Former NCT's Taeil appeals his prison sentence; his legal team calls for 'leniency' upon agreement with the victim - Here's what we know
Former member of K-pop group NCT, Taeil, has officially been charged on the counts of aggravated quasi-r***. The idol was found guilty of his crimes after he and his two accomplices admitted to the act themselves.
In recent updates, Taeil's representatives have filed an official appeal to contest the given punishment of three years and six months in prison.
Taeil appeals to the court for 'leniency' in punishment
On July 10, the Seoul Central District Court Criminal Division 26 ruled in favour of the victim and found Taeil, along with his two accomplices, guilty of aggravated quasi-r***. The court charged him for violating the Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Sexual Crimes Act.
While the idol has been charged and punished with 3 years and 6 months in jail, the prosecution had previously appealed for a 7-year-long sentence, along with employment restrictions for 10 years for all three individuals. They provided reasoning and cited the severity of the crime. As per BNT News, Taeil's legal representatives filed an appeal against the sentence on July 16, while the prosecution had already filed theirs a day earlier.
The other two individuals who have been charged alongside the singer have also already filed appeals for their cases.
The two will be fighting for the case and charges in the appellate court, with the prosecution requesting that the initial sentence be extended, whereas Taeil's representatives will be appealing for leniency in the matter. Earlier, during the first hearing of the case, they had also stated the matter as well.
The statement read that, 'He voluntarily submitted a statement to the police and despite difficulties, he reached a settlement with the Chinese victim, who also submitted a statement of non-punishment'.
Netizens have also shared their dissatisfaction over the length of the sentence that Taeil has been sentenced to. Many have been calling for stricter action against the former NCT member.
