Arizona State RB Cam Skattebo, 2025 NFL Draft prospect, sued by former teammate

Fox Sports07-03-2025
Arizona State star Cam Skattebo is one of the best running backs available in the 2025 NFL Draft, but he has a more pressing matter to attend to at the moment.
Mattheos Katergaris, a former teammate of Skattebo's at Arizona State, is suing the running back for over $300,000 in Maricopa County Superior Court on "one count of negligence resulting in injury," according to a recent report.
Skattebo allegedly "jumped up and down" on the back of a golf cart during a Sun Devils practice in July 2023, which resulted in the back seat collapsing and Katergaris falling to the ground. The former Arizona State offensive lineman also had to have surgery on a ruptured elbow tendon.
Getting in touch with Skattebo about the subject has been an issue to date.
"He's [Skattebo] been hard to pin down," Katergaris' attorney, Neil Udulutch, said about publishing the summons. "I have reason to believe he was in Florida preparing for the combine, and then I know he was in Indy. I don't know if he even lives in Arizona anymore. Maybe he's bouncing around hotels. I just don't know, so I was done chasing him. My hope is that he or his family will retain an attorney and help us out here, but otherwise we'll have to go that route.
"It's kind of an archaic procedure. It is definitely a last resort."
As for his football future, Skattebo didn't work out at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis last week but is coming off a monster senior season at Arizona State.
Rushing for a Big 12-high 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns on 5.8 yards per carry, while also reeling in 45 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns, Skattebo helped Arizona State win the Big 12 and reach the College Football Playoff quarterfinal round. Skattebo, who stands at 5-foot-11 and 215 pounds, finished fifth in 2024 Heisman Trophy voting.

Lack of Matthew Stafford Succession Plan Could Cost Rams Super Bowl Shot

National Football League Lack of Matthew Stafford Succession Plan Could Cost Rams Super Bowl Shot Published Aug. 15, 2025 3:48 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link CARSON, Calif. — Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay appropriately wore shades while addressing reporters after his team's joint practice with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday at Dignity Health Sports Park. Obfuscation regarding injuries is paramount during these dog days of training camp. And top of mind for McVay was the health of star quarterback Matthew Stafford, who has not practiced since the start of camp due to an aggravated disc in his back. McVay said that Stafford will try to throw on Saturday before the Rams host the crosstown rival Los Angeles Chargers at SoFi Stadium in their second preseason game. "Hopefully it responds a little bit better and I'll have more information for you guys then," McVay said regarding Stafford. In the past two years, McVay and GM Les Snead have retooled the team with a ferocious defensive front led by Jared Verse, Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske. Now as they're expected to contend for the Super Bowl after taking the Philadelphia Eagles to the brink of elimination in the divisional round last season, the Rams have pinned their title hopes on a 37-year-old quarterback with a balky back. If Stafford can't stay healthy, it's hard to see this team making any noise in the postseason — or even reaching the playoffs. And the team's failure to create a succession plan for Stafford could curtail its Super Bowl hopes for years to come. ADVERTISEMENT Stafford was expected to return to practice after a throwing session at the team's Woodland Hills headquarters last weekend. McVay said Stafford made 68 throws during that session and looked good. But the veteran QB did not participate in practice all week. When asked if Stafford might need surgery to fix the disc issue, McVay said that has not been discussed. The Rams and Stafford had extensive contract negotiations this offseason, during which the team gave him permission to seek a trade. Part of the team's apprehension in moving forward with Stafford is his injury history since arriving in Los Angeles. Last season, he cracked four ribs in Week 15. In 2023, he missed two games with a sprained ligament in his right thumb and played through a hip contusion. He missed the last seven games of the 2022 season with a bruised spinal cord. He also dealt with a concussion and lingering elbow issues. In the end, after Stafford entertained pitches from the Las Vegas Raiders and Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason, he and the Rams agreed to a two-year, $84 million extension. If Stafford misses time during the 2025 regular season, next up is veteran Jimmy Garoppolo. After sizzling in a joint scrimmage against an undermanned Dallas defense last week, Garoppolo struggled with accuracy and failed to find a rhythm in a joint practice with the Saints here on Thursday. The Rams were flummoxed by a New Orleans defense led by former L.A. defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. Sean McVay described Garoppolo's performance as "up and down." "One of my favorite things about Jimmy is if something doesn't go down the way we want or if we have a little bit of a miscommunication, he's great about being able to reset," McVay said. The Rams signed Garoppolo before last season, and he's back on a one-year, $3 million deal. Perhaps that's because he always played well against the Rams, posting an 8-0 record during the regular season against McVay. However, there's a reason why the 49ers and Raiders moved on from Garoppolo, and his ability to stay on the field is worse than Stafford's. Jimmy Garoppolo may be one of the better backups in the league, but it would be tough for the Rams to count on the 33-year-old journeyman to lead them deep into the postseason. (Photo by Jevone Moore/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) The Rams have had time to find an eventual successor for Stafford since making the trade with the Detroit Lions to secure his services four years ago. Since McVay took over as head coach in 2017, however, the Rams have drafted only one quarterback: Stetson Bennett in the fourth round in 2023. The 27-year-old Georgia product looks better in his third season, but he does not project as the long-term answer at quarterback for the Rams. Instead, McVay has instead invested in reclamation projects like Garoppolo, Blake Bortles, Baker Mayfield and Carson Wentz. The Rams have passed on using significant draft capital to select a quarterback of the future. Certainly their lack of a first-round pick for seven consecutive years from 2017 to 2023 was a factor. "F them picks" was the team's mantra after winning Super Bowl LVI in 2022. But this year, they traded out of the first round one pick after the New York Giants selected Jaxson Dart at No. 25. Other developmental quarterbacks available when Los Angeles was on the clock included Tyler Shough, Jalen Milroe and Shedeur Sanders. The Rams had a visit with Milroe during the pre-draft process. Last year, the Rams were reportedly interested in trading up for Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who went to the Raiders at No. 13. Maybe they should have been working to move up for a chance to draft Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix. The Rams have two first-round picks next year, so McVay could look to address the quarterback position at that time. But that doesn't help this team with Super Bowl aspirations if Stafford can't figure out a way to get back on the field and stay healthy in 2025. For now, McVay is counting on the tough-minded Texan to work through the pain and be ready for the season opener against the Houston Texans. "I don't really have much more information other than we're trying some different things that are hopefully going to be in alignment with getting him back out on the field," McVay said. The Rams need much more information soon. Eric D. Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury on Terry McLaurin: 'We Need to Get Guys Out There'

National Football League Commanders OC Kliff Kingsbury on Terry McLaurin: 'We Need to Get Guys Out There' Published Aug. 15, 2025 3:00 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link The Washington Commanders continue to come to work without their No. 1 wide receiver, as Terry McLaurin still hasn't agreed to a new deal with the franchise and isn't taking part in practice; offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury feels the two-time Pro Bowler's absence. "There hasn't been a ton of contact with him," Kingsbury said about his communication with McLaurin during his Friday morning media availability. "He's been here, but he's been working with trainers, so until he gets back on the grass, that's when we'll start building that back up." McLaurin, who turns 30 in September, is entering the final season of a three-year, $68.4 million deal. On the receiver front, the Cincinnati Bengals signed wide receivers Ja'Marr Chase (four-year, $161 million extension) and Tee Higgins (four-year, $115 million deal) to new deals this offseason, while the New York Jets signed Garrett Wilson to a four-year, $130 million extension, among other high-priced receiver signings across the sport. "I'm huge on walkthroughs, on practice, things like that, because until you get on the grass and actually do it and feel the timing, feel the depths, the routes and things of that nature, I don't know exactly how much you can get out of that," Kingsbury said. "So, I think we're kind of at that point to where we need to start getting those guys, when they're available, out there and jelling and seeing where we are as an offense." ADVERTISEMENT Last season, McLaurin totaled 82 receptions for 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns. He ranked 20th among wide receivers with a 79.2 overall grade, according to Pro Football Focus. McLaurin has totaled 1,000-plus receiving yards in each of the past five seasons, averaging 76.7 receptions for 1,063.2 yards and 6.3 touchdowns per season over his six-year NFL career (2019-24). Kingsbury is entering his second season as Washington's offensive coordinator under head coach Dan Quinn, with the franchise coming off a 12-5 campaign that saw it win a playoff game for the first time in 19 years and reach the NFC Championship Game for the first time since winning Super Bowl XXVI. Rookie quarterback and No. 2 overall pick Jayden Daniels won 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. Washington hosts Cincinnati on Monday night in its Week 2 preseason game. The Commanders open the regular season at home against the NFC East-rival New York Giants on Sept. 7 (1 p.m. ET on FOX and the FOX Sports app). "To me, time on task together on the grass is really the only way that you can continue to build," Kingsbury said. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Florida legend Tim Tebow included on AP's 100th anniversary all-time All-America Team

The Associated Press recently announced its All-Time All-America teams amidst the organization's 100th anniversary, bestowing one of the most prestigious honors in college football among a very select few. It should come as no surprise that Florida Gators legend Tim Tebow made the cut, but even the Orange and Blue faithful might be mildly surprised by which roster he landed in. According to the AP's latest lineup, the storied collegiate quarterback earned the First-Team spot under center, joining a star-studded group of historic greats. "Florida's Tim Tebow edged Texas' Vince Young (2005) for all-time first-team quarterback. Tebow won the Heisman and made the AP All-America team as a sophomore in 2007, his first year as the starter," AP writer Eric Olson offers. "He led the Gators to their second national championship in three years in 2008 and narrowly missed a chance at another when the 2009 team started 13-0 but lost to Alabama in the SEC championship game. He remains the SEC career leader in rushing touchdowns and touchdowns responsible for." First team by conference *Based on players' school affiliations at the time they were in college About the AP All-Time All-America team "Of the 25 players on the first team, five won the Heisman Trophy and 21 are in the College Football Hall of Fame, two are nominated for induction in 2026 and two are not eligible because they are not yet 10 years removed from their college careers," the article states. "A panel of 12 AP sports writers who cover college football selected the all-time team. It won't be, and shouldn't be, considered definitive. There have been far more great players over the last century than spots available. "For a player to qualify, he must have been an AP first-team All-American at least once. His professional career, if any, was not to be considered. Also, a member of the all-time team could only be listed on the side of the ball where he was named first-team All-America. All-purpose players could come from any position. "Voters were cautioned against recency bias, but it is notable that only three of the first-team selections played before 1970. Of the 12 players who were three-time All-Americans, only four made the two all-time teams picked by AP."
