My daughter has decided to be off social media for now: Influencer's dad

Time of India2 days ago

Kolkata: "My daughter voluntarily decided to be off social media for the time being and vowed to be more careful about what she writes and speaks," said the father of the fourth-year law student who was granted bail by Calcutta HC on Thursday, a week after being arrested in a hate-speech case for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
He told TOI hours after her release on Friday.
"She is a smart and educated girl. She realised where profanity led her. I am certain she will learn from her mistakes and will make the right career choices now."
Although she was granted interim bail by a vacation bench on Thursday, she could only be released from Alipore women's correctional home on Friday afternoon following receipt and presentation of the court order and related documents before the jail authorities.
He said his daughter suffers from Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and kidney stone ailments and is back on medication immediately after the release as she was off medicines during the jail stay.
"The court allowed the medicines but as per protocol, medicines cannot be administered to undertrial prisoners in the absence of the prescription which we lost during our transit from Kolkata, Pune, and Gurugram.

The doctor advised her lots of rest and to take the medicines again," he added.
Speaking to TOI, her father said they were original inhabitants of Bengaluru who came to Kolkata seven years ago and started living in a complex off Bypass. "Since back home, she is speaking to her grandparents, relatives, friends, and cousins who were all very worried about her safety. Jail is not a desirable place for anyone, and our entire family was really worried.
Finally, we all can get some much-needed rest and sleep.
She has also been advised to sleep a lot," he said.
According to him, now that she is out of prison, she will focus on securing law degree. "She missed some exams last month which may impact her degree. We will approach the university soon seeking clarity and will plead with them to allow her to appear in the exams she missed," he said.
He, however, said they were still worried about her and the entire family's safety even after her release. "We are still in shock over the kind of threats we received. There were rape and murder threats and whatnot. But, as law-abiding citizens, we have faith in the police administration and will also cooperate with the cops in the probe in whatever manner possible," he added.

Protests intensify in Los Angeles after Trump deploys hundreds of National Guard troops

Los Angeles: Law enforcement officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Los Angeles on Sunday as they gathered downtown in response to President Donald Trump 's extraordinary deployment of the National Guard over the objections of the governor and mayor. The clashes came on the third day of demonstrations against Trump's immigration crackdown in the region, as the arrival of around 300 federal troops spurred anger and fear among some residents. By midday, hundreds had gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Centre in downtown Los Angeles, where people were detained after earlier immigration raids. Protesters directed chants of "shame" and "go home" at members of the National Guard, who stood shoulder to shoulder, carrying long guns and riot shields. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Canada is looking for skilled immigrants - New job opportunities are waiting for you! Canada Immigration Express Apply Now Undo After some protesters closely approached the guard members, another set of uniformed officers advanced on the group, shooting smoke-filled canisters into the street. Minutes later, the Los Angeles Police Department fired rounds of crowd-control munitions to disperse the protesters, who they said were assembled unlawfully. Much of the group then moved to block traffic on the 101 freeway. Live Events The presence of the Guard was "inflaming tensions" in the city, according to a letter sent to Trump by Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday afternoon. He formerly requested Trump remove the guard members, which he called a "serious breach of state sovereignty." Trump has said the National Guard was necessary because Newsom and other Democrats have failed to stanch recent protests targeting immigration agents. Their deployment appeared to be the first time in decades that a state's national guard was activated without a request from its governor, a significant escalation against those who have sought to hinder the administration's mass deportation efforts. Deployment follows days of protest The arrival of the National Guard followed two days of protests that began Friday in downtown Los Angeles before spreading on Saturday to Paramount, a heavily Latino city south of the city, and neighbouring Compton. As federal agents set up a staging area on Saturday near a Home Depot in Paramount, demonstrators attempted to block Border Patrol vehicles, with some hurling rocks and chunks of cement. In response, agents in riot gear unleashed tear gas, flash-bang explosives and pepper balls. Tensions were high after a series of sweeps by immigration authorities the previous day, as the weeklong tally of immigrant arrests in the city climbed above 100. A prominent union leader was arrested while protesting and accused of impeding law enforcement. The recent protests remain far smaller than past events that have brought the National Guard to Los Angeles, including the Watts and Rodney King riots, and the 2020 protests against police violence, in which Newsom requested the assistance of federal troops. The last time the National Guard was activated without a governor's permission was in 1965, when President Lyndon B Johnson sent troops to protect a civil rights march in Alabama, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. Trump says there will be very strong law and order In a directive on Saturday, Trump invoked a legal provision allowing him to deploy federal service members when there is "a rebellion or danger of a rebellion against the authority of the Government of the United States." He said he had authorised the deployment of 2,000 members of the National Guard. Trump told reporters as he prepared to board Air Force One in Morristown, New Jersey, Sunday that there were "violent people" in Los Angeles "and they're not gonna get away with it." Asked if he planned to send US troops to Los Angeles, Trump replied, "We're gonna have troops everywhere. We're not going to let this happen to our country. We're not going to let our country be torn apart like it was under Biden." He did not elaborate. Trump also said that California officials who stand in the way of the deportations could face charges. A Wisconsin judge was arrested last month on accusation that she helped a man evade immigration authorities. "If officials stay in the way of law and order, yeah, they will face charges," Trump said. Newsom called Trump on Friday night and they spoke for about 40 minutes, according to the governor's office. It was not clear if they spoke Saturday or Sunday. There was some confusion surrounding the exact timing of the guard's arrival. Shortly before midnight local time, Trump congratulated the National Guard on a "job well done." But less than an hour later, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said troops had yet to arrive in the city. Defence secretary threatens to deploy active-duty Marines if violence continues In a statement Sunday, Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin accused California's politicians and protesters of "defending heinous illegal alien criminals at the expense of Americans' safety." "Instead of rioting, they should be thanking ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) officers every single day who wake up and make our communities safer," McLaughlin added. The troops included members of the California Army National Guard's 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, according to a social media post from the Department of Defense. In a signal of the administration's aggressive approach, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth also threatened to deploy active-duty Marines "if violence continues" in the region. Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders said the order by Trump reflected "a president moving this country rapidly into authoritarianism" and "usurping the powers of the United States Congress." Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who lives in Los Angeles, said the immigration arrests and Guard deployment were designed as part of a "cruel, calculated agenda to spread panic and division." She said she supports those "standing up to protect our most fundamental rights and freedoms." House Speaker Mike Johnson, a staunch Trump ally, endorsed the president's move, doubling down on Republicans' criticisms of California Democrats. "Gavin Newsom has shown an inability or an unwillingness to do what is necessary, so the president stepped in," Johnson said.

Tax evasion a national crime, take stern action against fake firms: CM

1 2 Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday directed officials to act against shell companies and fake firms that are deriving undue benefits against the rules. He said that such acts were an attempt to misuse the facilities meant for genuine traders and the matter should be dealt with seriously. The CM, while conducting a high-level review of the state tax department, directed officials to ensure transparency in tax collection and adopt a policy of technological efficiency and strict enforcement. Calling the act of such companies 'unforgivable', Yogi said, "Tax evasion is a national crime that negatively impacts development plans and welfare schemes." Stressing that GST is a consumer-based tax system, he noted that areas with higher population density were naturally expected to generate increased tax revenues for the state coffers. He instructed officials to develop special strategies for zones where tax collection is below average. Yogi directed that information on suspicious firms registered under central GST (CGST) be shared with the higher authorities in Delhi for cancellation of their registration. He ordered in-depth departmental investigations for firms under state GST (SGST). Upon encountering anomalies, officials would be given a free hand to register a criminal case and prosecute such people accordingly. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pinga-Pinga e HBP? Such inspections are essential to ensure that genuine businesses can operate fairly and without interference." During the meeting, officials informed the CM that nearly Rs 18,162 crore was collected through GST and VAT tax components in April and May of the 2025-26 financial year. The target for the year assigned to the department is Rs 1.76 lakh crore. Appreciating the progress, the CM directed officials to achieve the target through regular monitoring. The CM praised the achievements of 14 zones, including Lucknow, Ayodhya, Bareilly, Agra, Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Meerut, Jhansi, and Saharanpur divisions, for achieving increased targets. In contrast, officials in Varanasi, Prayagraj, Kanpur, Etawah, Aligarh, and Moradabad were reprimanded for collecting less than 50% of the stipulated target. He said that a detailed report should be prepared covering the role of officials deputed in the low-performing regions and sent to the govt. He emphasized that revenue was not just a number, but the foundation of development, and every officer should carry out their duties with responsibility and sensitivity. "In areas with weak tax collection, additional, joint, and deputy commissioners should personally engage with traders to build trust, cooperation, and a sense of compliance among the taxpayer community," said Yogi.

Faster e-challans & fine payment over traffic violations in offing

Ranchi: The traffic department is all set to expedite the process of issuing challans and making payments faster in connection with traffic violations in Ranchi city. Moreover, a string of other measures are in the offing and will be implemented soon to smoothen traffic movement. While reviewing the traffic system of Ranchi recently, Inspector General (IG) Manoj Koushik instructed that challans issued to traffic violators should not take too long to be issued and must be dealt with on the next day of the rule violation itself. In view of the large number of traffic violations happening every day, he also directed that the unit vetting the e-challans generated out of CCTVs should be activated. He said that the assessment of the number of personnel required for the task should be determined at the earliest. IG Koushik also discussed methods to simplify fine payment with UPI being considered one of the modes. It may be stated that there are around 600 CCTVs across Ranchi city which are used to detect vehicles violating traffic norms and also generate e-challans. While talking on the issue, the IG further said, "The aim of the measure is not to punish people but to deter them from violating traffic norms in the future. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mix 4 Kitchen Ingredients, Wake Up Thinner Every Morning Health Now Undo I have also instructed the traffic department to carry out at least one traffic awareness programme every week. In Indore, there is a dedicated team which usually carries out two awareness programmes everyday." He added the repeat offenders would, however, face serious consequences. The IG also asked police to avoid manual traffic management as far as possible. He stated that traffic lights at inappropriate places should also be relocated. A plan is under way to improve road engineering of various pathways in the city, he added. Following the IG's instructions, traffic SP Kailash Karmali held a meeting with officials and representatives of the auto rickshaw association on road safety and security of women in passenger vehicles. He also stated auto rickshaw drivers should have a dress code and name plates. He added that traffic police would be stationed at bus stands, railway stations and airport from 7 pm to 11 pm.
