoffs between the Los Angeles Kings and the Toronto Maple Leafs, 'as a kid I have learned hockey by watching the epic series LA vs Toronto in 93. You were amazing! Best Leafs playoff of my lifetime.'
But a fourth fan mentioned a heartbreaking fact, 'Except you let Wayne Gretzky and his LA Kings get to you in 93 and that's what destroyed the Leafs back then.' What was the incident? What really happened between Doug Gilmour and The Great One? Let's find out.
Doug Gilmour became a captain after LA Kings' Wayne Gretzky eliminated Toronto Maple Leafs in 1993 playoffs
'The High Stick' - Kings vs Leafs '93 - Game 6 - TSN Feature 2017 (HD)
In Game 6 of the 1993 playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Los Angeles Kings had tied 4-4. In the first minute of overtime, the LA Kings' ice hockey center Wayne Gretzky high-sticked the Maple Leafs' ice hockey center Doug Gilmour, causing Gilmour to fall to the ground after Gretzky had shot the puck.
TSN Hockey Analyst Jeff O'Neil reached out to the then-NHL referee Mike Fraser and Doug Gilmour regarding this incident in 2017.
The NHL referee at the time, Kerry Fraser, asked Gilmour about the incident. The center said at the time, 'Gretz took a shot and his follow-through hit me in the chin.' The referee replied to him, 'Well, if that's the case, the follow-through of a shot is not a penalty.'
Fraser noted his suspicion at the time, 'But something just didn't add up.
Wayne Gretzky was always a guy who would be there pleading his case. He kinda moved off to the sidewalk. He wasn't there to try and make sure there wasn't anything going against him.'
Fraser later reflected on the incident and confessed, 'It was a reach, then clip. It was not a follow-through shot. It was a missed call.'
With ten seconds left on the clock in Game 6, Gretzky scored an overtime goal and eliminated Doug's team from the 1993 playoffs. However, Gilmore had an excellent 1992-1993 season, winning many accolades–1993 All-Star Game, NHL's top defensive forward, and Frank J. Selke Trophy. The following season, he was named franchise captain! To this day, Gilmour celebrates the anniversary of being named franchise captain–31 years since that glory.

Former Maple Leafs star reacts boldly to shocking trade rumors involving two of Auston Matthews' teammates

Blockbuster trade chatter around Auston Matthews' teammates gets blunt reaction from ex-Toronto Maple Leafs player (Imagn Images) The Toronto Maple Leafs are entering one of their most intriguing offseasons in recent memory. After Mitch Marner's departure to the Vegas Golden Knights in a sign-and-trade, the team finds itself at a crossroads. Fans are now turning their attention to Auston Matthews, the franchise's centerpiece, and the kind of supporting cast he'll have around him when the puck drops next season. Maple Leafs weigh stability and possible big moves for Auston Matthews Toronto made one thing clear early—stability matters. John Tavares committed to four more years with the team, signing an extension worth an average annual value of $4.38 million. That decision not only secures veteran leadership but also ensures Matthews has another proven scorer alongside him. Meanwhile, Matthew Knies is set to continue developing on Matthews' wing, a move that reflects the Leafs' belief in building around their young star. Still, speculation lingers about who might be shipped out to bring in more firepower. Nick Robertson and Morgan Rielly are the names most often floated in trade chatter. While Robertson has shown flashes of promise, questions remain about his long-term fit. Rielly, on the other hand, has been criticized for plateauing at a stage when Toronto needs defensive reliability. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? Sit Down Before You See What He Looks Like Now 33 Bridges Undo That's where the idea of Erik Karlsson enters the conversation. Former Leafs defenseman Jay Rosehill didn't mince words when asked about the possibility of such a deal. 'I take that all day. We're trying to get rid of Nick Robertson in general, where does he fit? Whose spot is he taking? I just don't think he's going to be here, and Morgan Rielly has stalled,' Rosehill said on Leafs Morning Take. Will Maple Leafs pursue Karlsson to support Auston Matthews? Karlsson, a Norris Trophy winner with elite offensive instincts, could be the kind of player capable of reshaping Toronto's blue line. Rosehill highlighted his potential impact: 'To get the upside of Erik Karlsson, and someone who can quarterback a PP and run the offense like Karlsson has done in the past, with all his accomplishments, he would be great, but I don't think anyone is really going to take that trade.' At this point, no negotiations are underway, but the discussion underscores the urgency for Toronto. With Matthews in his prime, the Maple Leafs can't afford half-measures. Whether it's Karlsson or another star acquisition, the coming months may decide just how far this team can push in its pursuit of a Stanley Cup. Maple Leafs eye top-six winger from Penguins in bold trade proposal

Penguins star Bryan Rust at center of NHL trade rumors (Imagn Images) As the Toronto Maple Leafs' fabled 'Core Four' era has finally come to an end, and with their pursuit of a top-line replacement in the wake of Mitch Marner's departure, a prominent trade scenario is gaining momentum. As per reports in a bold trade proposal, the Maple Leafs is targeting Pittsburgh Penguins right-winger Bryan Rust. Bryan Rust is a reliable top-six winger who scores between 25 and 30 goals in every season. Previously, he recorded 65 points last year and still has three years left on the contract he signed in 2022. With his no-movement clause now expired, the Penguins could consider moving him. Is Maple Leaf vying to acquire Penguins' Bryan Rust? After the breakup with Mitch Marner , general manager Brad Treliving is feeling the pressure, as he has to strengthen Toronto's team, and one name that's been brought up as a possible solution is Bryan Rust from the Pittsburgh Penguins, as suggested by Heavy Sports' Tristin McKinstry. McKinstry of Heavy Sports noted that Rust would be a strong fit for Toronto as the team continues its hunt for a Stanley Cup. "Rust has the ability to score 25-30 goals a season. And he can do so rather reliably. He would be a fantastic addition for a Maple Leafs team seeking to end its longstanding Stanley Cup drought," he added. It is to be noted that earlier, Pittsburgh acquired Nick Robertson, David Kampf, a 2028 first-round pick, and a conditional 2026 third-round pick. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Remember Him? However, despite all this talk, nothing has happened yet, and that's likely because Dubas is asking for a hefty return, especially for Rust. The proposed trade that would send Rust to Toronto seems like a great fit for the Maple Leafs, but it's hard to believe the Penguins would go for it. While the draft picks are appealing, Dubas has made it clear he's looking for young talent or prospects in any deal, which means Nick Robertson and David Kampf probably won't catch his eye.
