Faster e-challans & fine payment over traffic violations in offing
The traffic department is all set to expedite the process of issuing challans and making payments faster in connection with traffic violations in Ranchi city. Moreover, a string of other measures are in the offing and will be implemented soon to smoothen traffic movement. While reviewing the traffic system of Ranchi recently, Inspector General (IG) Manoj Koushik instructed that challans issued to traffic violators should not take too long to be issued and must be dealt with on the next day of the rule violation itself. In view of the large number of traffic violations happening every day, he also directed that the unit vetting the e-challans generated out of CCTVs should be activated. He said that the assessment of the number of personnel required for the task should be determined at the earliest. IG Koushik also discussed methods to simplify fine payment with UPI being considered one of the modes. It may be stated that there are around 600 CCTVs across Ranchi city which are used to detect vehicles violating traffic norms and also generate e-challans. While talking on the issue, the IG further said, "The aim of the measure is not to punish people but to deter them from violating traffic norms in the future. I have also instructed the traffic department to carry out at least one traffic awareness programme every week. In Indore, there is a dedicated team which usually carries out two awareness programmes everyday." He added the repeat offenders would, however, face serious consequences. The IG also asked police to avoid manual traffic management as far as possible. He stated that traffic lights at inappropriate places should also be relocated. A plan is under way to improve road engineering of various pathways in the city, he added. Following the IG's instructions, traffic SP Kailash Karmali held a meeting with officials and representatives of the auto rickshaw association on road safety and security of women in passenger vehicles. He also stated auto rickshaw drivers should have a dress code and name plates. He added that traffic police would be stationed at bus stands, railway stations and airport from 7 pm to 11 pm.

In some districts like Ranchi, Khunti, Loharadga and Gumla, the splinter groups of Maoists have a presence but their activities have dwindled considerably. The active groups are mainly criminals using the name of the rebels to extort money. Most of these anti-social elements are identified and actions are being taken against them. In my meeting with Ranchi police recently, I instructed them to ensure speedy disposal of public complaints lodged with the centralized public grievance redressal and monitoring system. This system will be on vigil in other districts, too. We are planning to give a copy of the inquiry report to the complainants if it does not involve confidential information. The citizens will have the option of disputing the report at higher levels. What are your instructions to prevent crime in the state capital? I have asked the police personnel to identify entry and exit points of Ranchi city and build infrastructure so that it could be sealed immediately when a crime is committed. So far, around 20 spots have been selected in this regard. We will set up drop gates at these places. The step will also enable regular checking, which will prevent inter-district and inter-state movement of smugglers and other criminal groups. Police stns turn into dumping grounds for seized vehicles
1 2 3 Ranchi: Many police stations in the state capital are now overcrowded with seized vehicles, including trucks, cars, and bikes, causing an acute space shortage on their premises. A case in point is Chutia police station. Despite having a small campus, the compound holds several vehicles which were seized for various traffic violations. With its campus now full, the officers are now keeping dozens of vehicles, including cars and trucks, on the road, causing traffic impediments. On Tuesday, there was a large traffic inflow in the Chutia area due to a nearby diversion, causing congestion. The seized vehicles stationed in front of the station intensified the problem. Talking about the issue, a local police officer stated, "Some of the vehicles are lying in the station for a very long time. We hardly have parking space for our staff inside the premise." An officer of Sukhdevnagar police station said, "Due to a shortage of space, we also have to keep one vehicle over the other at the station here." Seized articles are kept as exhibits of courts in various cases and can be disposed of only after the processes related to them are completed.
