Wisconsin lands All-CAA transfer guard
Wisconsin women's basketball landed Stony Brook transfer guard Breauna Ware on Saturday.
Ware joins the Badgers after an excellent 2024-25 season as one of Stony Brook's top contributors. She averaged 14.7 points, four rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals during the campaign, while shooting 43.6% from the field and 35.4% from 3. That output earned a place on the All-Coastal Athletic Association third team.
The 5-foot-7 guard originally began her career at St. Bonaventure in 2022-23. She appeared in 30 games during that freshman season, averaging six points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists on 45% shooting. Ware transferred to Stony Brook ahead of the 2023-24 campaign, though she did not see any game action during that sophomore campaign.
Ware is Wisconsin's fifth transfer commitment of the offseason, following Howard guard Destiny Howell, NC State guard Laci Steele and Southern Illinois forward Gift Uchenna and Missouri State guard Kyrah Daniels. That group projects as the core of the 2025-26 team, along with returning starter Ronnie Porter.
New coach Robin Pingeton continues to build the Badgers' roster after taking over in late March. The program experienced top-down turnover following the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, including the resignation of coach Marisa Moseley and nearly the entire roster departing via the transfer portal or graduation.

Braelon Allen, Graham Mertz, Hunter Wohler and other ex-Badgers make notable NFL debuts in preseason

New York Jets running back Braelon Allen, the former University of Wisconsin and Fond du Lac High School star, carried the ball eight times Aug. 9 against the Green Bay Packers in the preseason opener at Lambeau Field, racking up 33 yards in his team's 30-10 win over the Packers. Allen stands as the backup running back on the Jets roster, behind Breece Hall. It was one of several notable preseason debuts for former Wisconsin Badgers, with a mixed bag of results. Here's a recap: Hunter Wohler flourishes in first NFL experience Ex-Badgers and Muskego High School alumnus Hunter Wohler had a memorable debut with the Indianapolis Colts, leading the team with nine tackles (six solo) in a 24-16 loss to the Ravens. That was coming off a series of joint practices in which he reeled in two interceptions, including one against two-time NFL MVP Lamar Jackson. The seventh-round pick is listed as a backup safety on the Colts' initial depth chart. The Colts, a team that also includes UW alumni Jonathan Taylor at running back and offensive lineman Tanor Bortolini, will host the Packers for a joint practice session and another preseason game Aug. 16. Dare Ogunbowale still going strong for Texans Former UW running back and Marquette University High School alumnus Dare Ogunbowale is still going strong, entering his ninth season in the NFL and fourth with the Houston Texans. The special-teams ace had five carries and a team-leading 29 yards for the Texans in a 20-10 loss to Minnesota on Aug. 9. Ogunbowale, who signed a one-year extension in the offseason, had 30 carries for 112 yards last year in addition to his work on special teams, plus 19 receptions for another 198 receiving yards. Graham Mertz throws three interceptions for Houston Texans Former Badgers starting quarterback Graham Mertz, a sixth-round draft pick by the Houston Texans this year, played in five drives in Houston's preseason opener, and it didn't go well. Mertz threw three interceptions and completed seven of 14 attempts for just 28 yards. He also had nine rushing yards. Mertz threw only five interceptions over his two years at Florida, where he transferred to after leading Wisconsin for three years and four years in the program. The Texans, by the way, just signed former Badgers receiver Quintez Cephus. Tanner Mordecai gets a look for San Francisco Tanner Mordecai, the man who succeeded Mertz as quarterback at UW for one season, completed three of six passes for the 49ers in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, good for 21 yards. He also threw an interception. Mordecai is a longshot to make the 49ers roster out of camp. Matt Henningsen suffers season-ending injury Menomonee Falls High School alumnus and former UW standout Matt Henningsen, now with the Broncos, tore his Achilles during a joint practice, and his 2025 season is over before it started. He was slated for surgery early this week. The sixth-round pick in 2022 spent all of last season on the practice squad after appearing in every game his first two seasons in the league. Other notes from NFL openers involving Wisconsin players Waukesha North and Iowa State alumnus Will McDonald had one tackle for the Jets in the game against the Packers. Joe Huber got strong marks on the offensive line with the Vikings in their opener against the Texans. Likewise, Wauwatosa East alumnus (and ex-Purdue offensive lineman) Marcus Mbow got strong marks for his debut performance with the New York Giants. Second-year player Maema Njongmeta finished with five tackles and a pass breakup that led to an interception for the Cincinnati Bengals. Philadelphia linebacker Zack Baun, coming off a massive breakout season in 2024 and a contract extension to remain with the reigning Super Bowl champion, has been limited with a back injury. Chimere Dike (Waukesha North), who played at Wisconsin before transferring to Florida for his final year, caught one pass for six yards with the Tennessee Titans in his preseason debut. Packers Training Camp Practice News and Notes, 8/11: RBs return from injury

We got some good news on the injury front on Monday. According to Weston Hodkiewicz, the Green Bay Packers got running back Emanuel Wilson (knee), running back MarShawn Lloyd (groin), left tackle Rasheed Walker (groin) and cornerback Kamal Hadden (hip) back in their practice that was closed to all but the media today. Nine other players remain out of action, but at least four are trending in the right direction. The players still injured are running back Jalen White (unknown), receiver Christian Watson (knee), receiver Jayden Reed (foot), receiver Dontayvion Wicks (calf), offensive lineman John Williams (back), defensive end Collin Oliver (hamstring), cornerback Nate Hobbs (knee), safety Xavier McKinney (calf) and safety Zayne Anderson (knee). Watson, Williams and Oliver are still on the Packers' injury lists, as they have yet to participate in a practice since the start of training camp. Cornerback Isaiah Dunn (knee) has also been added to the group of injured players. Another bright spot, though? Cornerback Corey Ballentine, who dropped out in the Packers' first preseason game against the New York Jets, was at practice today, so it appears the team dodged that bullet. Now, let's get into the action on the field on Monday. Offense With Rasheed Walker still dinged up, Jordan Morgan got looks at left tackle in team drills today. Morgan took a big step in the right direction over the last week. He looked shaky on Family Night, but performed well against the Jets. His pass protection drew attention today, so hopefully this improvement continues. Another young tackle, Anthony Belton, got some first-team reps at right tackle on Monday. No one is expecting Belton to displace the recently-extended Zach Tom anytime soon, but Belton's mostly seen action with the second-team unit as a right tackle. The offensive staff has stated several times this offseason that their plan for the second-round rookie is to focus him on the tackle position this year. He might be next season's starting right guard, but we probably aren't getting a look at him there in 2025. Practice today didn't end on the usual competitive two-minute drill. Instead, it was a two-point showdown between the offense and defense. Per Mike Spofford, the first-team offense only converted one of three attempts, a completion to receiver Savion Williams. Tight end Tucker Kraft fell on one of the attempts, and the final play of practice was a Jordan Love interception that fell into the hands of cornerback Keisean Nixon. The second-team offense went two of two, though, with an Amar Johnson run and Malik Heath catch. Defense Per Packer Report's Andy Herman, defensive end Lukas Van Ness recorded at least four sacks today in team periods. For the most part, it sounds like the defensive line continues to look good in the pass-rushing department. Other individuals who received praise from the press on hand include Rashan Gary, Colby Wooden and Karl Brooks. Linebacker Quay Walker also participated as the starting middle linebacker in team drills today. Walker was held out against the Jets, so Edgerrin Cooper and Isaiah McDuffie received first-team reps in two-linebackers sets with the team on Saturday night, with Isaiah Simmons playing the third linebacker spot. In his press conference on Sunday, defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley stressed that Walker needed to get more live-action reps with the squad. The Packers will have joint practices the next two weeks against the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks. According to head coach Matt LaFleur, the plan is for the starters to get most of their work in this week in those joint practices, play backups against the Colts in the actual preseason game and then have the starters go against the Seahawks. Special Teams Irish kicker Mark McNamee got his first practice action on Monday after handling kickoff duties against the Jets. He was two of three on both of his series of kicks, a total of four of six for the day. McNamee isn't a threat to take Brandon McManus' job this year, but the staff has said that they're going to see whether McNamee can displace Australian kicker Alex Hale, who was let go with an injury designation earlier in camp. Apparently, Hale was injured outside of the facility. Last year, he was the Packers' designated international player, which means he didn't count against the team's 90-man offseason roster or the squad's 16-man practice squad. Green Bay has left the door open for Hale's return, depending on how McNamee performs.

Twins reinstate Byron Buxton from injured list to start series vs. Yankees

NEW YORK (AP) — The Minnesota Twins reinstated center fielder Byron Buxton from the 10-day injured list on Monday before beginning a three-game series against the New York Yankees, after the All-Star missed 13 games with inflammation in his left rib cage. Buxton was sidelined just before the Twins tore down their roster leading to the trade deadline. He was batting .282 with 68 runs, 23 homers, 59 RBIs and a .905 OPS in 85 games when he went on the IL, all team-leading totals and averages among players with a qualifying amount of at-bats. The Twins sent outfielder Carson McCusker to Triple-A St. Paul to make room for Buxton, who also has stolen 17 bases in 17 attempts. Despite the rib cage issue and a concussion that cost him time earlier, Buxton has been as healthy as he has in several seasons. He's on pace for the second-most games in his 11-year major league career, behind the 140 games he played in in 2017. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press
