
Afcons Infra shares: Chenab Bridge inauguration puts focus on this Shapoorji Pallonji Group stock
Situated at a height of 359 meters above the Chenab River and built at a cost of ₹ 1,486 crore, the bridge is 35 meters taller than the iconic Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was inaugurated on Friday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the Anji Khad Bridge and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link.
Overcoming the initial challenges posed by the remote, mountainous terrain of the Himalayas, transporting equipment and materials to the site was a major hurdle. Afcons initially depended on mules and horses to access the location before eventually constructing temporary roads to ease the movement of men and machinery.
As the iconic Chenab Rail Bridge garners global attention, one of the key contributors to its successful construction is Professor G. Madhavi Latha, a geotechnical expert from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, who was associated with the project for 17 years.
G. Madhavi Latha worked closely with Afcons, the contractor of the bridge, in the planning, design, and construction of the structure, focusing on the obstacles posed by the terrain. Her commitment to the project has earned widespread praise, with congratulatory messages flooding social media—from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu to Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra.
Across platforms, people are applauding G. Madhavi Latha's crucial role in making this engineering marvel a reality. Amid the praise following the Chenab Bridge inauguration, Professor G. Madhavi Latha took to LinkedIn to express gratitude and clarify her role. She credited Indian Railways and Afcons for the project's success, highlighting the contributions of thousands behind the scenes.
Downplaying media labels like 'the woman behind the mission,' she urged the public to recognise the many unsung heroes behind the engineering feat.
Meanwhile, she recently published a paper in the Indian Geotechnical Journal's women's special issue titled 'Design as You Go: The Case Study of Chenab Railway Bridge.' The paper describes how the design of the bridge has evolved continuously, with the overall structure, location, and type being the only constants to suit the geological conditions of the site.
The company has expanded its order book significantly in recent weeks, securing multiple new contracts — including a ₹ 700 crore order from Reliance Industries on Saturday. According to the company, this order involves construction work related to the Vinyl Projects at Dahej, Gujarat.
Prior to this, on May 30, the company was declared the lowest bidder (L1) for a water supply project covering 353 villages in the Dungarpur district. The project, titled 'Kadana Back Water (Mahi Dam) Package-1,' is valued at ₹ 463.50 crore.
Afcons Infrastructure debuted on Indian stock exchanges in November last year, with its shares listing at ₹ 426.00 apiece, an 8% discount to the issue price of ₹ 463.00, as the IPO saw lukewarm demand from retail investors.
Since its listing, the stock has remained volatile. At the current trading price of ₹ 447 apiece, it is down about 3.5% from the IPO price and nearly 21.6% below its recent high of ₹ 570.
Despite the stock's lack of clear upward direction, analysts remain optimistic about the company's growth prospects, citing its growing order book, strong track record in executing complex and unique EPC projects both in India and abroad, and stable financial performance over the years.

Indian company borrowing costs see steepest rise since 2022 on fiscal risks

The average yield on top-rated three year company notes climbed 26 basis points in two days through Tuesday, set for the steepest weekly gain since November 2022, data compiled by Bloomberg show. Yield eased slightly on Wednesday, slipping about two basis points amid thin volumes in the secondary market, traders said. Meanwhile, the 10-year bond yield has risen 11 basis points this week to 7.29 per cent, the highest since March. Rising corporate bond yields are clouding fundraising plans just as economic momentum shows signs of cooling. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to lower consumption taxes to cushion the impact of higher US tariffs has stoked concerns that the government may sell more debt to plug revenue gaps. The prospect has rattled investors, pushing volatility in sovereign debt to a three-year high on Tuesday. 'A lot of negatives have piled up,' said Ashish Jalan, head of debt capital markets at Arete Securities Ltd. 'Fiscal worries are rising, which is resulting in higher borrowing costs for companies and raising risks of being crowded out.' Dimming prospects of further interest rate cut by the central bank are also pushing corporate bond yields higher, Jalan said, as investors await clarity on how the tax changes will affect the economy. Even so, yields on three-year corporate debt remain 55 basis points lower this year, helped by the Reserve Bank of India's 100-basis-point rate cut and liquidity injections. Still, higher borrowing costs threaten to slow local-currency corporate bond sales, said Soumyajit Niyogi, director at India Ratings, a local unit of Fitch Ratings. Firms have borrowed a record 7.9 trillion rupees ($90.8 billion) from onshore bond market so far this year. 'Companies are likely to delay their spending decisions due to tariff uncertainty, geopolitical risks and to gauge the impact of tax cuts on growth,' he said.

FM Sitharaman briefs GST GoMs on need for sweeping tax reforms
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday presented to GoMs from states her government's plans for sweeping reforms in the GST regime that involves slashing tax rates and easing compliance burden for businesses. The GoMs on rate rationalisation, insurance taxation and compensation cess will over two days deliberate on the Centre's 'next-gen' GST reforms under which tax will be levied at 5 and 18 per cent rates. A special 40 per cent rate has been proposed on 5-7 items, including sin goods. GST is currently levied at 5, 12, 18 and 28 per cent. While food and essential items are either at nil or 5 per cent rate, luxury and demerit goods are in 28 per cent slab, with a cess on top of it. The finance minister's address to the GoMs was for about 20 minutes during which she elaborated on the Centre's proposal, a source said. She explained the necessity for GST reforms to the states, the source added. The group of ministers (GoM) on compensation cess was set up to decide on the future of compensation cess post the loan repayment period. Besides, the GoM on insurance was deliberating on reducing tax rates on health and life insurance premium. The rate rationalisation GoM was mandated to suggest changes in slabs and rates and also remove duty inversion faced by certain sectors. The GoM on GST rate rationalisation is scheduled to meet again on August 21. As per an SBI Research report, the proposal, if implemented, could result in revenue loss of about Rs 85,000 crore a year. For the current fiscal, the loss to revenue is estimated at Rs 45,000 crore assuming the new tax rates are implemented from October 1. The Centre's proposal once approved by the GoMs will be placed before the GST Council, comprising ministers from Centre and all states, in its meeting next month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced rollout of the GST reforms by Diwali. The SBI Research report estimated that the effective weighted average GST rate came down from 14.4 per cent at the time of inception to 11.6 per cent in September 2019. Given the current rationalisation of rates, the effective weighted average GST rate may be 9.5 per cent.

Govt approves procurement of 97 Tejas jets for IAF
The government has approved the proposed procurement of 97 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas fighter jets and six advanced airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft for the Indian Air Force at a cost around Rs 85,000 crore, people familiar with the matter said on Wednesday. The two procurement projects were learnt to have been given the green light by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, they said. The Tejas jets will be procured at a cost of around Rs 67,000 crore while the AEW&C project will cost the exchequer around Rs 18,000 crore, it is learnt. Second-hand Airbus-321 planes bought earlier from Air India by the defence ministry will be used for the AEW&C project that is aimed at enhancing the IAF's surveillance and signal intelligence systems. The procurement of the 97 LCA Tejas (MK-1A) comes nearly four years after the defence ministry sealed another deal involving the indigenously-built jet. In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for the procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF. The single-engine MK-1A will be a replacement for the IAF's MiG-21 fighters. The IAF is looking at inducting the warplanes as the number of its fighter squadrons have gone down to 31 from the officially sanctioned strength of 42. Tejas is a single-engine multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments. It has been designed to undertake the air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike roles.
