The Monarchs advance to face No. 6-seed Appalachian State in Friday's fourth-round.
Davis shot 6 of 14 from the field, including 6 for 13 from 3-point range, and went 5 for 6 from the line for the Monarchs (14-19). Sean Durugordon added 19 points while shooting 7 for 15 (2 for 4 from 3-point range) and 3 of 4 from the free-throw line while he also had 12 rebounds. R.J. Blakney shot 4 of 10 from the field and 1 of 3 from the free-throw line to finish with nine points. The Monarchs stopped a six-game losing streak with the win.
The Bobcats (16-16) were led in scoring by Tylan Pope, who finished with 15 points and six rebounds. Josh O'Garro added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Texas State. Kaden Gumbs also had 10 points.
Davis scored 17 second-half points, including their game-winning shot.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. has been deported to Mexico, where he's wanted for alleged cartel ties, following his arrest in the U.S. for overstaying his visa and lying on a green card application. Chávez was handed over by authorities and admitted to a prison outside of the city of Hermosillo, in the northern state of Sonora, an official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the news at her daily press conference. 'I understand he was deported. I don't know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he was arriving in Mexico," Sheinbaum said. Chávez, 39, had a warrant for his arrest in Mexico for alleged arms and drug trafficking and ties to the Sinaloa Cartel. Alejandro Gertz Manero, Mexico's attorney general, said the investigation into Chávez started in 2019. The boxer, who is the son of legendary Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez, was arrested July 3 days after his high-profile fight with Jake Paul in California. Sheinbaum said after the arrest she hoped the boxer would be deported to face his charges. Chávez's father was a massive celebrity in the 1980s and '90s who mixed social circles with drug dealers and claimed to have been friends with drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes. The iconic fighter defended his son following his arrest, but has not spoken since the deportation. The younger Chávez has battled drug addiction for much of his boxing career, failing drug tests, serving suspensions and egregiously missing weight while being widely criticized for his intermittent dedication to the sport. Chavez won the WBC middleweight title in 2011 and defended it three times. He shared the ring with generational greats Canelo Álvarez and Sergio Martinez, losing to both. In 2012, he was convicted of drunken driving in Los Angeles and sentenced to 13 days in jail. In January 2024, he was arrested on gun charges. Police said he possessed two AR-style ghost rifles. He was later freed on a $50,000 bond and on condition he went to a residential drug treatment facility. Questions loom over rest of Browns quarterback room after Flacco named the Week 1 starter
BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Kevin Stefanski resolved the biggest storyline of the Cleveland Browns training camp by naming Joe Flacco the starting quarterback on Monday. But as is the case with the quarterback position in Brownstown, naming a starter for the Week 1 opener against the Cincinnati Bengals set off a new round of questions. The one at the top of everyone's mind is how long Flacco thinks he can hang on to the job? Of the 10 quarterbacks who have started a game for the Browns since they traded Baker Mayfield in 2022, Flacco is tied for fifth with five starts in 2023, when he went 4-1 and directed Cleveland to its third playoff berth since returning to the league in 1999. 'Well, we all know how that works. I mean, that's everybody in the league, but it's not really my job to look at it in that way. It's just to go out there and play my game. Kind of like I've been doing all training camp and not worrying about all that stuff, just going out there, playing my game and being the best I can," Flacco said Tuesday. "I felt like I was having a good camp with the reps that I was given, and that's all you can do.' Flacco would also become the 11th different quarterback in league history to start a Week 1 game when they were at least 40 years old. Even though Flacco was the only Browns quarterback who has not missed time during training camp because of an injury, Stefanski said the decision went beyond what has transpired for the last month. 'I understand with the injuries, how that may look, that's really not the case here,' he said. "Joe performed really well, both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room, you name it. What he's able to bring to the football team, he's earned that role.' Stefanski has not determined if Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders will be Flacco's backup. General manager Andrew Berry also has one week to determine if the team will indeed keep four quarterbacks on the roster. According to Sportradar, that has happened only five times since 2000. Pickett continues to come back from a hamstring strain but did get some snaps in 11-on-11 drills on Tuesday. Sanders was limited due to an oblique injury. Flacco and the starters will see action in Saturday's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams, with the amount of playtime left to be determined. 'I think we all feel pretty good. You only get a certain amount of reps out there, and I think we've made the most of it, and I think that's every team in the league to a certain extent," Flacco said. "I think the good thing about this week is, we kind of get to put ourselves through a little bit of a game plan and simulate what we would be doing during the year. I think that's going to give everybody that extra confidence to take that next step.'

David Peterson dominates the Nationals and Mark Vientos homers again as the Mets win 8-1
WASHINGTON (AP) — David Peterson dominated the Nationals again, Mark Vientos homered for the second consecutive game and the New York Mets pounded Washington 8-1 on Tuesday night for their third straight victory. Peterson (8-5), who blanked the Nats on June 11 in New York for his first career shutout, extended his scoreless streak against Washington to 25 innings dating to last season. He finally allowed a run when Dylan Crews led off the eighth with a triple and scored on a double-play grounder. The only Mets starter who has reliably pitched deep into games, Peterson finished the eighth. He allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Juan Soto hit his 31st homer, Jeff McNeil homered and drove in three runs, and Brett Baty also went deep for the Mets, who may be breaking out of a funk that began in late July. New York had lost 14 of 16 before this run of three wins in three states that began Saturday at Citi Field and continued Sunday night at the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where Vientos hit a three-run homer. 'We need him now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before the game of Vientos, who hit 27 homers in 111 games last year but has seen sporadic playing time lately.
