British and Irish Lions suffer major injury scare as Luke Cowan-Dickie leaves field in a neck brace after nasty blow to the head against AUNZ side

Daily Mail3 days ago
The British and Irish Lions ' emphatic 48-0 win over an Invitational Australia and New Zealand XV on Saturday was overshadowed by a worrying injury to hooker Luke Cowan-Dickie.
The match in Adelaide was brought to a brief halt as medics rushed to attend to the 32-year-old after he appeared to take a blow to the head while attempting to tackle Lukhan Salakaia-Loto.
Cowan-Dickie remained motionless on the turf before being placed in a neck brace and carried from the field on a cart.
Head coach Andy Farrell and his staff now face an anxious wait ahead of next week's first Test against Australia, with Cowan-Dickie expected to undergo mandatory concussion protocols.
Cowan-Dickie appeared to have been knocked unconscious initially.
But there was a ripple of relief among the travelling support when he was later seen waving to the crowd as he left the field.
Another poor tackle technique. Looks like a bad head knock. pic.twitter.com/qiexx6MwjX

Cowan-Dickie was also spotted walking unaided near the tunnel shortly after half-time — a promising sign, though it remains unclear whether he will play any further part in the tour.
Sale's experienced front-rower had been fancied to start the series opener, but his injury could open the door for Ronan Kelleher, who came on as his replacement and scored one of the Lions' eight tries.
Despite the injury concern, it was a dominant performance from the Lions, who ran in tries through Duhan van der Merwe, Ben White, Scott Cummings, and others to seal a comprehensive shutout in their penultimate warm-up fixture.

'Super proud' Burke hopes Scots are more in tune against Samoa

Fergus Burke will be hoping his rendition of "Eda Sa Qaqa" proves prophetic as the Saracens fly-half looks to fulfil his "burning desire" to recover from a debut defeat in a Scotland New Zealand-born 25-year-old chose the Fijian song, which translates as "We Have Overcome", as his initiation piece after Friday's 29-14 loss in the South Pacific Friday, he hopes to turn the tables on another rugby nation he knows well, Samoa, as Scotland end their summer tour at Ellis Park in the land of his birth."It was a super proud day for me and my family to get my first international cap for Scotland," he said. "But obviously we didn't get the result we were after, so it was tainted a little bit and it was a weird one - I didn't know how to feel really."Immensely proud but got a bit of a burning desire to get the right result this week."Burke said that, despite the defeat, it "was super special" to live out his childhood "dream", hearing "Flower Of Scotland" before the game and being presented with his first cap by captain Rory Darge."I even had to sing a song in the after-match, which was entertaining," he said."I wasn't expecting it at all. I wasn't given a heads up."Explaining his choice of a hymn particularly associated with the Fijian rugby team, he added: "So I went for a Fijian song so the Fijian community could join in and help me. "I think I did the first line of the song and then let them take over."

Lions winger Hansen a doubt for series-opener against Australia

MELBOURNE, July 15 (Reuters) - British & Irish Lions winger Mack Hansen is a doubt for the series-opening test against Australia on Saturday following a foot injury sustained in the tour match against the Australia-New Zealand invitational XV. Hansen did not participate in full training on Tuesday, Lions staff confirmed, a day after Scotland winger Darcy Graham was brought into the Lions squad from New Zealand. "He hurt his foot in the game, I don't think it is anything serious but he was managed today," Lions assistant coach Richard Wigglesworth told British media. "Hopefully he will be fully integrated pretty quickly. It is nothing that we are overly concerned about but we need to make sure we have enough numbers at training. "But it doesn't look too serious. A doubt is anyone who didn't train fully today, but he's definitely not ruled out." Hansen adds to the Lions' backline concerns following injuries to fullback Blair Kinghorn and centre Garry Ringrose. Fullback Elliot Daly left Australia after being ruled out of the series with a fractured arm. Hugo Keenan, who started in the 48-0 thumping of AUNZ at Adelaide Oval, is expected to start at fullback for the Lions, with Marcus Smith able to provide cover from the bench. Flyhalf/centre Owen Farrell is another midfield option for head coach and father Andy Farrell, who already has Bundee Aki, Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones in his squad. Owen Farrell was solid in his 30-minute cameo at inside centre against AUNZ, and Wigglesworth said he was enjoying working with the former England captain. "He's been great, as we knew he would be. Not everyone did, but we knew," said Wigglesworth. "You all know how good he is, the influence he has, his knowledge and how he helps other people get better. "He's the influential Owen that we know and love."

Australia's 'hottest footy WAG' hated living in Adelaide. Now she's moving away - but her big announcement casts a shadow over her romance with AFL star

Australia's hottest footy WAG is on the move, but will her AFL star boyfriend be able to follow her? Port Adelaide star Ivan Soldo will have a big decision to make in the coming off-season, with his glamorous partner Chelsea Becirevic announcing she's bailing on South Australia. Soldo began dating the influencer in 2022, and they soon became one of the most visible AFL couples as their public profiles grew. However, their future seems uncertain, with Becirevic revealing she is leaving Adelaide and moving to Melbourne in the next month. Chelsea posted a video to her Instagram story with the caption 'Melbourne, Victoria, Australia' with key and house emojis. The video shows an upmarket property in Melbourne, with Soldo comfortably sitting in a chair and giving it his seal of approval. She added: 'Moving back to Melb in a month! Please DM me your fave places in South Yarra/Prahan [sic] or around that area for ... brows/lashes, laser, botox/injectables, nails.' However, Soldo is currently contracted to the Port Adelaide Football Club until the end of the 2026 AFL season and is pushing hard for a return to first grade. He was named in Port Adelaide's extended AFL squad last weekend and then dominated for the Magpies in the second-tier SANFL with 36 hitouts along with six clearances and six tackles. Further complicating the move, Chelsea has joined subscription platform Fanfix to share exclusive content and grow her brand as she prepares to launch a fashion label with Soldo later this year. Chelsea previously worked as a flight attendant in Dubai, saying that she wanted to get out of the City of Churches. 'He [Soldo] had to move to Adelaide for his career and tbh it's been a struggle for me,' she told her Instagram followers in May last year. 'It [living in Adelaide] is just not for me permanently. Temporarily it's fine. But long term in aus I think Melbourne or Gold Coast are for me... maybe even Syd.' However, she quit her airline job in September 2024 to move back to Australia and support Soldo in Adelaide. The couple faced intense media scrutiny in 2024 when Soldo requested a trade from Port Adelaide just one year into his contract, amid speculation that Chelsea's dissatisfaction with life in Adelaide was a factor. Chelsea publicly denied those rumours, writing on Instagram that she had been unfairly blamed for her partner's career decisions and that it 'wasn't anyone's business'. Their relationship milestone of moving into their first home together in Adelaide was widely covered as a counter to the split rumours and seen as proof of commitment. Soldo's absence from Port Adelaide's Best and Fairest awards night in late 2024 attracted criticism, including suggestions that he was being disrespectful to teammates and club tradition. He defended his absence by stating he was best man at his friend's wedding - an excuse fully supported by the club - and took aim at critics like Nathan Buckley and Kane Cornes for questioning his character. Soldo also spoke out against harassment directed at Chelsea, calling for an end to the 'bullying' and 'backwards narrative' that positioned her at the centre of the off‑field drama. The couple have made a long-distance relationship work before, when Chelsea worked overseas while Ivan was in Adelaide. The ruckman previously asked for a trade back to Victoria in 2024, but the request was knocked back. Power forward Mitch Georgiades previously said the club did not hold grudges over his failed attempt to leave. 'No, not at all, it happens every year, there's people come and go,' Georgiades said. 'I don't think there's any grudges or anything like that can be held, so nice to have him back. 'It hasn't been addressed at all - nothing. He has slotted back in nicely which is good.'
