Ex-Orlando Pirates defender on why the PSL lacks white players
Former AmaZulu and Orlando Pirates left-back Marc van Heerden has weighed in on the conversation about why the Premier Soccer League (PSL) lacks white football players.
In the 90s, most PSL teams had several white players; however, the number started to decline in the mid to late 2000s. Van Heerden, who made his debut in the late 2000s for AmaTuks (University of Pretoria), has shared his insights on why there has been a lack of white footballers in the past decade.
'There was Mike Morton, there was Brad (Grobler). You had Jeremy Brockie,' the former Bafana Bafana defender told Robert Marawa on MSW .
'There's definitely talent across all races in our country. I just don't think they understand that they have the opportunity.'
Van Heerden mentioned that some white players would often give up football and focus on other things.
'A lot of them that do have the talent give up. I knew plenty of players growing up that just gave up too easily.
'When I was at SuperSport's academy in the beginning stages, we had white, coloured and black players. I think it's a mentality thing, even at that age,' he said.
The former AmaZulu left-back retired at the end of the 2023/24 season, after nearly two decades playing professional football.
'Do I really want to become a professional football player? Am I willing to work as hard as I possibly can to become that? Do I love the game that much to be that?' Van Heerden asked.
Former PSL players Mike Morton and Matthew Booth last year also touched on the topic, explaining why white players opt not to play soccer as a profession.

Orlando Pirates news: Ndah, Mofokeng, Saleng, Zindoga
Orlando Pirates inundated with key injuries last campaign, look set to be reunited with Nigerian international Olisa Ndah. The highly-rated centre-back has been out since last September after sustaining a tibia fracture. Meanwhile, the arrival of Abdeslam Ouaddou has sparked rumours between the Buccaneers and Marumo Gallants striker Junior Zindoga. According to insiders, the Moroccan manager is keen to lure his former attacker. Serious question marks are lingering over the futures of Relebohile Mofokeng and Monnapule Saleng, who are both being linked with moves away. The latter hasn't featured since December 7 following salary demands Orlando Pirates deemed unjust. A four-month hiatus then ensued. No clubs have shown interest this offseason, but many believe he will move this winter. Meanwhile, Mofokeng has several clubs – FC Cincinnati, Al Ahly and Zamalek – vying for his services. However, his father, Sechaba, believes Europe is the ultimate destination. 'My biggest wish is to see Rele overseas in 2025/2026. I'm praying every day. I don't want to see him in the Betway Premiership again this season. I know God will answer my prayers,' Sechaba said '[Whether it's in] Spain, England, Netherlands, France, Denmark, Switzerland — Rele can play. I believe that with all my heart. Take him to Barcelona? He can play. PSG? He can play. Any country. I'll be happy — but not Saudi Arabia,' he added. 'Not yet. He's still young. He needs to compete in UEFA competitions. If he goes to Saudi now, he won't experience that. Yes, he'd be rich — but happiness is more important. You can have all the money in the world, but if you're not happy, it's worthless.' Orlando Pirates news: Ndah injury update, while Mofokeng garners attention
Orlando Pirates were forced to make do without centre-back Olisa Ndah for the majority of last season following a tibia fracture that had him ruled out since September. The Nigerian international is expected to be ready for the start of the 2025/26 campaign – however, it remains uncertain as to whether he will be fit for next month's pre-season tour in Spain, where the Buccaneers will face Bolton Wanderers, Pafos FC, Las Palmas, and Granada. Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates are presumably feeling inundated by Relebohile Mofokeng inquiries after MLS side FC Cincinnati were the latest to show interest. Egyptian giants Zamalek FC and Ah Ahly are also in the conversation. Mofokeng's father, Sechaba, who believes now is the time to head to Europe, is another reason why the Buccaneers will be somewhat expecting the worst this offseason.
