Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin held a review meeting with officials at the State Secretariat on Friday (May 30, 2025) to discuss steps for the removal of materials that washed ashore along the coastal areas of Kanniyakumari district from the cargo ship MSC Elsa 3, which capsized nearly 38 nautical miles off the Kerala coast on May 24.
Mr. Stalin held discussions with officials from the Departments of Revenue, Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Fisheries, and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board regarding the safe removal of plastic and other materials washing ashore in Tamil Nadu's coastal regions. According to the official release, though no hazardous materials have washed ashore on the Tamil Nadu coast so far, Mr. Stalin directed officials to ensure coordination among various departments and volunteers for the safe removal of the objects, and to conduct studies on both the short-term and long-term environmental impacts on marine life.
He also urged the public to report any suspicious objects found near the coast to the district administration or the police. Additionally, he directed the State Disaster Management Authority to continuously monitor the situation and take all necessary precautionary measures to safeguard the public.
Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam; Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Supriya Sahu; Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, P. Amudha, and other senior government officials participated in the meeting.

'Undermines democracy': Stalin criticises Centre over 130th Constitution Amendment bill

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led Central government over the introduction of the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, warning that the legislation, if passed, would undermine democracy and empower the Centre to arbitrarily unseat opposition Chief Ministers. In a post on X, Stalin accused the BJP government of attempting to 'defile' the Constitution and described the proposed amendment as a 'Black Day' in Indian democracy. 'The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform. This is a Black Day and this is a Black Bill. Thirty-day arrest equals removal of an elected CM. No trial, no conviction – just BJP's diktat. This is how dictatorships begin: Steal votes, silence rivals and crush states,' he wrote. The Chief Minister alleged that the move was a diversionary tactic by the BJP, which is facing allegations of 'vote theft.' He claimed that after being accused of forming the government through fraudulent means, the party is desperate to divert public attention. 'Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this expose. To do that, they have brought in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill,' Stalin said. Expressing confidence that the judiciary would intervene, Stalin said the bill would not withstand judicial scrutiny. 'This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by mere registration of a case,' he asserted. He further charged that the proposed amendment is aimed at intimidating regional allies within the NDA. 'This is a sinister attempt to intimidate regional parties in the NDA, whose leaders are CMs or Ministers in various States – 'stick with us or else.' The first move of any emerging dictator is to give himself the power to arrest and remove rivals from office. That is exactly what this Bill seeks to do,' Stalin added. The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, along with the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament. The amendment proposes that the Prime Minister or Chief Ministers detained for 30 consecutive days on charges of corruption or serious offences could be removed from office.

Centre has decided to defile the Constitution by turning India into a dictatorship under PM, alleges Stalin

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Wednesday strongly objected to The Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, introduced by Home Minister Amit Shah in Parliament, which seeks to provide a legal framework for the removal of the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Ministers of States and Union Territories who are arrested and detained in custody for 30 consecutive days on serious criminal charges. He said the BJP government at the Centre has decided to defile the Constitution and its democratic foundations by turning India into a dictatorship under the Prime Minister. 'The 130th Constitutional Amendment is not reform. This is a black day and this is a black Bill. This is how dictatorships begin: steal votes, silence rivals and crush States. I strongly condemn this Bill, which strikes at the very root of democracy, and I call upon all the democratic forces to unite against this attempt to turn India into a dictatorship,' Mr. Stalin said in a post on X. 'After the exposé of vote theft, the very mandate on which the Union BJP government was formed is in serious question. Its legitimacy is doubtful. Having stolen the mandate of the people through fraud, the BJP is now desperate to distract public attention from this exposé. To do that, they have brought in the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill,' Mr. Stalin alleged. 'The plan of this Bill is clear. It allows the BJP to foist false cases against political opponents in power across States and remove them by misusing provisions that treat even a 30-day arrest as a ground for removal of an elected leader, without any conviction or trial. This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by the mere registration of a case,' the Chief Minister said. 'This is a sinister attempt to intimidate regional parties in the NDA, whose leaders are CMs or Ministers in various States — 'stick with us or else…' The first move of any emerging dictator is to give himself the power to arrest and remove rivals from office. That is exactly what this Bill seeks to do,' Mr. Stalin added.

Stalin lambasts Bill to remove jailed PM, CMs, Ministers; Calls it "black bill"

CHENNAI: Lambasting the BJP-led Union government for tabling the 130th Constitutional Amendment Bill, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Wednesday described it as a "black bill." The Bill provides for the removal of the Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, and Ministers arrested on serious charges and remaining in custody for 30 straight days. Stalin further said that this day would be remembered as a "black day." Strongly condemning the Bill, the CM, in his post on X, said the Bill struck at the very root of democracy and called upon all democratic forces to unite against this attempt to turn India into a dictatorship. Stalin said the plan behind the Bill is clear since it allows the BJP to foist false cases against political opponents in power across states and remove them by misusing provisions that treat even a 30-day arrest as a ground for removal of an elected leader without any conviction or trial. "This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by the mere registration of a case," the Tamil Nadu CM said.
