Trump says he plans to double steel tariffs to 50%
WEST MIFFLIN (Pennsylvania): U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday said he planned to increase tariffs on foreign imports of steel from 25% to 50%, ratcheting up pressure on global steel producers and vowing to deepen his trade war.
'We are going to be imposing a 25% increase. We're going to bring it from 25% to 50% the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States,' he said at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The levy increase will take effect next week.
The steel tariffs, along with levies on aluminum, were among the earliest put into effect by Trump when he returned to office in January. The tariffs of 25% on most steel and aluminum imported to the U.S. went into effect in March, and he had briefly threatened a 50% levy on Canadian steel but ultimately backed off.
Under the so-called Section 232 national security authority, the import taxes include both raw metals and derivative products as diverse as stainless steel sinks, gas ranges, air conditioner evaporator coils, horseshoes, aluminum fry pans and steel door hinges.
The total 2024 import value for the 289 product categories came to $147.3 billion with nearly two-thirds aluminum and one-third steel, according to Census Bureau data retrieved through the U.S. International Trade Commission's Data Web system.
By contrast, Trump's first two rounds of punitive tariffs on Chinese industrial goods in 2018 during his first term totaled $50 billion in annual import value.

KENINGAU (June 1): After 29 years as a cornerstone of retail in Sabah's interior, the Milimewa Superstore in Keningau officially closed its doors on Saturday, May 31 2025, bringing to an end a chapter that held economic and sentimental significance for generations of local residents. First opened on 1 June 1996 by then-Keningau District Officer Amri Suratman, the establishment was more than just a supermarket, it stood as a landmark of progress, a community gathering point, and the birthplace of a now-iconic voice in the district, Gua Ah Siew. As emcee of the store's grand opening nearly three decades ago, Gua impressed many with his poised delivery, courteous demeanor, and mastery of event protocol. His eloquence in multiple languages and refined timing quickly set a benchmark for official ceremonies in Keningau and its neighbouring districts. Over the years, he became the go-to master of ceremonies for government events, cultural festivals, and private functions, particularly within the Chinese community, but also in multi-ethnic events across Keningau, Tenom and Tambunan. During a panel at the Shangri-La Dialogue, two senior colonels in the People's Liberation Army directed questions at Teodoro, asking whether the Philippines would serve as a US proxy in Asia or adopt a friendlier approach toward China. Teodoro thanked the pair for "propaganda spiels disguised as questions,' a line that received rare applause from those in attendance. He went on to lambast China's territorial claims in the South China Sea, saying a lack of trust in Beijing was "the biggest stumbling block' to resolving the dispute. "That deficit of trust, which I think any rational person - or any person that is not ideologically biased, with freedom of thought and freedom of speech - will agree with,' Teodoro said. He added that he couldn't trust a country that "represses its own people.'
