Inmate manages to escape from a Louisiana jail for the second time in a year
Tra'Von Johnson, 19, made his latest escape Thursday from the Tangipahoa Parish Jail, which has a history of jailbreaks involving a half-dozen inmates in recent years, the sheriff's office announced. Johnson had been awaiting a trial for his alleged role in a home invasion that left a man killed and a child injured, authorities said.
Authorities say they became suspicious when a member of the public called the sheriff's office shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, questioning whether Johnson was still in custody.
'Following an immediate headcount of the jail population and a review of Johnson's movements throughout the day, it was determined Johnson escaped around 4:30 p.m. when another inmate helped lift him over the perimeter fence,' the sheriff's office said in a statement.
Law officers are now searching for Johnson and also contacting victims and reaching out to Johnson's relatives and associates, the sheriff's office said.
In the summer of 2024, Johnson was among a group of four inmates who escaped from the jail over the Memorial Day weekend by crawling under a gap in a wall and then scaling two razor-wire fences. Three of the escapees including Johnson were captured within days, but it took six months to apprehend the fourth fugitive.
Manpower shortages, inadequate staff training and experience, a lack of supervision and insufficient head counts contributed to the escape last year, authorities said at the time.
In 2017, two brothers being held on charges that included attempted murder escaped from the jail's exercise yard and were recaptured the next day, WBRZ-TV reported at the time.
Tangipahoa Parish is about 75 miles (120 kilometers) northwest of New Orleans.
The latest Tangipahoa Parish jailbreak comes as state and federal law officers continue hunting for five of the 10 inmates who escaped from a jail in New Orleans. In that case, the inmates squeezed through a small hole after removing a toilet. The message 'To Easy LOL' was left on the cell room wall, with an arrow pointing to the hole.

The town of about 9,000 people, was founded by copper barons who profited off nearby mines in the late 1800s. A smelter stack that's no longer operational looms over the valley. Brown lived next door to The Owl Bar, said owner David Gwerder, who wasn't there during the shooting Friday morning. Gwerder told The Associated Press that the bartender and three patrons were killed and didn't think anyone else was inside. He also said he wasn't aware of any conflicts between Brown and any of the victims. 'He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. Brown's niece, Clare Boyle, told the AP on Friday that her uncle has struggled with mental illness for years and that she and her other family members repeatedly sought help. 'This isn't just a drunk/high man going wild,' she wrote in a Facebook message. 'It's a sick man who doesn't know who he is sometimes and frequently doesn't know where or when he is either.' With no sign of Brown in the white pickup or his home, authorities converged on the Stumptown Road area west of Anaconda by ground and air, locking it down so no one was allowed in or out. Florida CB Dijon Johnson won't face prosecution following arrest on felony gun and drug charges
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Florida cornerback Dijon Johnson won't face prosecution for two felony charges that followed a traffic stop in May, his attorney said Monday. Attorney Tim Taylor said the state attorney's office has filed paperwork confirming 'no further action' in the case. 'We have worked closely with prosecutors on this for the past few months and are pleased with their diligence and professionalism,' Taylor said. 'Dijon and his family are happy to have this matter behind them. Dijon is focused on his academic and football commitments and is excited for the start of the football season.' The Gators open fall camp Wednesday. Police in Tampa charged Johnson with two felonies, including possession of a firearm, and two misdemeanors in May. Officers said they pulled him over for running a stop sign and detected a 'strong odor of burned marijuana.' They said Johnson was argumentative during the traffic stop and refused to exit the gray Dodge Challenger, according to the criminal report filed in Hillsborough County. Johnson was removed from the car and placed into custody. A vehicle search found marijuana and 8 grams of synthetic marijuana inside a backpack. A black Glock 19 loaded with 17 rounds in a magazine also was found in the car, according to the report. Johnson entered written pleas of not guilty to all charges, according to court documents. At least 2 dead, suspect arrested after Nevada casino shooting
At least two people were fatally shot and at least three more hospitalized after shooting Monday morning at a casino in Reno, Nevada, officials told The Associated Press. The gunman who opened fire just outside the Grand Sierra Resort casino shot multiple people before being taken into custody, police said. The conditions of the victims were not immediately known, said Reno police spokesperson Chris Johnson. The gunman was being treated at a hospital, Johnson said. Caroline Ackerman, a spokesperson for Renown Regional Medical Center, said the hospital's emergency department received several patients with gunshot wounds. Reno police on Monday warned residents to stay out of the area. Multiple emergency vehicles, including several ambulances, responded outside the casino. The Grand Sierra claims to have the biggest casino floor in northern Nevada and sits just a few blocks from the Reno-Tahoe International Airport. It's also one of the tallest buildings in the city, with nearly 2,000 hotel rooms. Last fall, President Donald Trump held a campaign rally in the resort's main ballroom. 'My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation,' city council member Devon Reese said in a social media post.
