Crypto exchange Kraken debuts peer-to-peer payments app Krak

CTV News4 hours ago

NEW YORK — Crypto exchange Kraken on Thursday launched a peer-to-peer payments app that enables users to send and receive funds in both cryptocurrency and fiat currency - across more than a hundred countries.
The move is a bid to expand Kraken's offerings beyond its digital asset trading business, and puts the firm in competition with PayPal, Venmo and Block's CashApp.
'We're able to move money across borders right off the bat, because that's what we do from a trading perspective in our venues, and we've actually already spent over 10 years building out that system for money transmitter licenses... in all the jurisdictions,' said Arjun Sethi, co-CEO of Kraken, in an interview with Reuters.
'You have to do that as an exchange anyways, and so what we realized is that our customers just wanted to do more with their money.'
Crypto exchanges such as Kraken are increasingly signaling an interest in expanding outside of the digital asset trading that initially became popular with retail investors. Kraken said last month that it is launching tokens of U.S. equities, called xStocks, in select markets outside the United States.
Krak users will have a dedicated spend account and will be able to instantly send and request payments across 300 different assets, including crypto and local currencies, the company said in a press release. Crypto transfers will be made using blockchain technology, while Kraken will make cash transfers internally without using external banking infrastructure.
Kraken plans to launch a series of products through Krak in the future, including physical and virtual cards as well as pay-in-advance services like loans, the company said.

Alberta company at the centre of corruption allegations calls for release of audit

Aerial shot of the Alberta legislature on Monday, May 26, 2025. (Cam Wiebe/CTV News Edmonton) An Alberta company swept up in allegations of government corruption says it's being further harmed by the suppression of a report it believes will exonerate them. Medical supply company MHCare Medical is calling on the province's front-line health provider to release an audit into health contracts commissioned by its former chief executive officer. MHCare believes the audit from former Alberta Health Services head Athana Mentzelopoulos may provide concrete proof allegations against its CEO are baseless. Mentzelopoulos is suing Premier Danielle Smith's government for wrongful dismissal, claiming she was fired for looking into questionable, overpriced contracts. MHCare is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit, but contracts it had with AHS were part of the examination by a law firm that is referenced in court documents. The province has denied any wrongdoing, arguing in court documents that Mentzelopoulos was fired for poor job performance and for dragging her feet on health-care reforms. The contracts are the focus of three investigations, and MHCare says the repeated delays are unfair as the allegations tarnish their reputation and leave CEO Sam Mraiche with no chance to clear his name. Why Circle Internet Stock Is Soaring Today

Shares of Circle Internet Group (NYSE: CRCL) are rising today, up 10.8% as of 1:39 p.m. ET. The jump comes as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) and Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) were up 0.7% and 0.8%, respectively. The company, which went public earlier this month, is the sole issuer of USDC, one of the most popular stablecoins on the market. Circle stock saw a boost today from news that the Trump administration will allow borrowers to use crypto as assets on their mortgage applications. Trump admin wants crypto on mortgage applications The Federal Housing Finance Agency has ordered Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to formally consider cryptocurrency as an asset in mortgage loan risk assessments. The directive allows borrowers to retain crypto stored on U.S.-regulated exchanges without converting it to dollars before closing. The move is a continuation of Trump's pro-crypto agenda, and crypto-related stocks like Circle received a lift. There are some hidden issues with Circle Investors should keep a few key risks in mind. First, Circle's revenue is closely tied to interest rates, which are currently elevated. If the Federal Reserve lowers rates as anticipated later this year, Circle's top line could be cut by about 10% for every 0.25% rate cut. Second, about half of Circle's revenue goes to Coinbase due to their partnership -- an arrangement that leaves Circle reliant on decisions made outside its own business. With a market cap nearing $55 billion and $1.7 billion in sales last year, Circle stock already has a lot of future growth baked in. I would avoid Circle stock.
