Former John A Woods depot on the market for €950,000

Irish Examiner15-05-2025
A FORMER John A Wood depot in Carrigrohane suitable as a builder's compound, or for storage or parking, is on the market with a guide price of €950,000.
The 2.26ha (5.58a) land parcel, east of Inchigaggin Lane, is being sold by a private vendor who bought the property from John A Wood many years ago.
The site has been used from time to time by Cork City Fire Brigade for training purposes and most recently as a yard for storage purposes.
Located in a 'landscape preservation zone' in the Cork City Development Plan 2022, there's a presumption against development. However selling agent Ed Hanafin of Cohalan Downing points out that, as per the development plan 'there may be scope for development to enable existing occupiers to adapt existing buildings to their evolving requirements, providing that the form or nature of development is compatible with the landscape character of the area. This might include a change of use or minor extensions'.
Currently, there is is a small building of approximately 53.23 sq m (573 sq ft) on the site.
The land, laid out with a roadway, hardstanding and grassed/overgrown areas is just beyond Victoria Cross and in a good location for travelling west. It's close to the city centre too (4km away) and has good access to the N40 South Ring Road and to Blarney. Once the proposed Northern Distributor Road is realised further down the line, it will link the Carrigrohane Road to Glanmire, opening up access to the city's northern suburbs and to the N20 Limerick Road. However while the preferred route has been chosen for the new road, it will be a number of years before the project is delivered.
Mr Hanafin said current interest in the site is from parties with hardstanding/storage requirements. A number of sports' clubs have playing pitches in the area, but do not feature so far among those enquiring.
The agent said the land "may have medium to long term development potential, subject to a change in zoning and planning permission'.
The property is on the southern side of Carrigrohane Road, across from the end of the Lee Fields walkway. It's adjacent to Grassland Agro industrial fertliser plant, while the Kingsley Hotel, County Hall and the large Bottle Works purpose-built student accommodation development are just to the east.

Wellness and Walkability Shape European Travel Preferences, Agoda Advises Hoteliers

Among top destinations, Malaysia shows largest year-on-year search growth at 20% in Agoda's Europe to Asia Summer Travel Trends Report SINGAPORE, Aug. 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital travel platform Agoda's latest Europe to Asia Summer Travel Trends data shows an increase in European traveler interest for Asian destinations. Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, and Vietnam top the list of most searched destinations for summer 2025, with interest driven by travelers from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, and the Netherlands. Notably, search interest is also rising among travelers from Greece (+23%), Turkey (+21%), and Poland (+17%). This growth in interest aligns with a broader shift in European traveler preferences, who are increasingly seeking authentic, immersive experiences in striking locations from exploring vibrant neighborhoods, enjoying wellness retreats and sampling local cuisine to discovering cultural landmarks on foot. Agoda's guide to Asia's top cities to explore on foot highlights walkable hidden gems that make many of these trending destinations celebrated for their ease of accessibility. Hotels in walkable cities like Chiang Khan (Thailand), Melaka (Malaysia), Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam) can stand out further by emphasizing their proximity to city centers, historic neighborhoods, and local attractions. For Asian hoteliers, the growing appeal of walkable cities presents a timely opportunity to tailor offerings and capture the attention of Europe's next wave of Asia-bound guests. Properties can highlight walkability by offering curated street tour maps and guided walking tours to enhance guest experience. Accommodation providers can make it easier for guests to access local cuisine, hidden cafés, and cultural landmarks at every turn. Wellness tourism continues to expand across Asia, with Mordor Intelligence reporting that the market is projected to reach USD 156 billion in 2025. Today's travelers are increasingly seeking destinations that not only offer convenience and cultural immersion, but also opportunities to recharge and focus on their wellbeing. Hoteliers can attract discerning guests by offering spa packages, yoga classes, or digital detox retreats, and by bundling wellness experiences with room rates. Chiang Khan in Thailand, for instance, is an ideal example of a wellness-focused destination, with its car-free walking street, peaceful sunrise views over the Mekong, and opportunities for mindful experiences. These thoughtful touches not only appeal to wellness-seeking travelers but also enhance the overall guest experience. "As European travel patterns evolve, the real opportunity for hotels lies in anticipating not just where guests want to go, but how they want to experience those destinations," said Andrew Smith, Senior Vice President, Supply at Agoda. "By leveraging data-driven insights, hoteliers can move beyond traditional offerings to curate experiences that reflect the growing demand for wellness, walkability, and local authenticity. This approach positions them to capture interest from European travelers and build stronger, more resilient guest relationships for the long term." With over 6 million holiday properties, more than 130,000 flight routes, and over 300,000 activities, Agoda provides endless possibilities for creating unforgettable travel experiences. Sparks star Kelsey Plum stuns Wings, ruins historic night for Paige Bueckers with buzzer-beater

Kelsey Plum played it perfectly on Wednesday night, and spoiled what was a historic outing from Paige Bueckers. The Los Angeles Sparks star, with her team down by a single point, drove through the lane and hit a floating bank-shot as the buzzer sounded to lift her team to the 81-80 win over the Dallas Wings — which set off a massive celebration at Arena. Bueckers still finished with 44 points in the loss for Dallas. That matched the WNBA's single-game rookie record, which was first set by Cynthia Cooper. It's also the highest-scoring night from any player in the league this season, and the first 40-point night in WNBA history from a player that shot at least 80% from the field. Bueckers went a wild 17-of-21 shooting and a perfect 4-of-4 from behind the arc. This post will be updated with more information shortly.

It's GCSE results day - and some students can get theirs via an app this year

Pupils in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland are getting their GCSE results today - and tens of thousands of them can do so via an app for the first time. More than 95,000 youngsters in Greater Manchester and the West Midlands will be able to find out how they did via "Education Record" on their smartphone. The government is trialling the app ahead of a national rollout. It's hoped that by bringing together exam results and other education records, like certificates, into one place, it'll help pupils when they're applying for university, apprenticeships, and jobs. Results will be available on the app from 11am, though students can also get them earlier from their school in the normal way from 8am. This year's results day is also significant as most pupils who took their GCSEs this summer were in Year 6 when schools were closed during lockdown, disrupting their transition to secondary school. Exam aids have been provided to maths, physics, and combined science pupils since 2022 to limit the impact the pandemic had on learning, and will remain in place through to 2027. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said this year's cohort had shown "remarkable resilience", but said today's results would still "expose the inequalities entrenched in our education system". She said she was determined to "break the link between background and success once and for all". More than a fifth (21.8%) of GCSE entries were awarded the top grades last year, slightly down from 22% in 2023. In 2019, the final year before the pandemic, it stood at 20.8%. What's the grading system? In England, GCSEs are graded using a numerical system from 9 (the highest mark) to 1. Seven and above is roughly equivalent to an A and above. The numerical system has been in place for all subjects since 2020. Read more from Sky News: Northern Ireland uses a nine-category grade scale of A* to G (including C*), while Wales has retained the traditional eight-point grade scale of A* to G. Youngsters who studied BTECs and other level 2 qualification are also getting their results today.
