Watch: Pitch invader calls for ‘end of stray-dog massacre' at Club World Cup

Telegraph5 hours ago

A Peta activist broke onto Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia during Manchester City's opening Club World Cup tie to protest against the alleged mass culling of cats and dogs in Morrocco.
The invader sprinted on before play could resume after Jeremy Doku scored City's second goal against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca.
The man was holding a banner above his head that read 'Morocco: Stop shooting dogs and cats'. He ran towards the goal behind which the Wydad fans were congregated before being chased by stewards and security.
Eventually he was tackled to the ground before being led away, but the incident will be an embarrassment to Fifa and the local authorities given the potential security risk and with next year's World Cup also being held in the United States.
Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is campaigning against an apparent project that plans to eliminate around three million stray dogs in Morocco to keep the streets clean ahead of co-hosting the World Cup in 2030, along with Spain and Portugal.
It is claimed that the authorities are using public health and the fear of rabies, which is a risk in Morocco, as a reason for the killing of the animals which has led to protests and lobbying. Indeed, a British mother has died of rabies after being scratched by a puppy while on holiday in Morocco.
Yvonne Ford, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was 'scratched very slightly' by the puppy in February but only started displaying symptoms earlier this month, her daughter said.
The government has a 'trap, neuter, vaccinate and return' policy, but have been accused of culling the dogs and cats instead.

NFL sideline reporter Laura Okmin announces shock exit from Fox

NFL sideline reporter Laura Okmin has announced she is leaving Fox. Okmin has become one of the most recognizable faces on the sidelines of NFL games after two decades with the network. She told Front Office Sports on Wednesday that she wasn't forced out by Fox, but rather rejected their offer of a new contract. Okmin said: 'They sent me the contract. I printed it out. I sat there. It was just my voice saying, "It's time, this is it". 'I'm happy to say [my boss] was very surprised. I would have been very disappointed if there was any other reaction.' Okmin spent last season working in a team alongside play-by-play commentator Kevin Kugler and analyst Daryl Johnston. She joined Fox in 2002 and, over her 23 years in the NFL, became the third-longest tenured sideline reporter in league history. Away from her NFL duties Okmin launched GALvanize, a mentorship space for women in sports media. After working on the sidelines for such a long time, she now wants to switch her focus to her new passion of guiding the next generation of female reporters. 'Honestly, it's a tough job having to justify your job for 20 years. Having to fight for your job and having to justify it,' she added. 'It feels like there's a bit of dog years with that job.'

Pep Guardiola says referee's decision to dismiss Rico Lewis was ‘unnecessary'

Lewis was dismissed two minutes from the end of an otherwise satisfactory 2-0 victory over Wydad Casablanca in humid conditions in Philadelphia. The England international won the ball when he slid into a challenge with Samuel Obeng, but caught his opponent in the face in his follow through. City manager Guardiola was angered by the Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti's decision and later spoke to the official. Guardiola said: 'He thought the leg was a little bit high, but he was on the grass. He touched the ball. 'For the speed they go to touch the ball – for the Newton's theory your leg has to be a little bit higher and the other player was down. Rico had no intention. 'Rico is the person who never has intention to hurt anyone for his style of play. 'It was unnecessary, honestly, the red card, but the referee had a different opinion and he's the boss. They checked VAR, so we accept it.' The Lewis incident took the gloss off an otherwise professional performance in the Group G opener, won with goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku at the beginning and end of the first half. Guardiola said: 'It's so hot. It's not easy, for all the teams. We had good moments with many new players. 'The first game in the group stage is always really, really important. We started really well. After we had some problems, especially when we lost some simple balls but I saw many good things. Thank you for your support in Philadelphia! 🙌🩵 Next stop: Atlanta ✈️ — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 18, 2025 'It was the first game, now we prepare for the next one. Everybody will have to improve because it's so demanding, and it's going to happen.' Guardiola handed debuts to new signings Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki but it was Foden who proved their inspiration, pouncing on a rebound for the opener on two minutes and then setting up Doku's second. Foden endured an underwhelming 2024-25 campaign, but was recently stood down from England duty to refresh for the tournament. Quick off the mark.⚡️#FIFACWC — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 18, 2025 Guardiola said: 'He was really good. It was a good delivery for the second and the first, always he is there. 'We are pretty pleased and he was playing a position where he has to defend too as a holding midfielder.' City will now return to their training base in Miami before travelling to Atlanta for their next game against Al Ain of Abu Dhabi on Sunday (Monday morning UK time).
