'On behalf of Malaysian employers, including those with regional operations, supply chains and investment footprints in both Thailand and Cambodia, we express our deep appreciation for the Prime Minister's bold diplomatic intervention and rapid resolution of the escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. 'Employers across the region, particularly those in labour-intensive manufacturing, agribusiness, logistics and cross-border retail, now have the opportunity to continue operations without disruption while maintaining the safety of their workforce and facilities. 'MEF commends the commitment of both Thailand and Cambodia's peaceful conflict resolution through Asean platforms,' said its president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman. He added that since Malaysia maintains substantial trade and investment ties with both Thailand and Cambodia, any instability would pose real threats to business continuity, supply chains and regional confidence. Syed Hussain said the swift de-escalation will ease concerns raised by many members with direct operations or investment interests in both nations and help prevent further commercial losses, supply chain disruptions and reputational risks that can emerge from prolonged conflicts. Indonesian rupiah, Thai baht lead Asia forex lower as US tariff deadline looms
SINGAPORE: Asian currencies weakened on Tuesday, led by the Thai baht and the Indonesian rupiah, as investors focused on upcoming US trade negotiations and the looming August 1 tariff deadline set by US President Donald Trump. Thailand expects to conclude trade talks with the United States, its largest export market, before the deadline and avoid tariffs as high as 36 per cent, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said, riding the momentum from Trump's deal with Europe over the weekend. The Thai baht weakened as much as 0.5 per cent to 32.51 per dollar, its biggest intraday decline since July 9, while Indonesia's rupiah fell 0.4 per cent to a one-month low of 16,400. Taiwan's dollar dropped more than 0.4 per cent to its lowest point since July 1, and currencies across the region declined, with investors pondering over the implications for growth and inflation on the global economy from the tariffs. Trump's trade deal with Europe initially lifted market sentiment, but investors quickly realised the terms largely favoured the United States. This reinforced dollar strength, adding pressure on regional currencies. Officials in Seoul are scrambling in an all-out push to clinch a trade deal ahead of the August 1 deadline to remove or reduce tariffs threatened by Trump against the country's key industrial exports to the United States. The urgency underscores a broader regional race to secure favourable terms after Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines and Japan already clinched trade agreements with Washington, creating a precedent for other Asian economies. Meanwhile, US and Chinese economic leaders held more than five hours of talks in Stockholm on Monday, working to resolve disputes fuelling the economic conflict between the world's two largest economies and extend their current truce by three months. Regional equities fell alongside currencies, with Taiwan's benchmark index slipping more than 1 per cent to a one-week low. Singapore and the Philippine markets dropped more than 0.5 per cent each, while Indonesian and South Korean shares bucked the trend, posting modest gains. Central bank meetings loom large for the remainder of the week, with the US Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan and the Monetary Authority of Singapore set to announce policy decisions this week. "With no policy changes expected from the BOJ, Fed, or MAS this week, EM Asian currencies are unlikely to see significant movement from these central bank meetings," said Chandresh Jain, rates strategist at BNP Paribas. "However, if MAS surprises by cutting the SGD NEER slope, it could initially drive USDSGD (the US Dollar-Singapore Dollar pair) higher."

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia-Cambodia Business Association (MCBA) has commended Malaysia's leadership role in brokering an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia, following a special meeting held in Putrajaya yesterday. MCBA founding president Datuk Seri Ricky Yaw praised Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for his proactive diplomacy, noting that MCBA, as a platform dedicated to regional economic cooperation, welcomes Malaysia's leadership in his capacity as ASEAN Chair. He said Anwar's efforts had brought the leaders of both countries to Kuala Lumpur for urgent dialogue in response to escalating tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border. 'This ceasefire is a critical step toward restoring peace and regional stability. We extend our highest respect to Malaysia for the leadership demonstrated in facilitating this breakthrough. 'At the same time, we also pay high tribute to Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai for their political foresight and courage in making responsible decisions that balance national interest with regional peace,' he said in a statement. He added that MCBA, as a regional business association promoting peace, trade, and investment, firmly believes that economic growth must be grounded in mutual respect, regional cooperation, and long-term stability. Yesterday, Hun Manet and Wechayachai agreed to an 'immediate and unconditional ceasefire' over the ongoing border dispute, following a special meeting brokered by Anwar at the official residence of the Malaysian Prime Minister, the Seri Perdana Complex in Putrajaya. The two Southeast Asian neighbours have a long history of diplomatic tensions over an 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch of their shared border.
