D-backs send top prospect Jordan Lawlar back to the minors after struggles at the plate
PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have sent top prospect Jordan Lawlar back to the minors after he was hitless in 19 at-bats since he was called up May 13.
The D-backs — who have lost seven of their past eight games — made the announcement Friday before the first game of a three-game series against the Washington Nationals. Struggling right-handed reliever Kevin Ginkel was also sent to Triple-A Reno.
Arizona called up veteran infielder Ildemaro Vargas and right-hander Jeff Brigham to take their place on the roster.
Lawlar earned the promotion to the big leagues earlier this month after a great start to the season in Reno, where he was batting .336 with six homers and 31 RBIs. But the success didn't translate at the plate and he was also shaky in the field.
'This will enable him to go down, play every day, make adjustments and get back here as soon as possible,' manager Torey Lovullo said.
The D-backs also designated left-handed reliever Joe Mantiply for assignment. The 34-year-old was a 2022 All-Star and one of the team's main relievers for the past four seasons, but had a 15.83 ERA in 10 games this year.

Shane Bieber's second rehab start on Thursday brings hope for Guardians' rotation
CLEVELAND (AP) — Shane Bieber will make his second rehab start on Thursday with the possibility of the 2020 American League Cy Young winner rejoining the Cleveland Guardians rotation by late June or early July. The right-hander — who had Tommy John surgery on his right elbow last April — is scheduled to start for the Double-A Akron RubberDucks after throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings in an Arizona Complex League game on Saturday. Bieber, who turned 30 on Saturday, faced nine batters, allowed one hit and struck out five. Chris Antonetti, Cleveland's president of baseball operations, was pleased that Bieber was averaging 93 mph on his fastball. 'It was really fun to watch Shane just get back out in a competitive setting,' Antonetti said before the Guardians faced the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. 'He's worked on adding some complementary pitches or changing the way some of his pitch profiles look. So his changeup in particular had maybe more depth than it's had in the past.' After spending most of his time at the team's spring training complex in Goodyear, Arizona, Bieber is likely to remain in Northeast Ohio for the remainder of his rebab. The Guardians top affiliates are in Columbus, Akron and Eastlake, Ohio, which are all less than a two-hour drive from Progressive Field. The plan is for Bieber to throw up to 50 pitches again on Thursday before ramping things up. With the two-time All-Star likely to pitch every five days, it is possible his return to the rotation could occur between June 25 through 29, when the Guardians have a homestand against the Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals. 'We have a pretty good plan in place, but the one thing we want to make sure, especially with Tommy John, is that we're really deliberate in helping him get back to a point where once he returns, he's able to pitch for the balance of the season without issues,' Antonetti said. Wade Miley becomes a free agent after opting out of his minor league deal with the Reds
CHICAGO (AP) — Wade Miley has opted out of his minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds, making the veteran left-hander a free agent. Miley, 38, is coming back from Tommy John surgery. He went 1-2 with an 8.84 ERA in seven starts at Triple-A Louisville this season. Cincinnati had until Sunday to make a decision on Miley, who is looking for a starting opportunity. The Reds could have brought him up and put him in their bullpen. Reds manager Terry Francona praised president of baseball operations Nick Krall for giving Miley a chance to look around. 'To throw him in the bullpen to try to keep (him) — because if we have something happen, it's not good — but it's not necessarily entirely fair to him, I just appreciate the way Nick handled it with him,' Francona said. Miley, an All-Star with Arizona in 2012, is 108-99 with a 4.07 ERA in 310 starts and seven relief appearances over 14 major league seasons. He was 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in two April starts for Milwaukee last year before he got hurt. Francona said Miley could return to the organization if he isn't able to find a better home in free agency. Francona also said infielder Jeimer Candelario will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Monday. The 31-year-old Candelario is coming back from a lower-back injury.
