Iyer 'burdened by price tag' theory addressed by Rahane: 'Someone is not going to work harder if he's getting 20 crore'
Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) campaign in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season ended on the worst possible note as the Ajinkya Rahane-led side faced a 110-run shellacking at the hands of Pat Cummins-led SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The loss resulted in KKR eventually finishing at the eighth spot in the points table. KKR were seen as one of the contenders to win the trophy this season. However, the franchise was bogged down by the poor form of Venkatesh Iyer, Ramandeep Singh, Quinton de Kock, Ramanullah Gurbaz, Harshit Rana and more. The biggest setback was Venkatesh Iyer who failed to set the IPL stage on fire after being picked by the franchise for INR 23.75 crore in the mega auction. The KKR vice-captain struggled to get going with the bat, scoring just 142 runs in 11 matches at an average of 20.29 and a strike rate of 139.22. It remains to be seen whether he will be retained ahead of next year's IPL. Iyer also missed a few games towards the end of the IPL 2025 season due to an injury. The left-hander received the backing of skipper Ajinkya Rahane, who dismissed the theory of the Madhya Pradesh batter being bogged down by the price tag pressure. 'What I can say is, you know, if a player gets 20 plus crore or if a player gets 1 or 2 crore or 3 or 4 crore, your attitude doesn't change on the field. That's what matters. As a player, you only focus on the controllable things. And I felt Venkatesh Iyer was actually focusing on the controllable things,' Rahane told reporters after the match against SunRisers Hyderabad. 'He was practising hard, doing, trying his best, even during the games, whichever matches he played before getting injured. I thought he did really well. It's just that for us as a team, 3-4 guys were out of form. That was the only reason I thought we struggled this year. But your attitude doesn't change,' he added. Rahane also said that no player will start working harder after receiving more than INR 20 crore in the mega auction, and similarly, no player will take it easy if he gets less than INR 5 crore. 'Someone's not going to work doubly harder if he's getting 20 plus crore or someone's not going to work less harder when he's getting 1, 2, 3 crore, whatever it is,' said Rahane. 'For us cricketers, it's always about following what are the things which we have in our hands and the attitude. I thought his attitude was fantastic. He was always looking to contribute to the team on and off the field,' he added.

Cummins joked that it was quite scary to watch the likes of Heinrich Klaasen, Travis Head, and Abhishek Sharma bat in full flow in the final few finish. The last few games of the season, lots of things clicked and it was scary to watch that kind of batting. With the calibre of the players we have, we can't play any worse than what we did earlier. With the players we have, we should be making the finals; this year we didn't," Cummins SRH captain rued the fact that they did not apply themselves enough on the tricky wickets of the IPL this season, which did not resemble the roads (flat decks) that were built in 2024."We get wickets like here (New Delhi), we've got to max out and get 250-260, and other ones where we need to graft and get to 170, which we didn't. Quite a few people got opportunities, we looked at each one of them when selecting a team, but couldn't fit them in. Really happy with the squad we have got, few players went with injuries back home, we used 20 players," Cummins Watch IN THIS STORY#IPL 2025

Highest IPL team scores: SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) scored 278/3 against the Kolkata Knight Riders on Sunday to go into the record books yet again to score the third highest Indian Premier League total. SRH already hold the record for the highest team total in Indian Premier League history, having smashed a record 287/3 against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2024 season. The Orange Army also smashed 277/3 against Mumbai Indians in the same season. SRH also whipped up the sixth-highest total with a whopping 266/7 against Delhi Capitals. They also scored the second highest total in IPL history in their 2025 season opener against Rajasthan Royals with 286 runs. Thus, SRH have 4 of the top 5 highest totals in the league's history with Kolkata Knight Riders' 272/7 vs DC in 2024, the only other team in the top 5. In the match, Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head gave SRH a blistering start with Heinrich Klaasen chipping in with stormy century in just 37 balls. The Kolkata bowlers couldn't catch a break at all with the Hyderabad batters making merry on a flat pitch. Klaasen led a scintillating top-order batting performance with a sensational hundred to power Sunrisers Hyderabad to a challenging 278 for 3 against Kolkata Knight Riders in their final IPL match here on Sunday. Opting to bat, Klaasen smashed 105 not out off 39 balls, while Travis Head made 76 off 40 balls and opener Abhishek Sharma hit a 16-ball 32. Sunil Narine (2/42) picked up two wickets. Telugu box-office faces summer slump amid star absence and OTT dominance
The 2025 summer season has proven to be one of the dullest for the Telugu film industry in recent years, with theatres witnessing significantly low footfalls. Traditionally a profitable season due to school holidays and family outings, this year has failed to produce even a single box office hit as May draws to a close. Industry insiders and trade observers point to the absence of major stars on the big screen as a key reason for the current slump. Theatres thrive on star power, and with only Pawan Kalyan's 'Hari Hara Veera Mallu' and Dhanush-Nagarjuna's 'Kubera' scheduled for release in the coming weeks, there's been a noticeable void in excitement. 'Bhairavam,' set to release at month-end, has yet to generate strong buzz. Contrary to popular belief, the ongoing IPL season isn't being blamed entirely. While cricket does impact box office collections, this year's lackluster performance by teams like Sun Risers Hyderabad and even fan-favorite CSK has reduced the tournament's usual pull. The real challenge, experts argue, lies in soaring ticket and food prices in multiplexes and the shrinking theatrical window—many films hitting OTT just four weeks after release. The shift in audience behaviour is evident. With changing tastes and rising preference for home viewing, especially among the younger generation, the habit of watching films in theatres is slowly fading. Unless the industry reassesses pricing strategies and collaborates with OTT platforms for sustainable models, theatre culture may continue its downward spiral in the Telugu states.

BCCI takes action against Rajat Patidar and Pat Cummins, slaps hefty fine after RCB and SRH breach IPL code of conduct
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain Rajat Patidar and SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) skipper Pat Cummins have been fined after both sides were found guilty of breaching Indian Premier League's (IPL) Code of Conduct in Match No.61 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Patidar played the fixture against SunRisers Hyderabad as an impact sub and in his place, Jitesh Sharma led the side. However, the fine has been levied on Patidar as he is the full-time captain for RCB this season. Patidar has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate. Considering this was his team's second offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Patidar has been fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, have each been individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser. On the other hand, SRH captain Pat Cummins has also been fined. His team was also found guilty of maintaining a slow over-rate. The Australia Test and ODI captain has been fined INR 12 lakh. 'As it was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Cummins was fined INR 12 Lakh,' an official BCCI media release stated. RCB's chances of making the top two received a major dent on Friday evening as the side lost the match against SunRisers Hyderabad by 42 runs. RCB, who were being led by Jitesh Sharma, failed to chase 232 despite getting off to a good start. Virat Kohli and Phil Salt scored 80 runs for the opening wicket. However, SRH won the contest quite comprehensively after losing the last seven wickets for just 16 runs. Earlier, SRH posted 231/6 in 20 overs, owing to Ishan Kishan's unbeaten knock of 94 off 48 balls. RCB has dropped to third place in the standings. The team has 17 points from 13 matches. The team will play its last league stage match against Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana on Tuesday, May 27. The side needs to win this contest and then hope either Gujarat Titans or Punjab Kings slip up to make it to the top two. However, a loss against LSG will ensure RCB's ticket to the Eliminator.
