LSG vs SRH: Eshan Malinga's stunning catch compounds Rishabh Pant's horror show

India Today19-05-2025

Sri Lanka fast bowler Eshan Malinga joined the list of contenders for the best catch of the IPL 2025 season, pulling off a stunning grab for SunRisers Hyderabad against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Monday, 19 May.The catch came at a particularly unfortunate moment for Rishabh Pant, who was looking to find form after promoting himself to No. 3 in his first match since the resumption of the IPL. | LSG vs SRH, IPL 2025 coverage |advertisementPant looked scratchy at the crease following a sensational 115-run opening partnership between Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram. His decision to bat ahead of Nicholas Pooran-LSG's most dangerous big-hitter-raised eyebrows. Despite his efforts to play aggressively and display more positive body language, Pant managed only 7 runs off six deliveries.
Off the final delivery of the 12th over, Pant was deceived by a slower ball from the Sri Lankan pacer. Beaten for pace, he chipped the ball straight back towards the bowler. Eshan produced a moment of brilliance, diving to his left and taking a spectacular one-handed catch. With minimal time to react, Eshan timed his dive perfectly, completing one of the finest return catches of the season.Magnificent Malinga!Athleticism on display from Eshan Malinga as he grabs a stunner to send back Rishabh Pant! #LSG 133/2 after 13 overs.Updates https://t.co/GNnZh90u7T#TATAIPL | #LSGvSRH | @SunRisers pic.twitter.com/5rSouA8Kw0— IndianPremierLeague (@IPL) May 19, 2025advertisementPant looked dejected, unable to believe his misfortune. The LSG captain slowly trudged back to the pavilion, as reactions from the Lucknow dugout also appeared subdued. It has been Pant's worst IPL season to date, falling short of expectations at his new franchise. The weight of his hefty price tag seems to be affecting his performance, as he continues to struggle with form.Earlier in the season, Pant faced criticism for demoting himself down the batting order and sending in-form players ahead of him. Yet, when he finally chose to step up and take responsibility, luck failed to favour him.Pant has managed only 135 runs in 12 matches, at a dismal average of 12.27 and a strike rate of just 100. His lack of confidence has been evident in his body language-far removed from the flamboyant wicketkeeper-batter known for his fearless stroke play.Despite Pant's continued struggles, Nicholas Pooran's brisk cameo helped Lucknow Super Giants post a competitive total of 205. SunRisers Hyderabad, however, let the game slip in the death overs, lacking discipline with the ball and missing the chance to restrict LSG to under 190. Eshan stood out for SunRisers with the ball taking two wickets and conceding less than 7 runs per over in his four-over quota.Stay updated on IPL 2025 with India Today! Angelo Mathews Last Dance: Sri Lanka Announce Squad For Bangladesh Tests, Make Wholesale Changes; Check Whos In, Whos Out

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced the squad for the upcoming Bangladesh Test series, starting on June 17 in Galle. The series will kick off the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Amidst all the squads and matchups, all eyes will be on Sri Lankan veteran all-rounder Angelo Mathews as the first Test will be his last for Sri Lanka in whites. The legend will hang his boots from Test cricket after the first match scheduled to play at Galle International Cricket stadium. Sri Lanka's Overhaul Post Australia Tour Sri Lanka suffered badly against Australia, failing to even give a fight in the series despite it being their home ground. Australia thrashed SL 2-0 at their home ground and what followed is the overhaul in team selection, keeping an eye on the future. SL has dropped five players - Sadeera Samarawickrama, Ramesh Mendis, Nishan Peiris, Vishwa Fernando, and Jeffrey Vandersay after disappointing performance in the last series. Interestingly 6 uncapped players will make their way to the team, announcing a new era. The 18-member squad has these new faces - Lahiru Udara, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Sonal Dinusha, Pawan Ratnayake, Tharindu Ratnayake and Isitha Wijesundara. Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh Tests schedule 1st Test: Galle (June 17-21) 2nd Test: Colombo (June 25-29) Angelo Mathews's Legacy Angelo Mathews has been the third highest scorer for SL in Test format with 8167 runs to his name. He has represented Lanka in 118 tests and has scored with an average of 44.62 with 16 hundreds to his name. The right hand batter also has 45 half centuries, even leading the side for 34 tests. Along with batting, he was also very handy with his bowling taking 33 wickets. Angelo recently revealed as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo that his major regret in career would be not being able to cross the 10 thousand run mark despite having such a decorated career. "To finish third on the list of Sri Lanka's Test run-scorers, behind two of the greatest that have ever played for Sri Lanka (Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene) - that makes me really proud. I know there is regret about 10,000, but I'm happy reaching 8000-odd. Due to injuries I couldn't play a lot of Test cricket as well. But I'm fortunate that despite that, I was able to play 118 Tests," he said.

No Nicholas Pooran, no problem: West Indies slam 256 runs in T20I vs Ireland

Star West Indies batter Nicholas Pooran might have called time on his international career, but that had no bearing on the team's T20I match against Ireland on June 15. On the back of Evin Lewis and Shai Hope's incredible opening partnership, the Windies hit their second-highest T20I total at the Bready Cricket Ground on Windies scored a total of 256 runs for the loss of 5 wickets, just two runs short of their highest total in T20Is - 258/5, which came against South Africa in 2023. Lewis and Hope added 122 runs in just 10.3 overs before Hope was dismissed by Barry McCarthy against the run of play. The Windies lost a bit of momentum after that but ended up finishing strong, hitting 60 runs in the last three overs. Keacy Carty, who had started slow, lit up at the end and had tremendous help from Romario Shepherd, who finished with 19* off just 6 bowlers were taken to the cleaners. Except for Matthew Humphreys, who finished with an incredible 2/16, the figures of the rest did not make for good reading. Liam McCarthy, on debut, got hammered for 0/81 in his four overs — the second-worst figures in the history of T20Is. Evin Lewis was the star of the show, hitting 91 off just 44 balls. He was dismissed on the second ball of the 13th over, falling in the nervous nineties. Despite falling 9 short of a deserved century, Lewis was able to set up the team for their huge was the third and final T20I of the series. Star player criticises Josh Hazlewood for choosing IPL over national duties, says...

Josh Hazlewood. (PIC - X) Former Australian pacer Mitchell Johnson has lashed out at compatriot Josh Hazlewood for prioritising the Indian Premier League over the World Test Championship final against South Africa, saying it had raised 'eyebrows'. One of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's standout bowlers, Hazlewood, 34, had rejoined the southern franchise after the IPL was temporarily suspended due to the border flare-up between India and Pakistan, even as some other Australian players decided against returning to India for the remainder of the tournament. RCB went on to defeat Punjab Kings to lift their maiden IPL trophy with Hazlewood, who ended up with 22 wickets this season, accounting for dangerous opener Priyansh Arya in the final. Hazlewood, a vital cog in the Australian pace battery in the WTC final at Lord's which South Africa won by five wickets on Saturday, could manage only two wickets. 'We've seen concerns about Hazlewood's fitness in recent years, and his decision to prioritise returning to the delayed Indian Premier League over his national team preparations raised eyebrows,' wrote Johnson, who played six IPL seasons, representing Kolkata Knight Riders, Kings XI Punjab (Punjab Kings) and Mumbai Indians, in the West Australian. Taking aim at senior players like Mitchell Starc, Hazlewood, captain Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon, among others, he said that if their aim was to prolong their send-offs till after the Ashes, it was a wrong mindset. 'Our successful 'big four' bowling attack of Mitchell Starc, Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon can't be taken for granted as a lock going forward either. 'If veteran players are sticking around just for the Ashes as a send-off, it does beg the question of whether that's the right mindset. It's crucial that we embrace the future and build confidence in selecting our next Test players,' added Johnson, who has more than 550 wickets in international cricket. He argued that players like young Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and even 36-year-old pacer Scott Boland, who were desperate to perform for the country weren't finding a place in the national side. 'Players on the fringe such as Sam Konstas, Josh Inglis and Scott Boland, despite being 36, have a different mentality. They're eager to prove themselves every time they get a chance. 'I'm not being overly critical of an ageing team which has achieved plenty together. Our established players including the senior bowling quartet, Usman Khawaja, (Steve) Smith and (Marnus) Labuschagne, have achieved some great things.' He said that the upcoming Test series against the West Indies was the right opportunity to give deserving players an opportunity to showcase their talent. 'It's essential to consider when the right time is to make some tough calls. The upcoming three-Test Windies tour seems like an excellent opportunity to give deserving players a chance to shine, and the finger injury to Smith might have the silver lining of prompting some regeneration. 'Finding a specialist No.3 is crucial, and with the form Labuschagne has shown over the past 18 months, it's hard to justify moving him back into that position. Trying to make changes in all top-three batting slots at once would indeed be risky, and I don't think the selectors will go that route,' he argued. 'Konstas looms as a solid option for the pitches in the West Indies, especially with an experienced player in Khawaja alongside him,' he added.
