Hyderabad: Breaking traffic rules? Beware. Your fellow city residents are watching you.
In the last five months alone, traffic cops across the three commissionerates have issued 30,000 challans based on complaints raised by vigilant residents and collected fines of Rs 1 crore.
These 'tip-offs' were posted on the traffic police's social media platforms – X, WhatsApp and Facebook. The commonly reported offences: riding without helmet, jumping signals and wrong parking.
There are also cases of triple riding, wrong-side driving, cellphone driving and rash driving. Each of these were accompanied by photos and videos.
Some of the complaints brought to the notice of police by residents in the last 48 hours include blocking free left at Tarnaka X roads by a govt vehicle, triple riding without a helmet at Tank Bund, rude behaviour by a driver when questioned about driving on the wrong direction in Trimulgherry, and driving without a helmet while using a cellphone in Miyapur
"We have a dedicated team at the commissioner's office that monitors grievances received through social media channels and alerts officials on the ground.
Recently, we have noticed a surge in these complaints – especially regarding wrong parking in residential areas," said a traffic cop.
Records confirm this spike in citizen complaints.
In 2024, traffic police from the three commissionerates issued 50,000 challans (of the total 15 lakh), following public complaints. Cyberabad commissionerate limits alone contributed 44,000 challans. This helped cops raise around Rs 1.5 crore in penalties.

In 2025, traffic police have already collected close to 70% of that in less than six months. The total challans issued so far this year is around 20 lakh.
"Enforcement of traffic management faces limitations as the focus remains on maintaining traffic flow. That makes it challenging to monitor every violation, despite the CCTV coverage. Therefore, citizens' assistance is valuable in penalising offenders," said Rahul Hegde BK, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Hyderabad commissionerate.
He added: "In the last 17 months, we have raised Rs 36 lakh with their help. Upon receiving complaints, our team verifies authenticity by contacting complainants and reviewing nearby CCTV footage before generating the challan."

Police officers stand guard inside the premises of the district Malir prison, from where more than 100 inmates escaped (Photo: AP) A routine safety measure after earthquake tremors turned into a major security breach in Karachi, as over 100 inmates escaped from prison on Tuesday. Officials said the prisoners had been evacuated from their cells as a precaution following a series of mild earthquakes in the area, but chaos erupted when a group of inmates attacked guards, seized their weapons, and managed to flee. According to senior police official Kashif Abbasi, 216 inmates escaped from Malir prison before dawn. He confirmed that 78 of them had already been caught. Police teams were carrying out raids to find the rest. 'No one convicted or facing trial as a militant is among those who fled,' Abbasi said. The escape led to a shootout in which one inmate was killed and three security personnel were injured. 'The situation has been brought under control,' Abbasi added. How the jailbreak unfolded Sindh's home minister, Ziaul Hassan, explained how the jailbreak unfolded. The inmates had been moved out of their cells due to tremors. While they were still outside, some prisoners attacked the guards and fled the premises after opening fire. Prison Superintendent Arshad Shah said the escapees headed towards nearby residential areas. Residents reported that police later used mosque loudspeakers to warn them about the escaped inmates and requested help in identifying and reporting them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Sindh chief minister Murad Ali Shah made a televised appeal, urging the escapees to turn themselves in.
