Faster e-challans & fine payment over traffic violations in offing

Time of India4 days ago

Ranchi: The traffic department is all set to expedite the process of issuing challans and making payments faster in connection with traffic violations in Ranchi city. Moreover, a string of other measures are in the offing and will be implemented soon to smoothen traffic movement.
While reviewing the traffic system of Ranchi recently, Inspector General (IG) Manoj Koushik instructed that challans issued to traffic violators should not take too long to be issued and must be dealt with on the next day of the rule violation itself.
In view of the large number of traffic violations happening every day, he also directed that the unit vetting the e-challans generated out of CCTVs should be activated.
He said that the assessment of the number of personnel required for the task should be determined at the earliest. IG Koushik also discussed methods to simplify fine payment with UPI being considered one of the modes.
It may be stated that there are around 600 CCTVs across Ranchi city which are used to detect vehicles violating traffic norms and also generate e-challans.
While talking on the issue, the IG further said, "The aim of the measure is not to punish people but to deter them from violating traffic norms in the future.

I have also instructed the traffic department to carry out at least one traffic awareness programme every week. In Indore, there is a dedicated team which usually carries out two awareness programmes everyday." He added the repeat offenders would, however, face serious consequences.
The IG also asked police to avoid manual traffic management as far as possible. He stated that traffic lights at inappropriate places should also be relocated.
A plan is under way to improve road engineering of various pathways in the city, he added.
Following the IG's instructions, traffic SP Kailash Karmali held a meeting with officials and representatives of the auto rickshaw association on road safety and security of women in passenger vehicles. He also stated auto rickshaw drivers should have a dress code and name plates. He added that traffic police would be stationed at bus stands, railway stations and airport from 7 pm to 11 pm.

HC orders action against 2 judges for letting accused go undefended in court

1 2 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court's Jalpaiguri circuit bench on Wednesday directed action against two judges — the chief judicial magistrate and the district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar — for not providing an advocate from legal aid to an accused in a drug case at the time of court production. Granting bail, Justice Krishna Rao held that the arresting officer violated Article 22 (1) of the Constitution by not informing the accused of the grounds for arrest. It is a fundamental right that an accused cannot be detained in custody without being informed of this. In ordering action against the two judicial officers, the court noted that a written complaint was made after the arrest on March 28, 2024, and after the initiation of the FIR, a case diary was started. The forwarding report submitted before the NDPS court was not served to the accused. At the time of production before the court on March 29, 2024, no advocate was provided and the court granted three days of police remand. After three days, the accused was produced before the NDPS court judge on April 1, 2024. He was taken into judicial custody, but the judge did not provide any advocate from legal aid to defend him. "This order be forwarded to the registrar general of the high court for information of the hon'ble Chief Justice and necessary action against the chief judicial magistrate and district and sessions judge (NDPS), Alipurduar for not offering an advocate from legal aid to the petitioner as at the time of production, the petitioner was undefended," the judge directed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo It was noted that even though it was mentioned in the written complaint, case diary and forwarding report that the grounds for arrest were explained, the state did not disclose any document or evidence proving the same. CM orders crowd control plan for Kainchi Dham fair as footfall triples in a year

Nainital: A record 2.5 to 3 lakh devotees are expected to attend 15 foundation day fair at Kainchi Dham on Sunday, prompting CM Pushkar Singh Dhami to order immediate and long-term measures for crowd and traffic management at the shrine in Nainital district. The fair marks the ashram's consecration and has grown into one of the region's largest religious gatherings. Dhami chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday to discuss a multi-tiered response to the sharp rise in footfall at the pilgrimage site. He directed officials to widen a 3km stretch from the Sanatorium to beyond the Bhowali petrol pump to ease congestion. He also called for a registration system and a visitor cap to be put in place to regulate crowd flow. Nainital DM Vandana Singh highlighted the need for long-term solutions and proposed a mandatory registration system along with a cap on visitor numbers in the future to ensure a safer and more organised pilgrimage experience. She said, "In earlier years, we saw around 8 lakh visitors annually, but 2024 saw a massive surge with 24 lakh pilgrims. We expect 2.5 to 3 lakh devotees to attend the fair and we need better infrastructure to handle this. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Hvor lenge varer 3 mill. kr etter fylte 55? SDM Tushar Saini shared two helpline numbers — 07302532213 and 05942-245543 — for public assistance. Officials urged devotees to use designated parking and follow all instructions to ensure smooth and safe proceedings.
