Sofia Iman and Suria KLCC kick off Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week 2025
Themed 'Heritage Reimagined, Style Redefined,' the showcase captivated a 500-
strong audience with a collection that celebrated the rich legacy of Malaysian craftsmanship through a contemporary lens.
The opening show was a vibrant affair, graced by prominent figures including the founder of Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week, Andrew Tan and the group chief executive officer of KLCC (Holdings) Sdn Bhd, Datuk Sr Mohd Salem Kailany, who were present for the momentous occasion.
Many guests were beautifully draped in songket and batik, echoing the show's theme and paying homage to the nation's rich textile heritage.
In a unique and inspiring display of unity, Sofia Iman's vision was interpreted by eight celebrated Malaysian designers: ABU, Ashley @ Kapas, Atelier Prive Melson, Fuza by Fuzana Mokhtaza, Jimmy Lim, Jimmy Wong, Tangoo and Uzair Shoid.
The collection served as a tribute to the master weavers of Terengganu, the artisans behind the brand's exquisite songket pieces. By infusing traditional techniques with modern silhouettes, the show aimed to elevate songket beyond its traditional confines, presenting it as a globally relevant fashion statement.

Malaysia-Russia ties strengthened by friendship, says King
MOSCOW: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, stated that his state visit to Russia reflects his sincere desire to strengthen bilateral ties. He affirmed Malaysia's view of Russia as a trusted and important partner. 'Our diplomatic relations span more than five decades, having been formally established in April 1967,' said Sultan Ibrahim. Govt mulls foreign investor rule shift to boost MSMEs
THE government is mulling the possibility of enhancing localisation requirements for foreign investors for the benefit of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said this is part of efforts to create a resilient ecosystem that allows local companies to reap spillover benefits and develop into technology-based multinational corporations (MNCs). 'To ensure investments lead to meaningful gains such as quality jobs for Malaysians and the development of local technology ecosystems, Miti and the Finance Ministry will introduce the New Investment Incentive Framework (NIIF) in the third quarter of this year,' he said. Liew said the government is committed to transforming Malaysia's role in global supply chains by strengthening national resilience and nurturing homegrown tech firms in strategic sectors such as semiconductors. 'There must be a mindset shift. For too long, MSMEs have been seen only as support players for foreign MNCs. 'The new thinking emphasises the potential of Malaysian firms to become global technology-based MNCs,' he said. Liew added that the government is determined to lead the shift from being a hub for 'Made in Malaysia' outsourced production to 'Made by Malaysia' technological innovation. He pointed to the RM25bil GEAR-uP programme under the Finance Ministry, which aims to catalyse high-growth, high-value sectors such as semiconductors and energy transition, while also empowering marginalised communities and nurturing local talent. On the US trade policy, Liew described the reduced 19% retaliatory tariff rate on Malaysia as a success, saying Malaysia had engaged in 'complex and time-sensitive' negotiations to secure the agreed rate. Malaysia's exports to the United States accounted for 13.2% of the country's total exports in 2024, which amounted to RM1.508 trillion, he added. To mitigate the effects of the US tariffs, he said Miti and its agency Matrade are working to diversify Malaysia's export markets. This includes exploring non-traditional destinations and strengthening the export network to fast-growing emerging markets such as Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Asean.

Soon – licence for short-term stays
SHORT-TERM rental accommodation (STRA) operators will soon be required to obtain a business licence from local authorities to register as tourist accommodation premises, said the Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister. Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said the matter was agreed upon by the ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry to improve regulatory control over STRA and tourist lodging premises. 'This is crucial as licensing and enforcement of accommodation premises come under the respective state's local authorities,' he said in a written reply to Rodziah Ismail (PH–Ampang). Rodziah wanted to know why the launch of the STRA guidelines had been delayed, and for a revised timeline to ensure smooth preparations for Visit Malaysia 2026. She also asked how the government planned to align STRA regulations with the Tourism Industry Act 1992 (Act 482) to avoid overlapping jurisdictions. Tiong said the ministry has completed a preliminary review of Act 482 and aims to table the amendments in Parliament by year-end or early 2026. The proposed amendments followed 54 engagement sessions involving nearly 1,000 participants, including representatives from various ministries, agencies, NGOs and industry players, including those from Sabah and Sarawak. The proposed changes include improvements to licensing processes, introduction of insurance protection, stronger enforcement, registration of digital platforms and setting up of a Tourism Tribunal. Tiong said the Planning Guidelines for STRA will soon be tabled for Cabinet's consideration. Once approved, it will be presented to the National Council for Local Government before being adopted by state governments and local councils.
