Machetes used in wooded-area hunt for Rowan County fugitive

MOREHEAD, Ky. (FOX 56) — New information was released on Friday about a fugitive who escaped from custody in Rowan County.
The Morehead Police Department issued a public safety alert around 5:45 a.m. Tuesday, May 6, saying 35-year-old Anthony Martinez escaped from the U.K. Saint Claire Hospital in Morehead.
In a Facebook post Friday morning, the Rowan County Sheriff's Office said Martinez was wanted for bank robbery and other charges.
Reportedly, the police department received information on Thursday that Martinez may have been in a densely wooded area near Triplett Creek.
They used machetes to cut their way through and spotted Martinez, giving him commands to get on the ground, the sheriff's office said.

Martinez reportedly ran directly into an officer, and at one point, he was able to slip one handcuff from his wrist and assaulted the officer, telling him he was going to kill him.
Other officers tried to get control of Martinez, but he continued fighting back, attempting to grab their weapons and pushing officers, ending up in the cold water of Triplett Creek.
'This suspect was approximately 6′ 2″, weighing approximately 240 pounds, and willing to do anything, including killing police officers, to keep from being returned to jail. I can only imagine what he may have done if he had encountered an unarmed resident,' Rowan County Sheriff's Office said on Facebook.

In the sheriff's office call said that, despite what the news release from the Morehead Police Department would make you think, the arrest wasn't normal.
'So now that you know 'The rest of the story,' if you see one of the officers involved in this arrest, do exactly what I did, say thank you! Thank you for going above and beyond, thank you for putting your life on the line to make sure a dangerous fugitive is back where he belongs!' the Rowan County Sheriff's Office said.

GOP House committee chair yet to issue a subpoena for Epstein files

A week after a House Oversight subcommittee voted to subpoena the Justice Department for records related to Jeffrey Epstein, the chairman of the full committee still hasn't issued the order. The delay stands in stark contrast to the subpoena Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky) — the House Oversight chairman — issued and signed within 24 hours of a similar subcommittee vote that compelled Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell to testify before Congress. And it raises questions about Republicans' willingness to hold the Trump administration accountable for its failure to release the Epstein files in the face of significant backlash from the president's GOP base.

Palm Beach Police arrest Wellington man on DUI charge after crash

A Wellington man has been arrested on a charge of refusing to submit to testing after Palm Beach Police officers suspected he was driving under the influence following a car crash in Palm Beach. The 47-year-old was taken into custody after the collision that happened about 1:40 p.m. July 24 on northbound South County Road at Barton Avenue, according to Palm Beach County Jail records. He was released from the jail the following day on $1,000 bond, records show. Officers who responded to the crash scene found the man sitting on the curb next to his white Audi, according to an arrest report. Three people were involved in the crash, and all refused treatment at the scene, Palm Beach Fire-Rescue spokesman Assistant Chief Joseph Sekula previously told the Daily News. The other vehicle involved in the crash was a landscaping truck, Sekula previously said. An officer could smell alcohol on the man's breath and noticed that the man had delayed responses and difficulty keeping his balance, the arrest report said. When officers tested the man's sobriety while at the crash scene, the man had difficulty keeping his balance, stepped off the line and lost his balance while turning, the arrest report said. When asked to touch his nose, the man slowly lifted his arms and did not touch his nose, the report said. At the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office's DUI testing facility, the man would not provide a urine sample to check his blood-alcohol level, the arrest report said. Two breath tests found that the man's blood-alcohol content was .011, according to the arrest report. That is lower than the .08 legal blood-alcohol limit in Florida for drivers over the age of 21. The man told officers that he had one drink that day, the report said. Kristina Webb is a reporter for Palm Beach Daily News, part of the USA TODAY Florida Network. Massachusetts police arrest six women in alleged multi-state burglary gang, 3 taken into ICE custody

Six Maryland women have been arrested in Massachusetts on charges including breaking and entering, as authorities allege the suspects were part of a multi-state, organized criminal group. The women — who had Maryland addresses and were between the ages of 21 and 42 — were also charged with conspiracy, possession of burglary tools and resisting arrest, according to the Norwood Police Department. Exclusive: Ice Issues Detainers For Alleged Illegal Immigrant Burglars Norwood Police responded to a report of a break-in at a home near Neponset Street in Norwood, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon. The homeowners said they returned home to find several women inside, and that after confronting the intruders, the women swiftly fled to a vehicle and drove away, Norwood Police said. Later in the day, an officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description of the suspects. A short car chase ensued, before the six women got out of their vehicle and ran on foot into a nearby wooded area. One suspect was apprehended at that time, according to Norwood Police. One officer later saw several of the women behind a business, who ran away for a second time after being approached. They were eventually caught and taken into custody. "Thanks to the coordinated efforts of on-duty officers, specialized units, and mutual aid partners, all six suspects involved in the break-in were taken into custody," Norwood Police Chief Padden said in a statement. Norwood Police, along with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Homeland Security Investigations, confirmed the women's identities. The six women were Mirabela Caldarau, 42, Jajela Chiciu, 41, Flavia Caldararu, 22, Emilia Sardaru, 36, Mihaela Ion, 33, and Elizabeth Sardaru, 21. Authorities found that the women were related and that several of the suspects had warrants from other states for similar crimes, according to Norwood Police. "A preliminary investigation indicates the suspects are allegedly part of an organized group engaged in similar criminal activity across multiple states," the Norwood Police Department said. "All are related, including the two males who arrived to post bail." The case is under investigation, and the Norwood Police Department is actively working with other jurisdictions.
