Julien Baker & Torres: Send a Prayer My Way review – queer country steps out of a classic framework

The Guardian18-04-2025

Back in 2016, long before the current zeitgeist was in full finger-picking swing, Julien Baker – most recently known as one-third of Boygenius – and Torres, AKA indie singer-songwriter Mackenzie Scott, made a pact to collaborate on a country record. That Send a Prayer My Way has finally arrived is, in some ways, fortuitous, but also puts the pair in more direct comparison with their country-loving peers. Where artists from CMAT to Beyoncé are modernising the genre, Baker and Torres's musicality – from the pedal steel-laden shuffle of The Only Marble I've Got Left to the close harmonies of the rootsy Tape Runs Out – lands squarely in the traditional.
There are other ways in which the pair add more personal dimensions to the mix. As two queer writers, the female pronouns of the album's romantic protagonists feel defiant when nestled within such a classic framework. The turbulent story of Tuesday and a relationship blocked by parental homophobia, meanwhile, finds a perfect vehicle in a genre that prioritises pained storytelling. In 2025, there is still something subversive about telling these queer narratives via one of music's oldest traditions – even if sonically it can sometimes all feel a little country by numbers.

Pitbull review – like a children's party, but with loads of booze

Pitbull is trying to give over 20,000 people a language lesson. 'I want to teach you a little bit of Spanish,' he says to the crowd, about 90% of whom are dressed in Mr Worldwide cosplay of bald caps, aviators and squiggly hand-drawn facial hair. The phrase he's teaching? 'Yo no quiero agua, yo quiero bebida', which in English translates to 'I don't want water, I want a drink'. As people used to say: yolo. This is the vibe of Pitbull's Party After Dark tour, which returns to the UK for its second run this year. It's a relentless ride through the era of hedonistic and carefree EDM pop that sprouted up after the 2008 financial crisis, and given renewed economic uncertainty and horrific global events, it's unsurprising that people are still seeking escapism. Why shouldn't that be delivered by a bald man in his 40s known for rapping 'I saw, I came, I conquered / Or should I say: I saw, I conquered, I came'? Tonight, Pitbull – who has more listeners every month on Spotify than Beyoncé or Lana Del Rey – is like a cult leader: the audience are zealously devoted, and that perhaps explains why they're able to ignore the flaws. The set is regularly padded by dull DJ interludes, the main attraction disappearing off to change his jacket. The set list is chaotic, the band randomly interpolating The Final Countdown or songs by Guns N' Roses and Beastie Boys. And when Pitbull is on stage the sound is so muddy that you can hardly make out what he's rapping. He is magnetic, though, and it's easy to be seduced by indelible hits such as DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love Again, Feel This Moment, and line-dance jumper Timber. His frenetic, slightly cheesy performance style is like that of a children's entertainer, albeit for kids hyped on vodka Red Bull rather than apple juice. During his well-rehearsed chat, meanwhile, it's more booze-soaked motivational speaker. 'Life is not a waste of time. And time is not a waste of life,' he informs the crowd. 'Let's not waste any time and get wasted tonight.' The crowd wildly lap all this up. No one, Pitbull included, seems to care that as a package it's not particularly good. This show is about losing yourself, taste and quality be damned. As the man himself says, repeatedly: 'Dalé!' At the O2 Arena, London, 9 and 10 June

Beyoncé brings out surprise Renaissance hit and debuts custom Versace look as she takes to stage for second high-octane Cowboy Carter show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Beyoncé pulled out all the stops once again for the second night of the UK leg of her Cowboy Carter the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour, as she put on another electrifying show at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. The global superstar, 43, treated the London crowd to a slew of surprises, including a performance of one of her biggest hits and new incredible outfits. It marked Queen Bey's second night at the stadium, with the hitmaker set to hit the stage again on June 10, 12, 14, and 16, before heading to Paris for three shows. Opening the show, Beyoncé addressed the thousands of screaming fans: 'We're gonna have us a good time. Are y'all ready?' As the arena lit up with cheers of excitement, the hitmaker commented: 'I can tell this is going to be a show tonight.' Once again, her incredible fashion looks played a huge role in the spectacle, with the singer continuing to channel Western glamour with sparkly cowboy hats and boots aplenty. Beyoncé displayed a dazzling new look for Alliigator Tears, sporting a graphic Rodeo T-shirt, fringed gloves and a white skirt, boasting an American flag design and a daringly high slit that revealed her thigh-high buckled boots underneath. She also slipped back into her favourite daring fringe chaps and glittering bodysuit as she displayed her impeccable dance moves. After blowing fans away on her opening night in London on Thursday with 2022 hit track, Energy, Beyoncé had something else up her sleeve for night two. She had the crowd screaming in excitement, as she performed one of her most popular Renaissance hits, Break My Soul. Fans raced to social media to voice their gratitude and shock, writing: 'BREAK MY SOUL IN 2025 THIS IS HISTORY'; 'Oh BREAK MY SOUL the global solo hit you are!!!!'. 'hello all. BEYONCÉ DID BREAK MY SOUL?!??!?'; 'ENERGY STRAIGHT INTO BREAK MY SOUL???? i just time traveled to summer 2023!!!'. 'Just found out that energy and break my soul aren't on the set list normally so I got really lucky last night'; 'SHE DID BREAK MY SOUL WTFFFF'. 'she brought back the BREAK MY SOUL twerk just for me'; 'ENERGY AND BREAK MY SOUL!!?! THE RENAISSANCE NEVER ENDED.' 'That's a wrap on London N2! So many new looks and Break My Soul made its iconic return!'; 'WHAT???? BREAK MY SOUL?? LETS GOOO'. 'London won again! We got Break My Soul!!'; 'BEYONCÉ DOES ANOTHER SURPRISE PERFORMANCE OF BREAK MY SOUL, ICONIC'. During her mash-up of Ya Ya and Why Don't You Love Me, she had a moment to take in the adoring crowd, as fans chanted her ad-libs back at her. While she brought back her signature Renaissance World Tour move, the Mute Challenge, with the UK crowd showing they more than ready to take on the silent challenge. A stand-out moment of the night saw Beyoncé step out in a show-stopping Versace look, made in the fashion house's hallmark print. She first took to the stage in a breathtaking gown with a corseted bodice, huge draped skirt and matching knee-high boots, with a gold Versace Medusa necklace to complete the look. However, in typical form for the most-awarded artist in Grammy history, Beyoncé didn't leave it there, with her then whipping off the dress to reveal a pair of tiny leather shorts. And in honour of her custom looks, designer Donatella Versace was in the arena herself to witness it all. Beyoncé shouted out the fashion icon from the stage towards the end of the night, announcing: 'We got Donatella Versace in the house!' The 62,000 capacity venue will host all the singer's shows on the British leg of her tour before she moves to Paris and then returns to the US. She last performed in the UK in 2023 on the Renaissance World Tour, which saw her play five dates at the same stadium. While ticket sales for her 2023 Renaissance world tour in the UK sold out within minutes of being released it hasn't been quite the same this time around. There were still 539 free seats left in the stadium on the first London night, which holds around 62,000 people for concerts. However, the majority of the empty seats were in the restricted area with fans preferring not to splash the cash on a compromised view. While they had access to a screen showing the stage, the show and Beyonce herself were blocked by the sound and light system. Her UK stint comes after ticket sales for the US part of her tour were also sluggish. The ticket sales may reflect less interest in her country-tinged Cowboy Carter material compared to her dance-friendly Renaissance material. The singer–songwriter also may be struggling to get fans who saw her on her whirlwind Renaissance tour to come back just two years later, this time at even higher prices. Those prices - $200–$300 a ticket for some of the worst seats at her upcoming Chicago shows - may be also turning off fans. Over the past few months Beyoncé appeared to have drastically slashed prices at some of her shows in order to get fans to buy the unsold tickets. Some fans who saw her in LA were able to nab tickets as cheap as $35 before Ticketmaster's fees. The tour, officially titled Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour is in support of her album Cowboy Carter. The all-stadium tour, featuring 32 stadium shows in the U.S. and Europe, began on April 28 in California, and is scheduled to conclude on July 26 in Nevada.
